Interesting: Seven Always On - Beta

Wow! what a difference one year can make.

Last time I used Seven Always On was in the shape of Cingular Xpress Mail (Seven powers Cingular's AT&T's Xpress Mail service) on my Nokia E62.

I was *not* impressed with the service.

Well, the boys and girls over at Seven have been working hard. I was mightily impressed with Seven's beta of their upcoming new version. I recommend giving their new version a try - the beta is open to the public.

To use the service sign up for their beta program and create an account (the beta is free). You can then download the necessary software directly to your device or via your computer.

You accept the usual legal Mumbo Jumbo, enter your mobile phone number (they will ask for your number when you register your account).

Then you pick the email account you want to enable on your device. The software supports multiple accounts. Since I use Mail For Exchange for my corporate email I was mainly interested to try out the Yahoo! and Gmail integration.

More legal Mumbo Jumbo, this time from Yahoo! but after that the set up is easy-peasy.

You only need to enter your Yahoo! (Gmail) ID and your password, the software takes care of the rest of the server settings - they way it should be.

I was pleasantly surprised to see how quick this process was. Within seconds I was signed in and my email started to show up!

Another nice feature during the set up procedure is that you can see how much of your email (in percentage) has been downloaded to the device.

The software supports push email of Yahoo! and Gmail. Most of the time this works great but since it is a beta product there are times when the Seven server seems to be disconnected and nothing comes through, or at least it is not pushing the email in real time.

Having said that I think there is great potential for the service! It is easy to set up and use. I also like the integration with my Yahoo! email account. Email read on my device will automatically be marked as "read" when I log on to Yahoo! from my PC.

I wish a push email service like this would be available without having to buy it from the Operators.

Seven will eventually turn off the beta and since their business model is to sell the email service to the carrier, it will become unavailable for customer who are not with Seven's Operator customers…

One thing that irked me about Seven’s mail solution was their lack of willingness to work with self-signed SSL certs for IMAP. Kind of like the fits that Intellisync has historically thrown over such things…

Have they decided to allow that yet? Even a warning with an option to accept forever would suffice for me…

  2. Jeb Says:

My issue with Seven is that I can’t mark multiple emails as read at once. I may get my email on my computer and don’t want to look at it again on my phone so I have to go thorough and highlight and mark them as read, but I can’t seem to mark more then 1 as read at a time.

Seven beta testing new version of push e-mail solution…

Eseries reports that Seven is beta testing a new version. They didn’t like Seven’s offering (in the guise of Cingular Xpress Mail) so much previously, but the new one includes push from more services including Gmail, Yahoo and AOL (althoug…

Are you still trying this on E62 or in the E61i?
At least for me using the workgroup connector to work with a Domino server, the client is extremelly sluggish and consumes an awful lot of ram!

  5. Hm... Says:

Am i the only one here who is a bit scared entering my E-Mail Account Data (incl. Password) into some ’service’?

  6. alexa Says:

sorry but, what is this app for? cant i access my mails with mail4exchange nokia E61i default account?

  7. Pete Says:

does anyone know how to change the ’sender’ or ‘reply to’ when using this app for email?

  8. Steves71 Says:

Its nice to be able have multiple accounts pushed and set it to only check between certain hours which couldnt be done the last time I tried 7mail. But still no option to receive via one account and reply via a different one, and still tiny fonts compared to the default email application. Does this consume loads of ram for anyone else? Mine drops from 21meg to 15meg free ram when this is running. Ill stick with MailX for now unless they make some more changes in the next beta version.

Excellent push service imho. One big advantage over the S60 default email client is that you can see what an attachment is before downloading, and a huge advantage over Blackberry Connect and apps such as the Gmail web application is you can actually upload and download huge attachments.

In my experience there was a niggling problem with Seven ‘Always On’ not always being on :P Kept disconnecting randomly without any notification. Anyone else have this problem?

  10. Pete Says:

i tried using this today and gave up because it kept using up all my ram so the phone would end up in a kind-a frozen state. its a real shame because its the only thing that i have come across that actually sync’s with Gmail (i have to admit it is a real pain not being able to change the sender address), it looks like im going to have to stick with Mail4exchange which does have some pro’s to it and mail2web (which i dont really like but…) God bless them for providing free PUSH mail.

… does anyone know of any other service that i could use to sync my Gmail with push capabilities that isnt to expensive? because i need to be able to access my inbox & sent mail both on my iBook and e61.

Hi, Ed. Congrats! You are house owner! :)
I have try this Seven app but didn’t find it useful, it has tons of bugs, after setup 3 mail accounts, I was able to get mail only from gmail, the idea of easy setup is cool but the way they have done this, not really impressive and finally after a crash I’ve erased app from my E61. I use ProfiMail and check mail every 15 minutes, so I don’t really need push.

Hi, I’m newbie in S60, got a E65 since a few days, after years of Palm , so i’m a bit confused and your blog is helpfull, thanks !

I choose the e65 mainly for wifi, but there is something I do not understand, how do i set up pop before smtp allowing me to send email from any hotspot over the world regardless the smtp server dedicated to the internet provider ?
or should I swith to gmail or other 3rd party app like this seven.com ?

  17. Jeb Says:

Ed I forgot to say congrats on the new house. VERY exciting. Anyways, am I missing something with 7 in that I want to be able to highlite multiple emails and either delete them all or mark them all read. I can’t get 7 to do that.

My second question is is it possible for 7 to use multiple access points or my access point group. I prefer wifi first them data from my carrier to be used.

Any advice or input would be great from anybody. Thanks.

  18. hestheone64 Says:

If you need a free push solution with multiple accounts, try Cortado (www.cortado.com). It really works well and you can mask your mails with your preferred account (like Blackberry).

  19. K.TheKuwaiti Says:

The application has demolished my battery life ..

  20. robert seiden Says:

cortado.com works amazing with Gmail. At cortado .com just register and choose your gmail address for fowarding and zoom

  21. Peter Says:

    Great application works in Africa

  22. skylab Says:

i just have to say that i love this software! it integrates so well with the e61 and in one day i’ve already become addicted to having my Gmail PUSH to my phone. i’ll be in big trouble when the SEVEN beta is over, as I know my provider will NEVER offer me the chance to pay for this great software.

SEVEN: Release a consumer version and my $5 a month will be yours!

  23. Adil Says:

Use it regularly. Excellent software and truly a push e-mail solution. It does integrate well with the E61, as another user said. Able to use both Gmail and Google Apps mail (which I have at work) so very beneficial for me.

  24. Razor1973 Says:

hestheone64, I tried to check out Cortado and was able to create an account, but, apparently, there’s no client to download. You just need to set this account up in your Mail for Exchange application, i.e. it provides exactly the same service as Mail2Web LIVE. This being the case, what do you mean by mask your mails with your preferred account like with a BlackBerry. On a BB, you can reply to an e-mail sent to address 1 from address 2. If you’re using the Mail for Exchange client, you can’t do this.

  25. Razor1973 Says:

Oh, and I am giving SEVEN a try right now. It’s been working for a few minutes and I have 2 AOL accounts set up and pushing at the moment, but it does seem to big my E61i down because of all the resources it uses. Plus, like Steves71 says, the fonts are quite small. Jeb mentions he can’t mark more than one message as read at the same time. True, but I think the bigger problem here is that you can mark messages as Read, but never as Unread. It doesn’t make sense to me. This is my way to mark them for follow-up.

  26. Hemant Says:

Hi..can someone tell me step-by-step configuration of Outlook Webmail Access configuration on SEVEN on NOKIA E50. After installation, software asked for username & password for OWA account but along with SEVEN system ID. From where I should get this SEVEN systems ID to put it?

Kindly guide me. Thanks in advance.

  27. Havana Thresher Says:

    Hi:

I am a Cuban researcher, and of course, I cannot access my Yahoo Mail account, since all Yahoo and Gmail websites have been forbidden (by “law”) all around Cuba. Can anyone tell me how to access my Yahoo account through any other website (which not includes the word Yahoo in its address) at least once? I need it at least once in order to re-direct all incomings messages to another email address.

Thanks in advance to you all….

  28. Ed Says:

    Hi Guys,

    A short mention here…
When the beta will be over you could go and try Emoze.com for push mail.
I personally think that the server is a bit sluggish, but that all depends on your geographical location. (Netherlands) They support Gmail and Yahoo as well.
Besides that, there’s Consilient. They also have a push mail client, but on my Nokia N80 there’s no possibility to have it run in the background. (I know there’s this “hide” button, but it doesn’t do the trick).
Otherwise it runs very smoothly and I like the user interface.
