Alternative Yahoo! Email Access
As several readers have pointed out, the newly released Yahoo! Go 2.0 for Nokia Eseries is somewhat sluggish and a bit bloated from a memory consumption point of view.
So what are the alternatives if your favourite colour is Purple and can't live without access to your Yahoo! email from your Nokia Eseries device?
Well, it depends.
If you live in a region where Yahoo! allows POP3 access you can use the same settings for the native client on your Nokia Eseries device. However, in the US and some other regions POP3 access is not standard and part of a "premium" package.
You might still be in luck if your carrier has an agreement with Yahoo! and possibly also provided you with access to Yahoo! email through Seven Always On or some other third party application.
However, if you can't access Yahoo! through POP3 or through your operator you might want to try out the following IMAP settings to access Yahoo! email on your Eseries device.
Go to the Mail application > Options > Settings > E-mail > Options > New mailbox and select IMAP4
Try using the following settings for IMAP:
- IMAP: imap.mail.yahoo.com
- SMTP: smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com
I confirmed that I could receive email with the above setting from a US Yahoo! email account but here is the catch - I could not send email.
I also tried the following settings with the same result, I could receive email but not send email.
- IMAP: imap.next.mail.yahoo.com
- SMTP: smtp.next.mail.yahoo.com
So there you have it - IMAP settings to retrieve Yahoo! email but unfortunately not send email.
I am not sure why sending email is not working. Is the server setting incorrect? Has Yahoo! blocked sending email through a rogue mobile connection?

Works fine for me on my E61i and T-Mobile. In fact I’ve been using it for some time now. I discovered the IMAP settings when I had my T-Mobile Dash. When I set up my Yahoo account on that phone, it automatically defaulted to the IMAP settings for me.
The thing is that it will ONLY work if I connect to the T-Mobile Internet and not WiFi.

I used yahoo.co.uk and GMAIL so that i could check my email from my E61 using POP3 for free..its very useful and cheap, it costs me only 1-2$ per months, checking, sending, receiving email.

Don’t forget to access your Yahoo! mail preferences online and set the option to receive email via POP access, else it’s a mute exercise!

I believe you have to use cwmx.com for Cingular/ATT in the US for the outgoing smtp. I dont thing they allow any other smtp settings. This is if you connect using the GPRS/EDGE cingular network. I tried this and was able to send an email from my yahoo account on my e61 to my gmail account. I hope this helps.

For sending:
Be sure to put in your login information
I used the access point:
smtp.att.yahoo.com
Turn on Security ports
Use port 465

Anyone got this working on E61i on AT&T/Cingular?
When I click on the installer link, it complains that my firmware, 1.0633.22.05 (found by “*#0000#” on phone), is too old and that i need version 2.0633.
But I don’t see that….almost seems as if it thinks i have E61 and not E61i…

Sending e-mails uses a port (25) which is often blocked by carriers as they want you to use their own servers. That could be your problem

I got this working for both send and receive!
I am using a (free) US yahoo.com mailbox but am connecting from T-mobile in the UK. However, I use imap.mail.yahoo.com and smtp.mail.yahoo.com as my mailboxes, not the ones suggested above. And I had to put my username and password into the E61i for both incoming and outgoing mail. Your own results may vary.
Hope you all get this working soon,

I guess, this could be something do with HTTP/Socket type of connections. T-mobile might be supporting Socket type connections. I found this issue with one of the messenger(IM) applications.

Hmm.. I tried to setup my Yahoo! Mail account just like what Andro101010 did.. but when it trys to connect it asks me for my username and password.. I enter it, then attempts to connect again, only to ask me for the username and pass.. this pattern continues over and over until I cancel the action.
meh.. I guess I’ll just have to shell out some bucks to get POP3

I have 2 problems with Seven Always On. 1. I can’t mark multiple mail as read at once, I have to do each one separately. And 2. It won’t let me use one of my Access Point Groups to connect it’s only 1 access point and no alternates.
Anybody have any solutions to these issues?

I have T-mobile web plan ($5.99/month) and i was able to send and receive email on my Nokia N95 using the following servers and default settings.
* IMAP: imap.mail.yahoo.com
* SMTP: smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com
T-mobile does not block port 25 on their plan and hence i was able to send email fine. If i use my home WiFi then the sending does not work because my ISP blocked the port 25. I can send detailed settings for T-Mo users.
August 3rd, 2007 at 4:36 pm
Great find!
I got sending to work with these settings:
Outgoing mail server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Security: SSL/TLS
Port: 465
(465 is supposed to be the default port, but for some reason my E61 did not send a message successfully until I set 465 manually).
I use T-mobile in the US and I am a US subscriber to Yahoo! Mail. I have also been paying Yahoo! for POP3 access for several years and I suspect the smtp server above will not work for users who aren’t paying for the service.
Now if only I could find an IMAP client for the E61 that will download the full message body like my blackberry did so that I can read my mail when I’m in the subway and have no signal….
August 5th, 2007 at 8:52 pm
I guess the above setting only works for those users on the T-Mobile network cos it sure doesnt work on mine( AT&T/cingular)
August 6th, 2007 at 5:13 pm
I downloaded and tried it this weekend. The free “push” mail feature was the one thing I really wanted but alas, it works sometimes….and not others….plus I wish there was a way they can utilitize sometthing to remind me there’s new email. Right now my phone beeps if there’s a new email but there’s no note or blinking light or anything. If I wasn’t close by the phone, I wouldn’t know there was a new email pushed through Yahoo Go and unless I checked it. (note: this is going through Yahoo Go and not setting up any POP server, etc)

Dinesh-
Do you have a special character in your Yahoo password like a slash (/)? I had a similar problem as you once with connecting my Yahoo account to my TiVo. I contacted Yahoo support and they told me to use only letters and numbers in my password. Since then everything has been fine.
August 8th, 2007 at 6:34 am
hey Scott,
I don’t have any special characters in my password or username, it’s just numbers and letters. By the way, is your Yahoo! Account a free one?
thanks for the response!
August 13th, 2007 at 11:16 am
Same here problem here Dinesh. It asks my password over and over…
August 14th, 2007 at 12:05 pm
Dinesh: this only occurs, if you want to connect via WIFI (same on my device). Try another connection and it will work.
I tried all above settings, but none worked for sending an eMail. I use T-Mobile in Germany with a yahoo.com account, but am not able to send. Also WIFI doesn’t work as connection type, so I’ve to use GSM/UMTS to get eMails. I also found out that mailboxes (mobile / PC) aren’t in sync and spam is going through and appears on my E61i.

Sweeeet…the settings worked with my N95 on T-Mobile US! Sending and Receiving.
Bye Bye Yahoo Go! 2.0
August 18th, 2007 at 1:19 am
in my E50, I use wizzard setting, and then select Email. The incoming server & outgoing server setting ’s configured automatics. But then I change the incoming server with : imap.next.mail.yahoo.com. For outgoing, my GSM operator (Telkomsel Indonesia) , give me free service with server : mail.telkomsel.com. Try with your own operator, may be it work too.
August 18th, 2007 at 1:22 am
But still, I want to try Yahoo Go for E50. I need it for instant message (IM).
Btw, any body successed use native IM included in E50? I tried :
imps.next.msg.yahoo.com, imps.next.msg.yahoo/gateway, imps.next.msg.yahoo.com:80/gateway. None is success for login.

GSM-GURU, I am using a N91, what setting did you use for your N95?
September 30th, 2007 at 2:38 pm
offtopic: anybody know what theme is that and where to get it?
November 2nd, 2007 at 10:55 pm
I changed my operator with indosat im3, outgoing message, use :smtp.m3-access.com. working, fine to send message.
From 2 nov 07, imap.next.mail.yahoo.com cannot be used. I tried to check at next.yahoo.com, and it’s under construction.
November 2nd, 2007 at 10:57 pm
I hope they will add server for IM at next.yahoo.com
November 20th, 2007 at 2:32 am
I use imps.msg.yahoo.com, today, and it work. but the connection is unstable, and ’server error’ msg error ’s occured frequently
November 25th, 2007 at 2:08 am
I have ATT/Cingular and a N75 using the following settings works like a champ!
Mail Type: IMAP
Incoming: imap.next.mail.yahoo.com
Outgoing: cwmx.com
I hate the ATT/Cingular java mail app, and now I can use the internal mail app only for all my accounts.

Port default
Works on Vodafone, Nok E50, Romania

guys…
here is the solution for all your problem.
TURN OFF “Send copy to self” and “Reply-to”
in Email Settings > User Settings
fields and everything will work, with or without SSL/TLS.
January 30th, 2008 at 7:31 am
I have ATT/Cingular. As of this morning, imap.next.mail.yahoo.com, would not allow me to login and receive my mail. It worked flawlessly for a while, but today it doesn’t. I wonder if they changed their authentication. Any thoughts? Workarounds? Other settings?

Great thread!
Reading this thread, I remembered the old days of ISP blocking SMTP to prevent mail-spoofing.
I’ve got a Sony Ericsson K850i on the Telstra NextG (3G) network in Australia, which had Telstra BigPond email pre-configured.
I copied the outgoing mail configuration to the Yahoo Mail account, and bingo. it works!
SMTP server: mail.bigpond.com
Port 25:
Authentication:
User: not required?
Pass:

YO IF THIS IMAP OR POP DONT WORK CONECT USING YAHOO GO! ITS A FREE APPLICATION THAT CAN BE USED WITH ALL PHONES, AND IT WORKS GREAT, NOT ONLY MAIL, BUT WEATHER, STOCKS ETC….
July 15th, 2008 at 3:48 am
it doesn’t work with me.:| i keep getting booted back to the username/password/connection type screen then eventually i get a connection refused popup. this is on a wifi connection, and using a GPRS connection will bloat my phone bill like nothing.
i want yahoo on my native mail client! darn.
August 8th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
i am also having problems with yahoo mail on my E61. This is recent and has been going on for the past month or so. I am in the US and have AT&T as my carrier. Current settings are as follows:
Incoming:
pop.mail.yahoo.com
Access Point: Express/MediaNet - neither works at this point
security ports - off
port - default/110 both no longer work
Outgoing:
smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Access Point: Express/MediaNet - neither works at this point
security ports - off
port - default/25 both no longer work
I get asked for username and password and then i get a general error or timeout message
