Mail For Exchange 2.0
Bring out the cake and celebrate, Mail For Exchange hits the big TWO DOT OH!
This is by no means a minor update. This is a big step forward for an already solid application.
Nokia released a new version of its implementation of Microsoft's Exchange Activesync technology - Mail For Exchange 2.0
The new version of Mail For Exchange introduces many new features. Some of these new features are:
- Support for accept/decline of received meeting requests.
- Global Address List (GAL) lookup
- Task synchronization -server tasks are listed in the calendar.
- In device search - the search application on ESeries devices will search for content in Mail forExchange emails synchronized to the device.
- Additional support for Nokia Nseries devices -MFE is compatible with Nokia N73, N76 and N95
- The application is now installed in a separate folder called - MfE
- and more…
Upgrading from any previous version to Mail for Exchange 2.0 requires that you perform a Full Resync. This is required to utilize the new Task synchronization feature.
Start the Mail for Exchange application and select Options > Full resync.
When opening a meeting request you will be informed if there is a scheduling conflict. You can choose to accept, decline or tentatively accept the meeting. The meeting will be added to the calendar if MFE is set to synchronize the calendar.
Global address book lookup can be performed through selecting Options > Company Directory in email compose mode.
There is also a Company Directory application "Comp. Dir" in the MFE folder which you can use to search for address information of other Exchange users.
Download Mail For Exchange 2.0 here.

I just installed the update and it works great! Now I’m wishing that Nokia adds Notes synchronization in the next release

Immediately updated to new version. The ability to get data from the company directory is awesome. Good work Nokia and thanks to e-series.org for keeping me informed!!!

I also just installed it - and get an error message about an untrusted certificate. We have a self signed cert. here. Any ideas how to resolve that?
August 17th, 2007 at 11:52 am
I installed the new version and it is working great. A+
August 17th, 2007 at 12:01 pm
marin, Check the FAQ/TSG available from the same page. It has lots of information about certificate issues.
Is this error new for this version of MfE?

This new version sometimes stops syncing and says my password is wrong, and the contact search application crashes and does nothing… wow…
August 17th, 2007 at 1:16 pm
Do you really need to uninstall the previous version or can you just install it over the previous one ?
August 17th, 2007 at 1:56 pm
How about subfolders?
August 17th, 2007 at 2:22 pm
@risK: I think I had that error once right after I bought the device and had it set up. To be honest, I don’t remember how I got the certificate working, but it was none of the described methods in the faq and tsg. However, right now I messed around a bit and got it working again, so let’s see how it will improve my mobile life
August 17th, 2007 at 3:00 pm
Yeah, how is subfolders hadled if at all yet?
August 17th, 2007 at 3:45 pm
Yeah, does it support sub-folders?
August 17th, 2007 at 3:53 pm
Looking at the release notes and FAQ, it appears that this version still doesn’t support sub-folders.
And, it still doesn’t support Access Point Groups! Nokia, wtf is going on?
August 17th, 2007 at 5:30 pm
I think the feature set is amazing. Totally sufficient. It is a free application after all. If you desperately need sub-folders support there is another EAS based solution from Dataviz called RoadSync.
MFE 2.0 - thank you!
August 17th, 2007 at 6:29 pm
tell me it supports access point groups. this fix is long overdue.
August 17th, 2007 at 6:35 pm
I have kind of a strange issue. M4E 2.0 seems to be doing everything it should except…I have it set to send e-mail immediately but it will only send on the next sync. I set it to send on the next sync and that is what it does, I change it back to sync immediately and it still will only send on next sync. Anybody else seeing this?
August 17th, 2007 at 7:06 pm
I just switched it over to a WLAN connection and it will send immediately. Switched back to GPRS and it will only send on next sync. AT&T Issue? Setting issue? How could that be?
August 17th, 2007 at 10:19 pm
This ignorance about folders is really pissing me off! Why is it so hard to implement this? Will we have to hope another year and wait for v3.0? I really don’t understand why it would be so hard to implement this vital feature…

I have a lot of disconnection/reconnection, changed the heartbeat to 3 but still the same.
With the previous version (1.6) I had no problems at all.
I am using Mail2web exchange server.
Anyone with the same ?
Thanks
August 18th, 2007 at 3:29 am
Just to inform you all that, once removed the Blackberry Connect software I had on my phone, the Company Search works.
August 18th, 2007 at 3:31 am
I want to but not allowed to use this at my job on my N95 as remote wipe/lock to my knowledge still isn’t supported on N-series phones…
Still I’m happy to see the progress. Maybe some day…
August 18th, 2007 at 4:36 am
Ice, I am using mail2web with M4E 2.0 and E61i. So far no problem with disconnection as you described. I have the heartbeat set at 15.
Has anyone had a chance to compare M4E vs. BBC 4? Both do synchronization. I found that M4E uses LOTS of data traffic. BBC 4 uses very little. In just 1 hour M4E clocked over 100kb, while BBC 4 only used hardly 15kb for over 1 day.
Seems that data usage is no better with the new M4E 2.0.
August 18th, 2007 at 5:03 am
Hi,
Installed M4E v2.0 over v1.3 on my N80. Although all the synchronisation seems to work, I am unable to change the settings, because M4E complains with ‘Incompatible device’ and won’t let me change any sync settings. Company Directory lookup and all the mail/calalendar things work fine though. Guess I am sticking with v2.0 for now, accepting that I won’t be able to change any settings until I install v1.3 back..
August 18th, 2007 at 6:35 am
Thanks Bublio
In fact my problem was that the Secure Connection was set to NO (when it should be on YES)…
August 18th, 2007 at 6:41 am
Great M4E! I am using it with Mail2web exchange server and, apparently, everything is working ok after the upgrade and full resync. Thanks for advice!
August 18th, 2007 at 6:48 am
I’m still screwing around trying to get an e-mail to send right away. Here is what I have discovered. When set to send on next sync M4E does not try to connect, it waits until the next sync to send the message. That is how it should work. When set to send immediately, it establishes a GPRS connection, I get the lighting bolt (for a second at most) and then it disconnects with the message still in the outbox. When I use a WLAN connection it works just fine. Everything else seems to work fine, the tasks sync, the global address feature is way cool. The fact that it won’t send new e-mail immediately is kind of a minor issue but it would be great to get it working as designed. I have unistalled 2.0, re-installed 2.0, installed 2.0 over 2.0, deleted my profile and re-created my profile, all with no difference. Any ideas from the smart people on this great site?
August 18th, 2007 at 7:30 am
Does anyone uses its own exchangeserver? I do, and syncing my e61 does work fine, except my tasks. I already tried to remove and install m4e but, no succes with the tasks. During the syncing it will get stuck at the task. I don’t understand…. Does anyone has a suggestion?
August 18th, 2007 at 7:42 am
My E61 refused to instal the updater. ‘Installation cancelled’, it said abruptly. Strangely enough, the phone also refused to accept the older M4E version 1.06. Can anyone tell me what’s the glitch. My handset has the latest software update. ie. 3.06.
August 18th, 2007 at 7:52 am
Hi Sudhir, you should go to instruments -> software management (I’m using a dutch OS, so it could be different) -> options -> install -> sofware installation -> all (instead of, only signed ). This should do the trick…

Hi! Bas:
Software installation on my phone remains permanently set to “all” . So that can’t be the issue. There is something stranger at work.
August 18th, 2007 at 10:41 am
Do you need to delete the old version before downloading the newer version?
August 18th, 2007 at 10:42 am
Hi! again bas!
I managed to install M4E 2.0, but only after removing the previous version from the Application manager, and then installing the new afresh. It worked. Thanks for trying to help anyway.
August 18th, 2007 at 10:56 am
pls ignore my previous email. Was able to upgrade. Thanks!
August 18th, 2007 at 10:59 am
Helen,
You don’t need to delete or un-install the previous version. Just install the new version as is. But you should perform a full resync so that the task sync feature kicks in.
Cheers

M4C is the most useful app for me. I wish the next version can offer individual SYNC-SCHEDULE for each item: Email, Contacts, Task..etc.
As to get the similar effect of Pushmail, user have to set the Sync-Shedule to Every 10 minutes or less. Otherwise, the rest items, Contact, Calendar..etc, do not needs such a frequency of sync, and their no exception of sync will add unnecessary period during synch. It results the probability of missing incoming calls, and wasts more battery power.
August 18th, 2007 at 11:52 am
How can i perform a full resync?
August 18th, 2007 at 12:50 pm
I’m not upgrading till they get subfolders! i user M4E only for Calendar & Contacts and the moment!
August 18th, 2007 at 2:56 pm
Hi all,
This is great. Specially to be able to seardh for contacts on the Exchange server. One thing though, is it at all possible to change the search behaviour to first name-last name It seems to be stuck in Last name - first name.

Hi all,
After upgrade to M4E 2.0.0 from 1.6 I am not able to send nor redirect any mail. So strange!
Anyone experienced the same? Anyone with a packade of M4E 1.6 if I need to downgrade [being able to send is a nice feature that I miss ;-)]

I keep getting “Update Error” when I try to install M$E 2.0 on my Nokia E62. I tried many times installing over ver. 1.03 and 1.06; then I uninstalled M4E and tried to install it fresh, but still got the same error. Has anyone successfully installed the ver 2.0 on a Nokia E62?
Thanx.
August 19th, 2007 at 3:44 am
Doesn’t work on the 6120, even though it’s the functional equivalent of an E65 where it regards the mail application (it’s the same rev, for chrissakes). Nokia would do well to make their application locking s60-version-based and not model-based.
August 19th, 2007 at 4:18 am
Hi Thure, you can’t send at all? Not even manually? I have spoken with a tech support guy from Nokia who is assigned to MFE (finding him was kinda like winning the lottery) and he tells me there are “some” e61 and e62s that the send immediately feature is not working on. They don’t know why, yet. I guess in MFE 1.6 there was a problem with mail sometimes hanging in the outbox until the next scheduled sync (if you were not using always on). 2.0 “fixed” that bug. I never had the problem with 1.6 but it seems like I have it after the fix. NICE!
August 19th, 2007 at 6:36 am
Still no flag support, subfolders or marking items unread…
Does Roadsync offer all of these?
August 19th, 2007 at 9:24 am
RoadSync supports all those 3 features. I think it just can’t mark multiple items are read/unread, you have to do it one by one.
August 19th, 2007 at 10:43 am
I had the previous version working excellently in my E50. I downloaded the ver 2.0 and ried to install over the old one but got the message “Upgrade Failed”. I uninstalled the older version and tried again but still got the same message. Now I am left with no Mail for Exchange and am really at my wits end. Can anyone help me on this? If not anything else, can anyone tell me from where I can download the older version? The Nokia For Business site does not have the older version.
August 19th, 2007 at 11:05 am
For those of you having trouble upgrading, have you tried removing the previous version first? I know the instructions say it’s not necessary, but worth a try.

Does anyone know how to reduce the font size? It’s ridiculous to have such a huge font when reading e-mails on E61i’s big screen. The font size in Nokia Intellisync is much better. :-/
August 20th, 2007 at 1:32 am
What a mess, have to do a hard reset to fix everything, even then the company directory didn’t work, sigh…
August 20th, 2007 at 5:25 am
When updating from 1.2.x to 1.6 i had to reset my device, some helper applications (specially one called EasViewer) did not get erased by the uninstaller and I believe it could not be updated by the 1.6 installer.
I had the messages “Feature not supported” appearing and other times the MfE configuration tool simply would not open. The only way that worked was to reset the device.
On the 1.6 -> 2.0 update, simply removing the 1.6 and then installing 2.0 worked

My problem with sending email immediately has been solved. With MFE 1.6 or earlier versions I used the media net access point. (I am on Cingular/AT&T in the US) Everything worked fine so I assumed I would just use that same access point for 2.0. That still works with 2.0 but it will not send email immediately. There is another access point that you get when you order settings from Nokia, it could be called “express” but others have an access point called email. Some of the advanced settings are different than the media net access point. When you use the email access point then email will send immediately and everything else works perfectly as well. If anyone needs to create a new email access point (as I did) let me know and I can send you the exact settings for it.

ust saw the news and decided to update. My E70 successfully failed to update. I said I have to completely remove 1.6. I did that and I failed again to update to 2.0. Tried to go back to 1.6 and it does not work. Does not install…so yay, at work with now sync….

Just one quick questions to MfE users: I’m used to blackberry connect and blackberry connect doesn’t use the popup notification but makes the LED on the E62 blink. Is there a way to make MfE blink the LED without the “new mail” popup? Or I have to use RemindMe for that?
August 20th, 2007 at 11:43 am

aaaagh!………….I upgraded from 1.6 to 2.0 on my E61 and N95. Now neither work. I was forced to delete 1.6 on both devices to allow the upgrade. I had both devices working perfectly under 1.5 but now cannot connect to the Exchange server. I get various error messages stating credentials incorrect etc. I can successfully log into the Exchange server using https from the phone’s web browser and it will accept my user name and password. Any idea where I’m going wrong? Do I need to do some form of reset? Any suggestions welcome.
August 20th, 2007 at 2:32 pm
Why are people getting so excited about MfE? BBC has email and calendar sync, meeting requests and company directory lookup for almost one year now. You really do need these features to compete with the real Blackberries. If you add to this the lower data usage then the BBC is the clear winner.
I find contacts and notes sync less interesting. It would be nice to have but really, you can sync them once a day or once a week and be fine with it. Contrary to what some people believe only a small portion of us use the tasks application on the phone.
May be ME’s real strength is the ability to download full attachments. But again, that is a niche service. It is hard to read on the display (the E70 has the resolution while the E61 has the size but neither has both

After upgrading to M4E 2.0 I have lost all group membership information in my E61 Contacts! Have you seen any warnings about it befor installation?
It might be not so ugly if Nokia would offer additional groupings in (by Company Name or other fields in Contacts database).
Another question is do anyone knows how to create meeting request in M4E?

August 21st, 2007 at 8:23 am
Hi AndyUT, you indeed lose your groups when you install 2.0. When you do a full resync after the install it deletes all contact info on your phone as well as email and calendar info. When it re-installs the info the contacts are back but not the groups. Well to be more precise, the groups are likely still there with no contacts in them. You have to rebuild your groups on the device. Also, we can’t yet create a meeting request with MFE. There is no program available that does that yet, maybe in 2.5 or 3.0. Hope that helps!

I had E62(from Cingular) for about 10 months before giving it up.
I now have a E61
I could NOT sucessfully connect using ‘Mail for Exchange’ on either device.
Certificate problem (resolved)
============
I had exported and imported my Exchange server 2003 sp2 certificate to the device. now this error is resolved
No connection(no error messages either)
=========
I had worked with Nokia support, Cingular support and tried multiple Access Point settings, nothing seem to make a connection to the exchange server. No error logs in the device or on the Exchange server
BUT balckberry works just fine on the first install on either device, but cannot open most of the attachments. at least the e-mail and calander part works
I had switched my Data Plan half a dozen times between Blackberyy connect and PDA unlimited from Cingular to test back and forth. Only blackberry connect works every time.
also now I have a unlocked device Cingular would not fully support me troubleshooting
Please help…:-(
I have no regrets for the device, but in-order to be true business phone it should support features(all) of BB or Microsoft Exchange
Thanks

Problem was come up after that. My phone was locked. I have to put a code(12345) for unlock it. I never setup any lock code. When I see autolock period under security menu. It shown 20 minute and I can not change it to none. It said “Cannot Disable autolock”.
I install this program for long time ago but did not use it and never have any problem. When I setup to use it with my company exchange server this locked problem was come up.
If I remove Mail for Exchange program from my phone this locked problem never happand.
Please help.

I can’t scroll down when I use global address list on my E65. anyone could fix it? Thanks.
August 22nd, 2007 at 12:46 pm
I had troubles accessing the calendar and notes after installing. Using the option button caused an application error in both apps. Seems MfE 2.0 and the Microsoft Live app that was posted on this (excellent) blog some time ago don’t work together.
I almost gave up after my second install of MfE 2.0 not working again, but only removing Microsoft Live fixed things. One happy camper here, especially since I don’t need to log into my outlook webaccess to accept meeting requests anymore.

Anyone found a way to get m4e on a 6120c?
August 24th, 2007 at 8:17 am
Had a few problems with my E61 but was able to workaround I think..
1) full resync only sync’d contacts incrementally. when I first did the full resync, only two contacts remained on the phone (of 800 or so on the server)..this was a bit unnerving. Subsequent resyncs added 30-40 contacts at a time.. I then removed ‘contacts’ from the sync content setting, sync’d, re-enabled it. THen about 550 contacts were synced and then it quit again. Each time I sync about 35 contacts are added, I have most of them back by now. Does anyone know how to see the total number of contacts in OWA?
2) Tasks update cause system error. After full resync, attempting to create a task on the E61 resulted in ’system error’ alert and no task was added. Also, none of the tasks from the server showed up upon sync. My workaround was the same trick, removing the tasks from sync content, and then resyncing. The tasks now sync OK.
Generating a meeting request from the phone would be great, but at least being able to respond is a step in the right direction.

Hi, keatisk.
I encountered the exactly same issue of sending email. It’s really annoying ’cause I don’t know where to locate the problem.
I also tracked your solving approach. Otherwise, I’m in China where the ISP make different price for each AccessPoint. So I have to get rid of Ver.2.0 and go back to Ver.1.6.1. Then, this issue don’t occur anymore~
I would rather consider this issue as bug of Ver.2.0, wish it get fixed soon.
I very appreciate you sharing so many useful info, it’s really helpful !
Best regards.

Hi mebanna, I think it is a bug in 2.0. But it is a bug which can be solved by the user. Let me explain is some detail what I did to overcome the “not sending email immediately” issue. I simply created a new access point.
Here is how: In the tools folder, go to settings, then connection. Under connection go to access points. In access points select option and the New Access Points, select use existing settings. Once you have copied the access point you can change the name of it by selecting the copied access point (01) from the list of access points and editing the new access point.
On the new access point the data bearer stays the same, the access point name assigned by your isp stays the same, the user name stays the same. Under prompt password it should be NO, the password area will be filled in with ****, the authentication should say Secure. ( if it does not say secure this seems to cause 2.0 all kinds of problems like hanging, losing the connection and re-starting the phone. I don’t pretend to know why, it just seems to work that way) Under homepage I have none.
Okay, once those are all filled in select options and go to advance settings - here is where the big change is. Network type remain IPv4, Phone IP address is set to automatic, DNS address is automatic, Proxy serv. address is none and proxy number is 0.
mebanna, remember these are settings for the AT&T network in the US. I have no idea how yours may be different or why they solve the problem but they do solve it. I’m not sure you want to mess around with more access points if your service provider charges you for each access point. That sounds expensive.
Anyway, I hope that helps, perhaps if not you then someone else trying to get MFE 2.0 to send mail immediately. Good Luck!

After a full sync, I still don’t see any option on task. Where can I look for it?
August 25th, 2007 at 12:07 pm
thank you for that, i really like the company directory feature
August 26th, 2007 at 6:56 am
I wished the MFE 2.0 version would work consistenty.
It performs the initial sync correctly and recieves email.
Sending email via WiFi or T-Mobile USA requires you to turn the phone off and back on before Exchange emails will be sent. They sit in the “Queued”.
This same behavior is observed on my:
Nokia E61, E61i, E70, E65 and E70 with version 2.0
If we reload the earlier version 1.x all is perfect and send and recieve works well.
The “Queued” issue for 2.0 is the same if we use a Wifi or non-Wifi access point.
It will be great when Nokia release version 2.x. Thanks - FLG
August 26th, 2007 at 6:58 am
MFE 2.0 works as described above on the Nokia E90. Sending consistenly is a problem. FLG>>>
August 26th, 2007 at 7:20 am
It looks like MFE 2.0 does not send consistently on many Nokia phones.
Using TMobile USA and WiFi - the setup and recieving of emails is fine.
Sending the messages sit in the queue. When you power off the phone and back on they sometime are sent. Same behavior for GPRS and WiFi access points.
This is a problem on my E61,E61i, E70, E65 and E90 handsets.
Version 1.X works perfectly on the above handsets via GPRS or Wifi.
Maybe MFE 2.x will be better? Thanks - FLG>>>

August 27th, 2007 at 1:23 am
Hi ,
I got a lot of problem to upgrade MFE and got the following message : Installation cancelled.
After many tests I uninstall Blackberry connect and MFE 2.0 install correctly on my E61

keatisk, your solution worked for my phone and three of my colleagues’ phones.
i had experienced the same e-mail-sending problems with mfe 2.0 on my e61.
huge thanks for your solution!!!

Mail for Exchange…its it that good?
I have a E61 currently and Im debating between the E61i and the N95.
E61i running the ever popular Blackberry Connect but the N95 has nothing. But now with Mail for Exchange 2.0 available for the N95, Im curious if it will run similar to Blackberry software.
August 28th, 2007 at 9:55 pm
has anyone noticed how much faster their e65 is now? i cannot believe how quickly the thing goes from screen to screen now w/ this recent update
August 29th, 2007 at 1:14 am
Ok, I have the N95, installed version 2.0 of mail for exchange with the same settings as my E70 and I keep getting System Error - Please try again! cant sync at all to my mail…any suggestions

Hi keatsik,
What this is doing is disabling the proxy settings that Cingular uses for the MediaNet access point.
This is probably a good thing since the proxy server can cause problems sometimes with GPRS sessions timing out.
Not always, but I’ve seen issues with GPRS settings when using proxy servers for other things too like surfing the web and MMS settings, and also for other carriers too.
If in doubt, or you’re having problems with anything GPRS related (i.e. surfing, MMS, etc.), just duplicate the access point like you mentioned above and delete the proxy settings if they are being used and try whatever you’re doing again. This time using this new access point with the proxy settings disabled.

Deleteing proxy settings on T-mobile does not help. Anyone have a solution for sending emails immidiately for t-mobile?
August 31st, 2007 at 10:35 am
Param,
Please provide in detail, the exact setting you’re using for your T-Mobile access point.
All info from all access point screens.
Which phone?
Depending on phone go to Menu -> Tools -> Settings -> Connection -> Access Points ->
Mine access point is called T-Mobile Internet.
Don’t forget to Select Options and also provide details on the Advanced Settings also.
Thx

My E65’s firmware version is 1.633.18.01. I am not able to get both MFE 2.0 & Blackberry connect (7.1.5)_3 installed.
It is either MFE2.0 or BB. If I have one (either MFE or BB) installed and try to install the other, I am getting an error message “update error”.
Any thoughts? Has anyone been able to get both working on an e65?
Cheers!
September 5th, 2007 at 11:38 am
I am also getting the “Update Error” when trying to install on my E70. I am running v3 firmware. I have had to go back to using MFE v1.6. I did try both the upgrade and fresh install method.
September 7th, 2007 at 3:48 am
I have installed mfe on my n73, but what do i need to configure on my exchange 2003 server for enabling this program?
Do i need to open aditional ports in my firewall?
cheers!
September 7th, 2007 at 7:43 am
Dez,
Do you have BB installed or are you trying to install ONLY MFE 2.0? If you are trying to install MFE2.0 alone and you are getting the error, try a hard reset after you have backed up your data. Restore the backup once you have managed to install MFE. If BB is already installed and you are getting this error, uninstall BB and install MFE.
I tried the upgrade method and my phone hung on me & I had to switch it off. In the process, MFE upgrade wouldn’t work. I had to backup my data and do a hard reset & tried the fresh installation. It worked.
I tried to Install BB after that and I kept getting update error. So I uninstalled MFE & tried to install BB and it worked.
Since I was just thinking about signing up for BB and all my emails are anyway available through Mail2Web on MFE, I figured it makes sense to have MFE2.0 installed and I uninstalled BB.
I am not sure if they are restricting the use of only one push email? I read in a Nokia forum that we can have ONLY one of them installed. But I distinctly remember having both BB and MFE installed for some time until my phone was too slow and I decided to uninstall BB.
Not sure if this is a MFE2.0 specific incident or if I am doing anything wrong. I am wondering if anyone out there is also dfacing the same problem?
Cheers!

Since I installed mfe 2.0 I have had the “Feature not supported” error message every time I try to write a new or reply to a new message and whenever I try to open the Company Directory. After reseting my phone 3 times I just realized that I have an E70 (RM-24) that is the US version with firmware 1.0610.05.07 and that seems to be problem. Anyboy has any ideas when a new firmware is going to be released or when is there going to be a 2.0 compatible with RM-24.
September 10th, 2007 at 2:59 pm
I installed MFE 2.0 and tried it out on my Nokia E65. I really didn’t like the autolock feature, where it locked my phone after 15 minutes of inactivity. Now that I’ve uninstalled MFE 2.0, i still CANNOT disable the autolock feature. Does anyone have a solution? Please help!
September 11th, 2007 at 11:04 am
gomezju, the current firmware for RM-24 is 2.0618.07.10 and has been available for a year. I’m hoping to see version 3 of the RM-24 firmware soon but it hasn’t shown up yet. I had problems initially with connect errors but once I made a change to and saved the profile things have been working fine for me. I just made a small change to the off-peak sync schedule and saved the profile and things seem to be good so far.

After a few weeks of using MFE 2.0 I think we now have an answer to a question I used to see pretty often on this blog. It was always some variation of this: Come one Nokia, how hard can it be to make MFE accept and decline appointments?
It seem that the answer to that questions is “real hard!”
I think that MFE is still not quite ready for prime time. Too many bugs and different issues depending on which e-series or n-series device you are using. I am able to send mail immediately after making some changes to my connection settings. I love the company directory, I use it more often then I thought I would. BUT, the thing I most wanted was the ability to accept and decline meetings. I can do it but it sure seems to mess up the phone. When I accept a meeting the response sits in the outbox until the next time the phone syncs. Once the meeting is accepted the calendar starts updating, and updating and updating. I shut the phone off when it was accepting the 12,000 calendar entry. (I have no where near that many items on my calendar) Nothing extra shows up on my calendar but it is a little scary. When I turn the phone back on it syncs and updates the calendar, and updates and updates. I turn the phone off and back on and everything seems okay again. It works the same to decline a meeting. The strangest thing is I have 4 co-workers with an e61, the same as mine with the same firmware, 3.0—-, one has the same issue, the others don’t. They have bugs we don’t have. This is so close to being a great application, I sure hope that MFE 2.something can solve these bugs. Until then I will refrain from accepting or declining meetings unless I am a long way from my laptop.
September 12th, 2007 at 1:38 pm
Has anyone found a way to stop the phone vibrating on a sync? I know I can turn off vibrate in the profile, but that turns it off for ringing as well.
Email Alert tone has been turned off in the profile settings but it still vibrates. This also causes a problem in the car as the carkit detects the vibrate as something happening on the phone so shuts off the radio for about 5 secs.
I have taken to setting the off peak sync to 12 hours so it doesn’t go BRRR overnight!
I am using an e50 and found the accept decline meeting requests (which works fine for me!) the main reason for not dropping back to the previous version.

Hi,
I have been trying to update MFE from 1.6 to 2.0 but have not successful.
I tried upgrading as mentioned the docs, but the “update error”

Still no Access Point Groups… how hard is it to add it? It works quite well with IMAP servers. I found a version of that Birdstep software which 90% works for making an access point group, but it doesn’t always switch properly back to WLAN.
Also less important to me but nice to have would be sub folder support.

I am getting “Update Error!” while upgrading from MFE 1.6 to MEF 2.0. I have MFE 1.6 running fine. anybody has solution for this. I tried uninstallin 1.6 and then installing 2.0. but faced same error. I am using nokia E62.
October 2nd, 2007 at 1:17 am
I don’t have problems with MFE v2.0 on my E61. But in E61i, facing few problems like unable to start sync-ing (once it establishes connection to server, everything is fine). And occassional hanging of phone when there is “New Email Popup”.
October 2nd, 2007 at 4:12 am
Alright, there is another bug. When I save profile, saving takes forever and the only way to close this is to restart the phone. After restart, MEF connects fine.

Stupid question; I installed MFE 2.0 to my E65 today - what is the password it is asking now after 1st install as the device has autolock?

I was unable to send immediately with my E61 + MfE 2.0
but I’ve tried several ways and now it works..
Here’s what I did:
1. On packet data setting, set access point name with the one you used
2. I have set the proxy on my access point -> now I remove it
3. Leave only 1 access point at the same time
Try from step 1 to 3, you don’t need to continue to the next step if your MfE can send the mail immediately.

I suppose the issue with Access Point Groups might well be because changing the connection automatically would break the connection (obviously) and potentially result in greater GPRS data usage when a full connection has to be re-established.
October 9th, 2007 at 4:03 pm
I have emailed MFE 1.6 to all who requested it.
October 11th, 2007 at 6:55 pm
Okay, I’m not sure if this is a MFE issue or not. It is the strangest e61 problem I have ever seen. My company switched over to exchange 2007 yesterday. We were on 2003. I like being able to have “always on” but soon after they switched over I noticed my clock was 6 hours earlier than it should have been. If it was 7:00pm my clock said 1:00pm. I had the auto update feature on. I manually set the clock to the correct time. A while later I turned the auto update back on, the time stayed on the right time and I thought it was just a fluke. But within a minute the time was off by 6 hours again. Has anyone seen this issue? I can just keep the time set manually but I travel a lot and would like to be able to use the auto update feature.
Help???
October 12th, 2007 at 7:04 am
Here is an update to my clock problem. It is even more strange. When MFE is in the always on mode and the time auto update feature is on, the time is correct. When I set MFE to sync every 15 min, or every hour or even set it to manual, the time changes to 6 hours earlier. This seems impossible to me, I wouldn’t believe it if I didn’t see it myself.
This just started happening two days ago, my company updated our exchange server but I don’t see how that would make a difference. Before the update I was not able to have MFE always on and my clock and even with the time auto update on my clock was always right. How can this be?
October 15th, 2007 at 2:48 am
Just try to install MFE v2 on my E61, firmware v1.06xxx
what I found, MFE directory = “feature not supported”, I can receive email, but to reply or create a new one, always say “feature not supported”.
try to do full hard reset, install it again, and still not working.
then I remove it, and install MFE v1.60 and everythink working fine as before..
I don’t know if this because my firmware version is too old.
any body know if there any relation of MFE v2.0 with firmware version ?

I have recently move from an HP Microsift based phone. Whilst I am very won over by the new e61i, there is one area I could do with a bit of help. I installed MfE 2.0 (great - it just worked). Howerver on my last device I used to be able top view “by company”. Currently i can only see options for first and last name. I have found the groups area, is there a way to get groups to import by “company” or can you actually view contacts “by Company”?
October 16th, 2007 at 12:40 pm
Here comes a semi-rant on what is driving me nuts with Mail for Exchange (and Mail in general).
I just got an e61i. I had a Blackberry 8700 and a Treo 650. My wife has an iPhone.
First, some good things.
- MfE syncs quickly, sometimes even before my laptop.
- MfE was easy to install and set up.
- Battery life is great, on par with the Blackberry.
- Very easy to switch between email accounts using the D-pad.
Now the bad/ugly:
- Let’s go through the steps it takes me to send a new email:
– Why is ‘text message’ the top option and “E-mail” the bottom option when I’m *already* in MfE and making a new message?
– Why do you ask me which account to use when I choose E-mail, especially how quickly I can switch between them? 99.9% of the time I want to write an email in the account that I’m in.
– Why do you make me jump to *another* dialog box for Corporate Lookup? Why not just give me an option to look up the name I typed in the to or cc line and come back with a list? The lookup itself is also incredibly slow. It probably takes me 30 seconds to get the name in the field. On the blackberry I’ve already typed and sent the message.
- I can’t click on a phone number or link in the email. WTF? The Treo’s been able to do this since they were Handspring. Someone sends me a number in an email and I’m supposed to copy/paste? This is not fun for dialing into conference calls.
- No auto-replace, e.g. youre -> you’re. Try typing “I’d”, I dare you. Annoying as hell. Why is the apostrophe buried under the slash key?
- No ability to turn off notification buzz when in silent mode. This is really annoying.
- Why don’t you give me the option of downloading the whole message? Sure would be nice to be able to read the whole message on my flight, not just the first 2K.
- You can’t sync notes? Come on.
- Don’t get me started on the initial sync wiping all contacts and calendar entries. Here’s a radical notion — make a group called “Exchange” in both my contacts and my calendar. Delete that one all you want, but leave my personal entries *alone*. I know that this is probably a Microsoft ActiveSync issue, but deleting data to avoid dupes is a cop out. You give me separate email accounts, give me separate calendar and contact accounts.
- Existing, repeating calendar entries aren’t getting picked up.
- Corporate Lookup doesn’t give me a phone number, and isn’t available in Contacts. How am I supposed to get phone numbers from the directory?
- Far too often, MfE just stops checking mail. No error. Whether this is a network issue or a MfE issue I don’t know, but I just don’t trust it.
Phone issues
- Why is the zero off to the right? That’s just weird. Put it where the @ is (and share it with the apostrophe key).
- It’s way too hard to see the numbers at night (or any blue key, for that matter).
Then there’s the whole network switching issue. Take a lesson from the iPhone — if my WiFi networks aren’t available, use GPRS. Or if I’m not getting mail on WiFi, go to GPRS. Don’t make me chose every time. In general, Symbian needs to make the network switching more elegant. The iPhone’s *killing* you here. I should NOT have to worry about it. SmartConnect helps, but this should be built into the OS. I have to pay more money to reliably connect to different networks on a mobile device? Not cool.
The whole issue of where settings live (not just networking, but everything) is a whole other issue. Way too many places, not very elegant.
The e61i has potential. MfE has potential. But it’s not ready for prime time. Sorry if this comes across as snarky, but this has been an incredibly frustrating experience given the potential of the phone (battery, camera, wifi, VOIP). But if you’re coming from the Blackberry, you’ll be disappointed by the email (though you’ll like the browser).
October 19th, 2007 at 6:24 am
Is there a way to list the future calendar events in the active standby screen , instead of saying ‘there is no calendar entries for today’? So for example I have nothing in the calendar for today and tomorrow, but I would like to see what’s the first next calendar entry? Thanks

can I sync my e61i with MFE 2.0 and Nokia PC Suite or any other sync software

November 1st, 2007 at 11:41 am
I installed MFE 2.0 on my N73 (and just upgraded the phone software/firmware to the latest version). I use Cingular/ATT.
I was able to connect to the Exchange 2007 server via the web browser (to test out the access point, which I configured without a proxy). I am able to enter the user/password and connect. However, when I go to sync, it says “Connecting…”, then “Connected…” for about 2 seconds. Then it simply says “Connection Error! Try again later.”
Reviewing the admin log, it says “Missing Protocol Version Header, Reverting to EAS 2.0″. The next entry says “HTTP Server Error 404: Not Found”.
This is crazy, since the same bloody server was found when connecting through the web browser. The credentials are correct as well. Any ideas why it would connect and then immediately bomb out?
Thanks in advance. Greg
November 4th, 2007 at 5:25 am
Greg H - I don’t know why that happens but I have seen it on two other e series phones. A complete uninstall and reinstall of MFE 2.0 should solve the problem.

Hey everyone, am using an E65 with ATT, and recently tried installing MFE 2.1 (today actually so it’s the latest version). Everything works great — except I can’t send mail. Emails that I try to send are queued up, and I haven’t been able to do anything to actually clear my outbox. I tried the access point trick, tried powering off and on, messed with settings…and nothing.
Any ideas????
Thanks, Scott
(Also have the new 3G version of N95 — am assuming there are going to be similar problems…haven’t charged it yet)

Regarding the requests for Notes sync. There’s no way M4E can offer this. Microsoft Exchange doesn’t support syncing of Notes over the air from the server to any client, period. The only way of syncing Notes is directly to Outlook on your PC via PC Suite. If that’s not possible, and you need that info to be kept up to date while away from your PC, one common workaround is to convert Notes
