New Firmware For Nokia E65
As Tom and several other readers pointed out, there is a new firmware available for Nokia E65. Download the Nokia Software Update application, connect yor Nokia E65 and upgrade your device to firmware 2.0633.65.01.
There is still no information about the software update on the news section so I am not sure what is included in the upgrade. If anyone has a change log please post it in the comment section.

curiously, not showing up for me…
(My E65 is the same model as on the screen copy)

I think e61 user´s don´t need, this new firmware, because phone works fine
October 29th, 2007 at 7:02 am
This is wonderful news. Thanks.
Any idea how this update thing works? I heard once that I will need re-install the apps I installed? What about my data?
October 29th, 2007 at 7:04 am
The Nokia website as well as the firmware downloaders (English and German) told me that there were no firmware updates for my E65, (Hey, I even booted Windows for that one!)
My firmware version seems to be the same as your original one.
Any clues?
Or … ahm - is that meant to be a joke I didn’t get?
October 29th, 2007 at 7:37 am
Hope they release a new firmware for E61…
October 29th, 2007 at 7:41 am
Yeah, it’s pretty slow to respond to menu item selection, addressbook display, etc.
October 29th, 2007 at 7:58 am
No love for my E65..
It’s a retail model, procured from one of the Flagship stores. I got the latest NSU sent down to me (1.4.14en-us), but alas, no love. Still stuck at 1.0633.18.01.
October 29th, 2007 at 8:16 am
has anyone gotten this to work over bluetooth?
October 29th, 2007 at 9:15 am
Hi,
I downloaded the phone up-dater but when I try to up-date the firmware the response I got back was that my phone firmware is current 1.0633.18.01.
Any clues?
October 29th, 2007 at 9:57 am
Ya era hora que lo publiquen.
Alguien sabe que incluye esta actualización, o donde puedo consultarlo?. Como ya lo dijeron Nokia no la publica todavia.
October 29th, 2007 at 9:57 am
I installed it couple of days ago and looks like the frequent crashing problem is resolved. The web browser is little faster and there is a new application called Activation Keys and am not sure how its helpful.
I have not noticed any other changes or tweaks.
October 29th, 2007 at 10:23 am
I don’t see the update as well. My phone is the exact same model as in the screenshot.
Any idea why is that?
October 29th, 2007 at 10:31 am
My E65 is the same model as on the screen copy and the update worked for me.
October 29th, 2007 at 11:04 am
working fine!
October 29th, 2007 at 11:10 am
I have connected to updater, but it does not show the new firmware - only says that the old firmware is the most up to date - any advice on how to get it - thanks!
October 29th, 2007 at 12:56 pm
The Model Number is not the whole story, the V2 update has only been released for some Product Codes.
It will take time for all product codes to be available, operators need to approve etc.
October 29th, 2007 at 1:39 pm
Check NSU page with product code 0536850. It will return 2.0633.65.01.
Bogdan
October 29th, 2007 at 7:56 pm
Umm the update will not work for me. I have the red version, that should not make any difference as to whether the update works or not…
October 29th, 2007 at 8:20 pm
Bogdan, even though it returns the new version the software updater still does not update the phones firmware.
October 30th, 2007 at 12:54 am
Trevor: maybe is wrong product code on your phone, or maybe NSU is buggy (it’s not the first time). You can change phone’s product code to the one issue (if yours is different) and try again.

I updated mine last evening & here are some comments:
1) The upgrade process was smooth. Once I downloaded the Nokia Software Updater, it had to download the version of firmware separately which was about 60.4 MB.
2) Overall (atleast the limited time that I have had), the OS seems to be far more stable. Although, I must admit I didn’t faced too many crashes even with the old firmware, this version seems stable.
3) A new application “Active Keys” is installed & I have no idea how or what this does!
4) I was facing (after upgrade) some connectivity issues GPRS wouldn’t connect (not sure if my service provider had his server down), but I initially faced some issues.
5) I was hoping they would fix Wi-Fi bug. My Wi-Fi was not working too great even with the old firmware. It never used to detect “full signal” even though my laptop right next to the phone would connect at tremendous speed. This seems to be where it was with the old firmware.
6) Another W-Fi thing: When I use the web browser, it asks me for the connection to use & it wouldn’t detect my Wi-Fi. But, If it go to Menu –> Connections –> WLAN Wizard, this will detect my Wi-Fi and I can choose options and browse from there. Strange?
7) After I upgraded to MFE 2.0, I was facing difficulty getting both MFE 2.0 & BB Connect installed. Even after the firmware upgrade, I cannot install both. It is either MFE 2.0 or BB Connect. Forget using both together (whcih could be a challenge), I cannot even install them on my phone!
9) I had the left selection key configured to open the “Camera” (Menu ->> Tools –> Settings –> Standby Mode). But for some reason, Nokia has decided to rename this as “Video Mode” & you press the button, it takes you to the Camera & Not the Video option of the camera!
10) I didn’t have major problems with the VOIP side of things except occassional crashes during registering. I need to test this out.
Thats my 2 cents worth. Hopefully I will have some time to scribble out here as and when I find something amiss (or otherwise)
Cheers!

My NSU is telling me that my software is up to date as well (even though I’m running on version 1.0633.18.02). I’m in Ireland… so it might be a regional issue and it just takes a couple of days until it’s available over here.
October 31st, 2007 at 10:35 am
After the upgrade, the active standby inbox and the active standby calendar seem to have switched places. Earlier the inbox used to be on top and the calendar entry used to appear below it. Now the places have been reversed.
I am not completely sure about this, I think it was that way earlier….
It is exasperating how one can fail to recollect something that one stares at all day long (I am one of those people who work out of their phone calendar, and yet…)
Someone has mentioned activation keys above….they appear to have something to do with DRM. From the associate help ,
“You can view and manage permission rights on your protected media files using alphanumerical keys. These keys specify rights that determine when you can play, display, execute or print media files. Rights for media files can also restrict the number of times the media can be rendered (played, displayed, executed or printed) or the period of time you are allowed to render the object before your rights to the media expire, blah blah, blah , creepy crawly creepy crawly…..”
Sheesh!!!! On my phone!!!!
I don’t even buy a certain mobile software vendor’s products, because their splash screen says something about DRM solutions. Pity!!! I could have really used one or two of their products…
Wonder what this is doing on an enterprise phone anyway???
November 1st, 2007 at 6:08 am
Thomas,
I also noted that the calendar and e-mail inbox changed places. The active standby screen also got a new (?) item “Standard e-mail”.
Initially I thought it was something very buggy that did not display at all. It, however, turned out to be a new e-mail indicator working in the same way as the “unanswered calls” or “new sms”-indicators. When there are unread messages it displays a line “n unread email messages”, else the indicator is not displayed.
I am trying to get used to this new featured and yesterday switched from having the old style “two latest messages from your inbox” (3 lines of text) to this new zero-or-one-line indicator. As a person that often has the active standby screen full of text, I think this new feature may be an improvement.
The old version is of course better if you usually have one or two unread messages since you immediately see what’s in your inbox.

I am using a Mac. How do I update the firmware? or I need to use a friend’s PC? Thank you!
November 1st, 2007 at 3:32 pm
the upgrade was smooth, without any problems and took about 15 minutes. Work fine for me, but i can’t say i see much difference comparing to old firmware. what i didn’t liked is that i have to reinstall all my programs that were in phones memory, and some of these that were on memory card.
November 1st, 2007 at 8:35 pm
Carlsberg,
Unfortunately the only way to upgrade is through a PC. Just borrow some time on a friend’s PC.
Cheers

KJ,
My e65 used to have the unread emails plugin even before the upgrade.
But it was not called “Standard Email”, it was called “Default Email Notif.”
(Are we talking about the same thing?)
The list of Active Standby plugins I have : (and they have not changed after the upgrade)
a) Active Standby Apps
b) Missed Call Notifier
c) Default Email Notifier
d) Message Notifier
e) Voice Msg. Notifier
f) Organizer
g) Act. Standby Inbox
h) To-Do
i) Music Player
j) Wireless Lan
k) Sim Services
The difference I noticed is that, earlier the “unread emails” notification used to work for any mailboxes I created, but it never worked for Mail4Exchange. For M4E, I still had to rely on the @ symbol that appears on the top right corner.
Now this is working for M4E also.
But I don’t know if this was just the case with me….since I have found the E65 quite unstable anyway, what with random reboots, hardware keys stopping to work until i reboot and “insert sim card”messages appearing suddenly even when the sim card was in place. After the upgrade, the problems have not gone away, but they SEEM to be less frequent so far.
My E61 used to be such a joyride in comparison
But then it didn’t have configurable active standby plugins, a voice mute button or the enhanced teamsuite. Guess this is the price I must pay for those……
November 2nd, 2007 at 3:48 am
Thomas,
I run my E65 in Swedish and was too lazy to switch language before posting
Yes, I meant the “Default Email Notifier”. I didn’t notice it before, but it’s quite possible it was there before. I’ll get my coat…
But to return to the your original question, yes, they’ve changed the order of the calender and Act.standby inbox. In an ideal world (or maybe in a couple of feature packs if we’re lucky) the user should have a possibility of reordering the active standby items.
Awfully sorry about the confusion and waste of bandwidth
November 2nd, 2007 at 5:35 am
KJ,
Thanks for responding. I don’t think you need to be so apologetic.
I was writing in so much detail since admin had invited people to record here any changes they noticed.
Reordering brings me to another of the crazy things about Nokia.
), but it can already reorder items in its active standby.
My wife uses a Nokia 6270 , a series 40 phone (i think).
Trust me, the phone ain’t all that smart (luckily she doesn’t read this blog
At the same time, the E65 claims to be one of the toppest-end business phones and we have to wait for a feature pack to get this.
It’s like there are multiple nokias.

Hi!
I’d like to comment on the firmware - does it eliminate the “lag-time” in when opening SMS messages? Or opening multimedia messages? I haven’t downloaded the thread yet as I read Shriram’s trail.
Wanted to be careful on this one. I lost data when I was still using my E61 then. Thank you very much!

hello…
i just want to may this clear… is it worth changing my firmware?
or should i just stick to this old firmware that im using?

November 2nd, 2007 at 11:36 am
Bogdan, how can I change my phones product code? Im getting tired of my phone constantly rebooting you know? And sometimes I have dropped calls and such and a software that I bought from Nokia isnt working because of the firmware issue. All this time there hasnt been a single software update for this phone. Always the other E-series phones and a lot of the N-series phones and once one is available I cant get it…
November 2nd, 2007 at 2:00 pm
To Paolo:
“does it eliminate the “lag-time” in when opening SMS messages? Or opening multimedia messages?”
I can only speak for myself but in my case new firmware did the trick! The lag is gone! Well maybe not entirely gone, but much better. And that goes for sending as well. Now there is no lag after sending either. So if you ask me - yes, definitely worth updating!
And as for a changelog, there is one more thing I noticed. There is a character conversion while sending SMS msgs. It means that if you write your SMS msgs with T9 dictionary and it happens that you have words with special characters (like for example “ą” or “ć” in polish alphabet) the phone automatically changes those letters to standard ones while sending (to stay with the example: “ą” is sent as “a”, “ć” is sent as “c”).
The whole thing is about the GSM 7-bit alphabet. There is only 128 characters in the standard GSM alphabet table for SMS. That is why you can use 160 characters in the SMS msg which cannot exceed 140 bytes. Now if you used a letter that is not in the GSM 7-bit table than the phone has to use another character table, which in our case is called UCS2 (2-byte Universal Character Set) and because of the space that it needs in 140 bytes of the msg your phone cuts your msg and all you get is 70 characters to use. When you exceed - of course you start another msg.
So as you can see this is not a minor issue. All s40 nokia phones have this character conversion working by default. For whatever reason this was not the case in most symbian phones including e65. Now they finally managed to “fix” this. So now if you set your phone in SMS options to use “reduced support” in “character encoding” your phone will automatically convert the characters to standard 7-bit GSM table signs saving space in the SMS and saving your money

Hi,
I upgraded my E65 few days ago. There are some positives and more and more negatives. I am facing problems like the phone freezes quite often.
The old utilities like blackberry, truphone are not working.
Any one else facing such problems?
Also I have noticed, the applications on my memory card, get killed automatically, which were usually running in the background.
Suggestion are all wel-come.

Hello!
After upgrading to 2.0xxx i notice (as others do) that the e65 slowed down very much. Is there a chance to downgrade to 1.0xxx? Can some help me with my question?
Thanks! Martin
November 3rd, 2007 at 8:21 am
guys,
my nokia E65 phone was working fine, but i face a reboot problem, it rebooted every 6 or 7 hours, i don’t know why. My friends told me to format it and install the latest update. i installed the 1.0633.18.01
Now i noticed some changes:
first, i used to see the call timer while talking on the phone, i had a timer on the screen to see the seconds running, just to know how much i’ve been in the conference before hanging up. Now, it’s not availbe, i just can put a summary after the call.
Also, i used to install the Opera mini 4 beta software for the web browsing. Now when i entered the opea mini website , they told me that my phone doesn’t support opera mini 4 , i should install opera mini 3.
Any idea wut is the problem i’m facing?
and if my phone software isn’t the latest version, from where i acn get the new one, and hoe can i install it.
Thx

Trevor, look at http://www.ipmart-forum.com/showthread.php?t=129752 for instructions on how to change product code.
November 4th, 2007 at 11:46 am
I have upgraded to 2.0XXX and I have no problem. Truphone works fine on my phone. But software on the memory card has to be reinstalled. If you have something important on the memory card, make a backup. Then format the memory card and reinstall your software. When you want to upgrade to the firmware, make sure that the memory card is not in the phone. Also, hard reset could be helpful.

Downgrading to v1.x did not work at my local Nokia Centre….

I am from India, I saw the latest software update in Europe, but when I visited Nokia Asia site and found that E65 doesn’t have software update. Should I update from Europe. Will that create any problem when I update from Europe site since my phone is from India.
November 9th, 2007 at 2:09 am
Carel:
I faced the issue even when I upgraded to MFE2.0 (on my older firmware). The only way I could get BB installed was to do a hard reset (*#7370#). I took a backup and then installed BB Connect & restored the backup.
I still (with the newer firmware) cannot have both installed together. It is either MFE or BB.
Specifically trying to answer your question on BB version not authorized for the current firmware, I guess you will have to wait till Nokia releases a BB Connect for the newer firmware version. Nokia’s website (from where you download BB Connect - http://businesssoftware.nokia.com) clearly states that this version of BB requires 1.XX.XXXX.
Point to note: I tried the above hard resdet procedure with my older firmware & have NOT tried it with the newer firmware. I am assuming it will be no different.
November 9th, 2007 at 2:12 am
Krishna:
I am from India too. I downloaded from the european website & I don’t have any problems. I guess this upgrade is based on the phone model number.
If your model number does have a firmware available, you should be able to install it.
November 9th, 2007 at 2:15 am
Another thought on the newer firmware:
My device was quite fast for the first couple of days and it is crawling now. Everytime I have to search for a contact from the list, it takes eternity. It seems to have slowed down the device significantly.
I am still facing issues with Wi-Fi (earlier reported).

Thanks.

Deepu,
try this hard reset steps:
- power the phone off,
- press and keep down the keeys green/talk + ‘3′ + ‘*’, - power on the phone.
- release the keys when the formatting starts.
hope it help reset the phone…. good luck..
From my experience, after the Firmware update, you need to hard reset the phone, format the microSD card, and reinstall all the apps you have on memory card.
so far the new firmware running great…!!

I’ve updated the e65. Seemed to work ok, but caught it shutting down suddenly upon completion of a VoIP call. This is the reason I have upgraded the phone in the first place. Dissapointing…. The problem is not a connecion or such as it relly seems to happen on VoiP call completion, as when I hang up, I would say 1-2 seconds after.
November 20th, 2007 at 8:01 pm
try not to start the hard reset with the old microSD inside. The apps that you installed will trigger the Settings Wizard and if those apps are corrupt they will screw the reinstall.
Does not seem much different from the prev fw, except for the Actv Keys and different themes (use Download to get Dots Blue).
But that could be that I’ve migrated mostly to 3rd-party apps.

I have never done an upgrade before. would i have to backup all my contacts and pictures. would i lose any saved information on the phone or installed software? thanks!
November 21st, 2007 at 6:51 pm
My phone just started repeatedly sending the same message over and over again until it was removed from the outbox. After a few power-downs and resets the phone then refused to send messages at all as they would just sit in my outbox trying to resend every few minutes.
The update said i had the latest version (even though i didn’t have) so i sent it back for repair and now i have the latest version and i’m happy once more.
I too, like others, had the phone lock problem and it couldn’t be removed, causing me to take the battery off every 2 hours.

hi there
i currently live in south africa and cannot update my E65 firmware although there is a firmware update available.
i know that certain agreements have to be cleared with the mobile operators etc but why should they have a say in the version of software that i run on my device that i have bought myself?
i am totally irritated by this as my E65 crashes regularly and the firmware update will resolve this. i am also a power user of the business functionality on the phone with MFE etc
crap!

My update did not work and Nokia support had to send me a new phone as they could not recover! The phone and laptop were hung during the update process.

The occasional power off on slider action seems to be a battery contact issue. Battery terminals need tightening with small screwdriver. Phone ok after this.

Sounds like a lot of problems with this firmware update!! I have an Orange-locked E65 and the Nokia software still doesn’t allow an upgrade. Also, Bodgan, re the link you provided for changing product codes, the links within that other page - for the NSS program and the other program for enabling disabled options - are no longer useable. NSS file is corrupt and the other link is dead.
November 28th, 2007 at 4:10 pm
Crashing problems? Check your battery contacts. I bought spare batteries for my E65 from various sources. I ended up with the Original Nokia battery, another which says “Nokia” on it but doesn’t have the hologram, and a third which just says “BL-5F” and clearly isn’t original. I used them interchangeably. The phone would sometimes spontaneously go black, when I handled it. I discovered that if I gently torqued the phone in a certain direction I could consistently make it die. Tooks weeks to think it might be battery contacts. Switched to the Original battery ONLY for a week and, uh, um…
… guess what.
A close look at the contacts on the worst offending battery makes it clear: they don’t “spring back” against the phone’s contacts. They just bend apart on first use and stay bent apart. Cheap Chinese crap.
Not worth it to save a few bucks, IMHO. maybe this will give soemthing useful for those of you who are experienceing spontaneous blackness.
Cheers

I have an E65 with the random reboot problem, running code version 1.0633.18.01. Using the product code from my phone I got “No Updates Available” from NSU, using the code 0536850 supplied by Bogdan (Thankyou) it came up with version 2.0633.65.01.
To apply the update, I had to change the product code on the phone, the following link is for an N73, but works just as well on an E65, a link to the Nemisis software is on the web page.

Use the prduct code above, please take heed of the warnings as th code change is at the owners risk, that said I have not had any issues at all.
Thankyou to all the people who have left useful comments esp Bogdan.

Hello, I’ve been looking everywhere for some help on this phone, I’m hoping I can get some answers here. My E65 has recently stopped playing a sound alert when I receive SMS, however it will still play alarms and will play sounds for incoming calls and will play mp3’s. According to the store I bought it from it is most likely a software glitch. I haven’t downloaded any new software for my phone so it has picked up an update from the control towers (according to the store) Their advice was to send it to Nokia and it would take 6-8 weeks to be fixed which is completely inconveniant. Has anyone else had this problem? How did you fix it? Please contact via here or sair_85@hotmail.com
I need help fixing this and Nokia and the store don’t seem to be the ones who can give it to me. Cheers,
Sair

Hey Ravi, it might not be the issue at all. But have you checked that the number of the SMS Centre (which is required to successfully send text messages) is still set correctly?I just had an issue with an e65 and a SIM Card from T-Mobile USA, which would not automatically reprogram the SMSC Number. The result was the no messages could be sent anymore. You will have to google or ask for the AT&T SMS Centre Number. Program it in the Text Messages Section of the Messaging Settings. Good luck and Aloha From Kona!

Thankyou René
That totally solved my problem although i was on a 45 min with the at&t customer service to get them to give me the message center number. They gave me this number +13123149810 and it works.
Thanks Again ! Ravi

Hi all,
i even upgraded my new E65 to the new firmware V2.0633.65.01. My subjective impression is that the old fimware was a little bit faster. Any ideas how to speed up the E65 a bit? Or did I forget to configure something?
Thanks

Just wanted to share my experience.
I have 3 UK E65. Wanted to upgrade firmware to version 2 as there were some bugs in v1. NSU hasn’t yet got an update for the 3 branded phone, so I :
1) Backup up phone settings with nokia utility
2) used nemesis to change the product code to the generic EURO 1 code.
3) updated f/w to version 2 via NSU
4) Flash completed successfully
5) Changed product code back to original with Nemesis
6) Did a restore with nokia utility to restore settings.
The result ? At first all seems to have went well. I even made a test call and it was working. However, i couldn’t access the settings page as it said that a backup/restore session was active. So i turned the phone off to restart.
I have now ended up with a BRICK. The phone will not restart and gives the message ‘phone startup failed’. Tried all sorts including holding green, * and 3 on power up. No joy.
Have now sent the phone off for repairs at the local shop.
So sad …
I don’t know what killed it. I suspect it’s the restore session…
So if you do go ahead and use nemesis & NSU, DO NOT restore from a previous phone backup.

Kevin- you are quite correct, changing product codes using Nemesis and then doing a phone restore (that was backed up from a different product code) is a no-no. Depending on the original product code and the new product code chosen, you may just get lucky and the handset functions after a restore, but more often than not you will end up ‘bricking’ your device. There are countless N95 owners that fell foul of this unwritten rule trying to remove Vodafone Live.
Once you have updated your handset firmware, you should input the settings manually. Contacts can safely be restored from the SIM card (if you copied them to the SIM before reflashing), and if your handset has a SD device, obviously all data / applications saved on the card will still be intact.
Some handsets allow you to backup to the SD, but I have heard reports that restoring from the SD after changing product codes has the same effect as restoring from the NSS - a dead handset!
Once your product code has been changed and the new firmware loaded, you can then safely backup and restore without problems, but do not use old backup’s created with other product codes.
The moral of the story is that you should change your product code when you first receive your handset, that way a backup and restore is unnecessary, however in the real world, not always possible.

Hi, so is there any way to revert back to the original Nokia e65 firmware. Use the phone with 3 here in Australia. Eversince I upgraded to the newest firmware, I could hardly send emails. These get deferred all the time. And that’s one of the reasons I purchased this phone … to be able to send and receive emails.
Anyway feedback would be much appreciated.

NO WAY TO SET A TIMED PROFILE?
My E65 is new and came with the new firmware. Can’t comment on the changes, however I notice that one of the most basic features is missing that was on the older phones. There is no way to set a timed profile. This makes the phone useless from a business perspective because if I set it to silent I would like it to start making sounds again after my meeting.
I am extremely disappointed by the E65, the software looks like Nokia but feels like it was really designed by microsoft, all flash but basic features are gone/missing or poorly thought out.

I have been doing a lot of research to relplace my very aged nokia 6600. I finally decieded to replace it with a nokia e65. In my quest to find where to buy one I came across a nokia e65 gmrs. I have tried to find out more about this version but not have been able to find something on the web. Can you help me explain how this works on the nokia e65 and if i can use it in the USA.

My E65 has Firmware 1.0633.18.01 installed and the “Nokia Software Updater” tells me that there are currently no software updates available.
The E65 is a very frustrating device. The WLAN is practically useless since you cannot connect to VPNs. The preinstalled VPN-client is disfunctional and since you are unable to define proxies for the browser or the mailclient other VPN-clients (like putty) cannot be used either. If you intend to use university or other institutional WLANs you can forget about the E65. It is a crappy device and I would not recommend it to anyone.

Hey i updated my E 65 to the new firmware but after that i get a “-34 conncetion error” when programms try to use my wifi connection. the nokia brwoser is working well.
any ideas? thanks!!
April 12th, 2008 at 10:25 am
Hi,
I noticed an earlier message by Vinod (about 5 back) saying that his E65 powers off when you close it. I was (and possibly am still) having that problem. The symptom was that you would slide open the phone to type something, then slide close and the phone would power off instantly! Almost as if the act of sliding the phone closed pulled the plug on the power. I spoke to 3’s no-help helpline and they suggested reformatting my microSD card (2GB) - I don’t think that helped, but maybe it’s too early to say.
Can I just ask you gurus a quick question? Why does the Nokia updater not show an available update for my phone (my E65 is at 1.0633.18.02)? I mean if there is an update to fix problems on the phone, why doesn’t Nokia make it widely available? It sounds like some people have bricked their phones by changing the product code stored on the firmware - which is ridiculous. Can someone please:
1) say if it’s worth updating to a newer firmware (there isn’t a consistent message in the mails I’ve read)
2) provide a step by step (idiot’s guide) to flashing the firmware (with details of how to change the product code without bricking)
Hope a guru can help!
Cheers, Jon
