Google Gmail Settings for the Nokia E61 - Pt. 1

When connecting to Gmail, does the following message ring a bell - "This site has sent an untrusted certificate. Continue anyway?" If it does you might want to consider changing your settings for Gmail on your Nokia E61.

If you change your outgoing mail server setting for gmail from "smtp.gmail.com" to "smtp.googlemail.com" and

your incoming mail server setting from "pop.gmail.com" to "pop.googlemail.com" on your Nokia E61 you will no longer recieve the untrusted certificate warning.

You can now connect directly to gmail from your Nokia E61 without having the message pop-up. Four seconds and one click saved per connection ;)

If I connect to gmail it won’t let me disconnect but shows the disconnecting-sign until I turn off/on my phone. Very irritating.

Rather than do something like this, I figured I’d get the SSL certificate onto my phone. Luckily, someone did this already: http://kevinhenrikson.com/2006/06/18/gmail-pop-ssl-certs-for-symbian-nokia-phones/

    Hi!

I remember someone was asking if it was possible to get gmail to pop up more freguently than every 30 minutes that sympian provides.

This is one way to do it and to get it almost in realtime. When I did try this out it took about 3 minutes after I had sent the messagage before my E61 “picked it up”.

Go to http://www.widsets.com and click on “Library” and pick “Gmail” from there.

This webb site is also interesting if you like to stay in touch via RSS with things you are interested in.

Keep on testing E61. Very interesting product from Nokia.
Thanks Jorma Ollila for this and good luck when you retire.

That is a great idea. I saw the Gmail Widset but haven’t tried it out yet. Thanks for the tip Hocki.

[...] So I decided to hack around not being able to get the email client to do what it’s supposed to in terms of fetching updates by setting up SMS notifications and using GMail. Gmail has a POP interface, which I found out from the fantastic E-Series blog does work with the messenger app. Both POP and SMTP actually. So I can get my notifications via SMS, and if necessary either connect to messenger or connect with the browser and do what I need to. I did have to poke around a bit to get this working though. Seems like it might be a TMo specific problem. Fetching email was fine, but SMTP didn’t work as described other places. I had to turn on encryption, but put the port back to 25 (standard SMTP). I remember someone mentioning that somewhere, maybe in a post about using GMail + TMo on the 6680 or something. So here are my settings for the connections (this seemed to be the trouble part): [...]

  15. Sylvain Says:

My E61 can’t seem to send out email… it crashes with a blue dialog box

I set the GMAIL account as people have said (with pop.googlemail.com and smtp.googlemail.com). I receive my email fine, but when I reply I get the “sending email” message in the blue box and then I just get the empty blue box and it seems like the thing is hung and I can only get out by pressing ‘cancel’ on the right button.

If I change the reply option to ‘on next connection’ rather than ‘immediately’, then the reply just pile up with all the others in my outbox. I use the following setup: smtp.googlemail.com, StartTLS, port 25. Tried many variations (port 465, etc.) but nothing seems to work. I use my own wireless access point.

Cheers for any help you can provide

  16. Sylvain Says:

    Problem solved: By rebooting!

Strange… I powered off the E61, turned it back on, then tried again and it all worked fine, sending out the dozen messages in the queue. This is the second time that I get problems with an application that get solved by ‘rebooting’… Keep that in mind if you ever have similar problems…

  17. jay Says:

everything seems to be working on my e61, but when i recieve e-mails, all the old e-mails in my gmail inbox disappear and only the new ones show up. they are not deleted from the server, just on the device.

in gmail, i’ve set “Enable POP for all mail (even mail that’s already been downloaded)”. though oddly, everytime i go back to that setting, it’s no longer selected. i’m guessing gmail makes that change after your first download of all e-mails.

any ideas about what i should do?

  18. Sinjin Says:

Thank you to Sylvain! I was having the saame problem sending email. I used your settings and now it works great! I have the Nokia E70 and love it! Just trying to get all the settings right gets a little frustrating. And NY has free WiFi all over the city, thanks to Nokia, so I don’t have to use up all of my data plan.

  23. Dave Says:

gMail on the E61 is beginning to bug me…

I can send and receive emails fine, but when I disconnect and then later reconnect, all the emails that were in my inbox on the E61 vanish but they’re still in the inbox on gmail.

From the comments here, sounds like quite a few folks have the same problem.

I’m on firmware version 1.06.10.04.04 model number RM-89 (a UK E61 on T-Mobile) and at the moment Nokia aren’t allowing firmware updates through their software updater program over the internet for this model for some reason (comes up as “no update for this phone”).

Anyone recommend a decent POP3 client that doesn’t lose emails out of the inbox?

I have a problem, even though all the settings are as they should be and my user name and password is exactly the same as what it would be if logging in from a computer, it’s still telling me that my user name and password are incorrect. Have spent hours on tinkering with the setting and finally found this site. can anyone help?

  29. Alex Says:

    Well,
I don’t know what I did, or didn’t do, or had done to me… but all of a sudden, bizMail.yahoo.com, which was deleting all eMails upon checking for new messages, is working properly now.
Now if only the E-Gods would do the same for gMail…

Whenever i send an email from gmail on a computer I get the message sent to me in new mail on the e62. Anyone know how to get around this?

  32. Teabot Says:

There seems to be a lot of discussion regarding the setting up of GMail on the E70 on the web, however I can’t find any information regarding the specific security settings for the pop/smtp servers.

For the incoming and outgoing servers should I be using SSL/TLS or StartTLS?

Someone complete the picture - please!

  33. Viktoria Says:

I’ve been trying to set up the email accounts on the N e61 putting the outgoing server, incoming server infos just the way I should (yahoo / gmail) but it’s not working. When trying to retrive my mails from yahoo, it keep asking my login and pw three times then it says that the server refused the connection, check name and password, but I’m sure that I enter the correct infos. Gmail is just keeps trying then after a while my phone says “connection time out” and nothing. I’m sure some settings are missing but what? It’s really annoying!!!! What am I missing???

  34. arsalan Says:

  35. Simon Says:

I have same problem as Viktoria where it asks for user/pass for 3 times and then error
    settings are for sure correct…

any one have solution to it?
does it have anything to do with the fact that i’m in canada?

  36. zak Says:

    Viktoria/Simon

Pls check that you have enabled POP retreival on your Gmail account.

  37. pacer Says:

It need hours to get gmail work with the E61. I’ve tried everything and this works for me:
    change to the newest firmware
if you restore the saved settings, delete the old gmail account (important!)
    set
ingoing to pop.googlemail.com SSL/TLS Port Standard (or 995)
outgoing to smtp.googlemail.com SSL/TLS Port Standard (or 465)
And: set you email-adress to xyz@googlemail.com (not xyz@gmail.com)

This will also solve the “old emails disappear”-Problem (Kumar, jay)

Is it that mail application on E61 does not have functionality to ask for user name and password.

  44. mantissa Says:

There’s definitely one critical point that should be emphasized - in particular that POP has to enabled in the Gmail Settings (on the web) before you configure and test your client. Your user account and password will constantly get rejected if you don’t.

  45. snehal Says:

There is no need to do R & D I think you need to reinstall after removing e61 once again…. your problem will be solved.

  49. Harry Says:

Just found a reply to my own question on getting my own emails sent to my inbox. Apparently that is how gmail works. They call it threads. From a MS Outlook user though, its confusing, and a waste of time, but some people say its easier because all your emails are in the Inbox. If anyone knows how to stop it, please tell me. I am thinking of putting a filter on my own gmail, so that it gets rejected as spam. Will that work???

    Incoming mail serv : pop.gmail.com
Access Point : T-mobile Internet (also works over wifi)

    APOP: Off

    Outgoing mail serv : smtp.gmail.com
    Security: StartTLS

  57. John C Says:

I don’t like using gmail from the web interface or from the gmail java client. I wanted to use POP/SMTP to get my gmail. Here is how I got POP3 gmail to work with the E61’s Email Client.

    1. Log into your gmail account and change your settings to allow POP3.
    2. On your phone, set up a new email account as normal.
    3. Set up the incoming/outgoing settings as follows:

    Incomming:

User name: The email address you typicall use to log into gmail. I.E. “your username”@gmail.com
Password: The password you typically use to log into gmail
    Incoming mail serv.: pop.gmail.com
Access point to use: Your choice
Mailbox name: Your choice, I choose “Gmail”
    Mailbox Type: POP3
    Security (ports): SSL/TLS
    Port: User Defined / 995
    APOP secure login: Off

    Outgoing:
My email Address: Your gmail email address
Username: Your gmail email address you typically use to login
Password: Your gmail passwork you typicall use to login
    Outgoing Mail serv: smtp.gmail.com
Access Point in use: Your choice
    Security (ports): SSL/TLS
    Port: User Defined / 465

That should get it going. You can customize how mail is stored on gmail from the gmail settings page. You can also set up auto retrieval from the settings on you phone. Just poke around the connection settings on your phone to see all the options. They are pretty self explainitory.

  58. Alexandru Szasz Says:

Gmail has finally added IMAP support, so now you can just check your inbox and leave the big pile of archive messages alone. Plus the communication is both ways so if you do something on the phone it reflects on gmail and vice versa.

    Now that is cool :)

  59. james Says:

I used the settings provided by all of the above. When I try to connect to GMail, it does NOT work. It just goes through the connect process, however, does not connect. I am using ATT (Cingular) in the US. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
