Nokia E51: Great Email Wizard
As many of you already know - I am absolutely addicted to push email. Although I tend to try out various push email solutions on my Nokia Eseries devices I always come back to Mail For Exchange.
The first thing I did on my brand new Nokia E51 was to set up my email. I was really impressed with the new email wizard. The set up was a breeze. Here are the screen shots to set up Mail For Exchange on Nokia E51.
For those of you who would like to try free push email I can gladly recommend Mail2Web who provides FREE Microsoft Exchange based email accounts which you of course can use with Mail For Exchange. Read my previous write-up of Mail2Web HERE.
The new email set up wizard has premier placement on the main screen.
Mail for Exchange is now included as one of the default email solutions - which makes perfect sense since the target customer most likely would like to set up enterprise (Microsoft Exchange based) email.
Step by step you are walked through the set up procedures and asked to enter the necessary information.
When you have entered all necessary settings the latest version of Mail for Exchange is downloaded.
This new set up procedure is a great improvement and really makes the set up of Mail for Exchange easy. I didn't use it to set up any other email accounts but I assume that the set up is roughly the same.
More about the Nokia E51 to come.
In the meanwhile, once again - AllAboutSymbian posted a very extensive review of the Nokia E51.

Mail2Web LIVE does work nicely. The problem here is that you need to get rid of your e-mail address with all the benefits you may have (larger storage, nicer web client with embedded instant messaging, etc.). For most people (me included), this is not really an option. Someone’s suggested that you forward your e-mail to your Mail2Web address so that you get notified of new mail, then go to the native client, retrieve your message there (AGAIN) manually and then reply. This is really not an option for most people either. I thank God (and my mail provider and the E61/E61i native e-mail client) for IMAP IDLE.
Another big limitation here (although this is really Mail for Exchange, not Mail2Web) is that this implementation only supports one e-mail address.

What is that third icon in the standby screen (looks a bit like a blue trumpet)?
November 15th, 2007 at 3:31 am
Erick, i think its visual radio…. Right Ed?
November 15th, 2007 at 3:51 am
hmm. also available for E90?
November 15th, 2007 at 10:02 am
@Erick,
Yes, that is Visual Radio.
@Satiesh
Mail2web is Microsoft Exchange based email so you need to use Mail For Exchange.
@Geekonimus,
I did eventuntually get my E90! I have written about it because you are doing an excellent job of covering everything E90 - http://eninety.wordpress.com/ but some posts are in the making.

I have no idea why but after installing SP2 on my exchange server, I am unable to retrieve e-mails using M4E, roadsync works fine, but I would love to go back to M4E. I get an error message: “system error, try again”. I have contacted my IT guy, AT&T, Nokia and Microsoft and nobody even expressed a desire to help me. Ed do you have any ideas?

For all the IMAP IDLE fans, try http://www.cortado.com. They are offering free IMAP IDLE push email & they also allow you to configure your sending address (your office email address for example) at no cost.
Cheers!
November 17th, 2007 at 11:27 pm
What’s Cortado offering that’s new? AOL has offered free IMAP IDLE for a long time. And on the mail client, you can specify your own address and SMTP server to send from your address. For example, I no longer need to do this now that Gmail is offering IMAP, but I had my Gmail e-mails forwarded to an AOL account. I was retrieving my mail via IMAP (and using IDLE to push) (because Gmail keeps all headers when forwarding, so you see it as you would on Gmail) and then replying using Gmail’s SMTP and my Gmail account, so neither I nor the user on the other end was ever aware of the AOL account that was in between. What does Cortado add to this setup?

Hi, I’m using E51 with M4E, is there a way to set the program to ask for a connection everytime you use it (like the browser and other apps do)?
I’m always in and out of offices (switching different wifi and hsdpa networks), and actually everytime I have to change the default connection used by M4E through the connection settings menu…..wasn’t it easy enough to put an “ask me everytime” options in the same menu?
Sometimes I wonder if the designers of the interfaces actually uses the functions they design the interface for
Great blog btw, and the E51 is a fantastic device….wasn’t so happy with a phone from my 6310i purchase
December 8th, 2007 at 3:29 pm
First of all great site. Log on everyday to check for new E-Series news.
Now onto a question. Can anyone tell me if there is a way that Good Messaging will work on the E51. My companys email used to be enabled to let me use M4E. But this was only a pilot, and i had to switch to Good. I have a Vodafone v1210 (Asus 1210) and good installs on this as its WM5. However i tried to install Good on the E51. I downloaded the .sis Good file and after using a Bluetooth keyboard to get over the issue of inputting a password Good wouldn’t recognise the mobile phone.
Does anyone know a workaround for this? If not, does anyone know if / when Good will support S60 FP1?
Thanks in advance
John

Hi Ad,
Could you explain how to set up a Gmail account on E51?. This mail2web thing seems not to work on my device. Though I`ve done everything according to what´s posted above.
As an adherent owner of two previous Communicators from Nokia I was logically contemplating to purchase E90. E51 appealed to my by its stunning simplicity and sharp sophistication… So I decided to try it, and so far, i think it`s the best smartphone I`ve ever had… Enjoying it.
Thanks

January 21st, 2008 at 2:26 am
The brochure says sync’s with outlook. This is all fine, except it sync’s everything except email! Is there a straightforward way to just resync pop email over bluetooth when i’m in the office? ie I can grab pop email while on the run and just sync/update with my pc later.
I don’t want to pay for these thirdparty service like seven, or install an exchange server, or even need a push service. Just something simple.
January 28th, 2008 at 3:56 am
Does anybody know if it is possible to select which contact folder to sync?
I have been using PC-Suite up until now, and have always made a subfolder to the default contactfolder in exchange, to use for synking my phone.
Now that I have moved to MFE I would still like to be able to control which contacts to have in my phone and which to have in outlook.
Anybody has any ideas?

Hi. I am having the same problem Ad had a while ago: E51 automatically created a POP3 Gmail email account. I then managed to set up a new account for Gmail with IMAP, but the old POP3 account is still in the listing. How can I delete it? I have looked everywhere without success. Does anyone know? I guess a hard reset would do the trick but I wouldn’t want to go down that road quite yet.
Thanks

Hi,
Here are the settings for Configuring IMAP4 on E51 for GMail. This is given
since native POP3 client doesnt work comfortable well on this handset and also the Nokia Support Centre is absolutely out of clue in giving help.
I also managed to get it from another blog, so wanted to share it over here
incase anybody needs/getting stuck in getting the needful configured.
Here it goes :
For Gmail(For Nokia E51):
Connection Settings > Incoming E-Mail
User name: Enter your complete Gmail e-mail address including ‘@gmail.com’
Password: Enter your Password
Incoming Mail Server: imap.gmail.com
Access Point in Use: Select the active data connection
Mailbox Name: Whatever you like
Mailbox Type: IMAP4
Security (ports): SSL/TLS
Port: Default
Connection Settings > Outgoing E-Mail
My e-mail address: Enter your complete Gmail e-mail address including ‘@gmail.com’
User name: Again enter your complete Gmail e-mail address including ‘@gmail.com’
Password: Enter your password
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com
Access Point in Use: Select the active data connection
Security (ports): StartTLS
Port: 587
User Settings:
My Name: Whatever name you’d like to appear in your sent emails
Send Message: Choose ‘Immediately’ if you would like your phone to connect to the internet and send the message everytime you send an e-mail. Otherwise choose ‘during next connection’
Send copy to self: Choose yes if you would like a copy of all mails that you send using your mobile, to be sent to your inbox too.Otherwise choose No.
Include Signature: Your choice. If you choose yes, enter the signature text
New E-Mail alerts: On
Reply to: If you would like people to reply to a different e-mail id then the current one, enter that.Else choose Off.
Delete E-mails From: Select Phone or Server. If you select phone, th emails get deleted only from the phone, although the header still remains till the next time you refresh. What this means is that mails deleted from you phone will continue to remain on your server and will be accessible the next time you access your mail using a PC.
Retrieval Settings:
E-Mail to retrieve: No choice here. Gmail only allows you to retrieve headers first. If you feel a mail is important you can select it and download the entire message later.
Retrieval Amount: Set how many e-mails you would like downloaded
IMAP4 folder path: This is set to ‘Unix path’ by default. Let it be
Folder Subscriptions: No changes required here
Automatic Retrieval: Select E-mail retrieval and set it to ‘Enabled’.
Retrieval Days: All Days
Retrieval Hours: All Hours
Retrieval Interval:Set it to 5 mins if you would like e-mails to get downloaded to your phone almost as soon as they arrive (Like Push E-Mail). Else select a time interval as desired.
Thank You!

To delete a particular mailbox on the E51.
Go to “messaging” then click on “options”. Within this menu click on “settings” followed by “E-mail”. This menu will then ask what you want your default mailbox to be with each mailbox you have created listed. Click on the mailbox that is not needed then press “options” and delete.

Hi folks…
Have two E51 devices… set both up to synch with our exchange server.
One works, one dosen’t
account name / server etc all correct.
The device that does not connect / synch has error message “System error, try again later” and nothing else.
O2 blaming the exchange, and the exchange blaming O2!
anybody able to shed some light on this, much appreciated.

June 20th, 2008 at 10:14 am
Are the phones linked to the same account? Could be that the exchange server isn’t letting multiple phones connect at once? I run my E60 off of exchange but have never tried having multiple phones access it at once. Could also be a limitation of MfE.
Also, depending on the phones set up on O2, the provider could be blocking the ports required to access the exchange server. I know this happens with the newer plans on Rogers in Canada, but as I have an older plan I am not affected.
