Nokia E51: More Enhancements
The more I use the Nokia E51 the more I like the device~! Here is today's list of features I really appreciate.
A dedicated Voice Key for Mute/Unmute
Sure, this feature was introduced in Nokia E65 but the positioning on the Nokia E51 is better - on the side of the device. Having a dedicated key for Mute/Unmute is big. No more fumbling around when you are on a conference call and quickly need to mute or unmute your device.

Better display of contacts
This is another great improvement. Compare the display of the contacts application to the left (screen shot from a Nokia E60) to the one to the right (Nokia E51). Notice the difference?
The data description, "First Name" etc. is no longer bold and finally smaller than the actual data. The result is that one new line of contact data is displayed. Very, very good. Thank you S60 UI designer. Next time you revamp this application might I suggest you try to squeeze in first and last name in the same field?
Better Alarm
The alarm in the clock application is greatly improved. The alarm function now supports multiple and repeating alarms.
Another good feature is that each alarm can be assigned a description so that you know what the alarm is to remind you of.
I am so glad that many of the core S60 features are improved in this version - S60 3.1.
Some more features of the device I like:
- Massive amount of memory - 130 MB
- Great battery life 1050 mAh which translates into a standby time of around 13 days or 4+ hours of talk time
- Speed - the Nokia E51 is noticeably faster than its predecessor
- Looks! Not really a feature but the device looks great and fits perfectly in your hand.
More to come…
AllAboutSymbian posted an extensive review of the Nokia E51. Verdict - they like it too.

So does it have a total of 128MB of RAM or 96MB like the original specs indicate?
November 12th, 2007 at 9:54 pm
130MB of internal storage
96 MB system RAM, ~50MB free

Mmm, very interesting. I’m using E65 and I hope these enhancements can be applied through firmware update.

The last two are thankfully present in all S60 3rd Feature Pack 1

Thanks a lot !

It still suffers from one of the biggest problems of all the Nokia Eseries devices, though. Huge fonts! Look at those screen shots of the contacts and alarm. You could get a lot more information on the screen and still keep it readable by using a better font…

Where did you buy your phone, and how did you do the overseas purchase?
November 20th, 2007 at 3:48 am
I just update the firmware of my E65 but the contacts aren’t like this… the data description is bigger than the actual data…
there’s outthere another update for my E65 or this feature is only for E51?

Does the LED flash for appointments and alarms as well?
December 11th, 2007 at 2:48 am
E51 now come with 128 MB Internal memory… and 512 MB MicroSD Card… its awesome…. E65 or E61i comes only with 256MB MicroSD Card…

My E51 real standby time is about 3 days with 3g, no wlan scanning and about 30 minutes talking/day.After I had a K800 with 6-7 days standby 3g on, the Nokia E51 is very weak in standby time.

Does the mute button work with bluetooth headsets as well?
December 28th, 2007 at 3:06 am
I love the short cut keys on my new E51 as well as the alarm clock settings but for the life of me cannot seem to work out where the count down timer and stop watch are?
December 29th, 2007 at 7:48 am
My E51 with just GSM, no WLAN, no 3rd party apps gives
3.7 hour talk time
30.3 hours standby [in a total of 34 hours before a recharge]
But with WLAN scanning on but i never used internet the performance was horrible
10 mins talk time
6 hour standby. this was a nightmare with no phone in office for half day.
now i need to figure out how can i use the e51 features (like browsing with WLAN) and still make the phone work atleast 18 hours.

I’ve just got my E51 (upgrading from an E60)… I backed up my E60 using the Nokia PC Suite but when I restore the SMS messages all the contacts names are not displayed (only the phone number). The same contacts are all in the phone (I sync it using Mail for Exchange) and were sync’d before I ran the restore. Anyone seen this before and know a way to get the contact name on the SMS to show up again? I have about 2000 SMS that I like to be able to search now and then, so not knowing who a message is from without working out the phone number is a bit of a pain! Thanks!

Got my new E51, although fst bluetooth key works, the similar silent mode key does not. Awaiting my second exchange. Has anybody else had the same fault/problem?
In reply to PaulJ question on PC Sync. I too had a similar problem when changing from 6233 to E51. You have to connect both phones on one PC, manually select all messages and paste in a new folder in saved messages in E51. make sure the contacts are pasted in phone memory and not in card memory. Hope that works for you. ps 2000 messages, i though i was doing good with 200.
Overall good phone but. more editing, copying and pasting faciolities overall in 6233. eg when composing new message in E51 you cannot insert (by search, find and paste) a contact from your phone book nor insert a number or email adress. This is a good function on 6233.
E51 nice and sylish, need improvements in functions internally especially text messaging.

Thanks for the info Rajak, I tried to reproduce the way you did this but wasn’t successful. In the Nokia PC Suite I can’t see anything other than Inbox/Drafts/Outbox and it won’t let me paste into the Inbox folder (and if I paste into Drafts I lose the “from” details. I tried creating an Archive folder under the “My Folders” section on the phone, but I can’t get to this folder from the PC Suite (apparently a known issue with PC Suite).
I love the E51, but this issue with backup/restore of SMS seems to be a big oversight by Nokia and they seem to have gone out of their way to make restoring SMS messages as difficult as possible (i.e. restricting paste into Inbox, not making archive folders visible etc etc).

How do I use IM and Pushmail via WLAN??? Do I need a third party software for these to work?
January 28th, 2008 at 5:12 am
Check if you have duplicated phonenumbers for your contacts, that’s normally the reason for this problem. Have seen this problem several times in my Nokia N80 and N95..

Did any one faced any network problem with phone.
I.e it does not restores connection to your service provider after coming from no network to network zone. Effectively I have to restart my phone every now and then.

Hi. If you still have both phones, the best way to get the messages from one phone to another is to use the Data Transfer application to Bluetooth the messages from the old phone to the new one. You initiate the transfer from the new phone. If you can’t find Data Transfer, it’s sometimes called Switch in some phones I think. You can also use this app to synch contacts, gallery (although it takes ages with all those MP3s etc) Calendar, Messages etc. HTH.

I recently bought an E51. I like it a lot so far, except I cannot believe that Nokia did not include a stopwatch, and a countdown timer. I used those features on my really old SE T630 almost daily. Its a huge letdown. Now I am trying to find a symbian app that can do it. I found “Best Timer” but that wont install due to a certificate error.
If anyone knows one where I can find a Symbian app that will provide timer and stopwatch features, please post it here. Thanks.

You asked for WiFi? Nokia gave you with HSDPA.
You asked for business needs? Nokia gave you with multimedia.
Nokia E51 gave you pleasures,
but remember for Indonesian, Telkomsel have not recognized it
for its 3G/HSDPA setting.
Not a big deal, I need Wifi more than 3G/HSDPA, because there is
none support in my home.

@danny
I’m from indonesia n i found that’s nothing wrong with telkomsel 3G’s settings on my e51 phones, although no hsdpa signal on my region so i can’t tested the performance speed of hsdpa. But that’s ok coz my most awaited features is on there, wifi. FYI it’s the cheapest wifi phones available on the stores right now in indonesia (even in the the world, i think).
But there’s bug on my phones. The battery can’t long lasting even wlan scanning off n there’s a delay in booting up n enter selection menus. Is anyone face the same problem with me? I found my friend’s 6120 startup time was much better than mine
