Nokia E51: Dedicated Bluetooth Key & More
Here is the last of 4 blog posts focused on new, interesting features of of Nokia E51. The previous posts are here, here and here.
One touch Bluetooth activation.
The Nokia E51 is equipped with a new, dedicated Bluetooth key. Pressing this key will activate or deactivate Bluetooth.
Sure, there is a convenient shortcut to turn on Bluetooth on other Eseries devices ("Blue Function" Key + "Ctrl" key) but this new function/key is one tad bit better.
Another great improvement is the support for variable font size.
The font size can now be set to small, normal or large. This and many other software features of the Nokia E51 is part of the new version of Symbian, S30 3.1, which the Nokia E51 uses. For the rest of us we can always rely on a great piece of software which provides the same functionality for the rest of the Eseries devices - Font Magnifier from Psiloc.
Another enhancement of the Nokia E51 is the greatly improved ability to personalize the device with themes.
Using "Themes" in the "Tools" menu it is possible to edit the Power save mode to display personalized text or animation.
Another interesting new feature are 3-D Tones which will let you edit your ring tones and notifications with various options such as spitch transition, sound trajectory, interval and reverberation.

I really like the phone’s design and features. Have it less than 2 months but I hate that I get all these scratches on the screen. The E70 I have is much more scratch proof and that one I have for more than a year.
Anyone else having scratches on the screen?

Been using this phone for about 2 weeks now and it’s brillaint! Very fast compared to my E65 and has everything in it. If this had a build in GPS it would be a perfect phone.

Hmh “new features”?
E90 has those all, font size change, personalized text in power saver, and 3-D tones.

Klaas,
Exim produces great screen protector. I use one on my e61. You can easily find them even over Ebay for few dollars.

I have had an E70 for over a year and really like it, but the battery life, when WiFi is turned on, is awful–less than 12 hours.
I like what I see and read about the E51, but would like to ask a couple of questions:
1) Text entry? Is it predictive text or is there a keyboard hidden somewhere (like on the E70)
2) Display is 240 X 320, which seems small.
Thanks,
Michael

i love this phone. it’s the phone i’ve always wanted and cant eblieve i actually got. beautiful simple design. high quality keys for fast texting. the processor seems to be really FAST. much faster than my clunky boxjob N73. love s60 v3.1, everything is where it feels it needs to be. love wifi. love voip - wish the battery would last a bit longer on it but that’ll come. lastly i love nokia beta labs. great to make an investment in a phone and know that there’s people out there striving to make your UI even better. great blog too

Hi to All,
I have been using Nokia E70 since more than 1.5 Years now and its working perfectly well except the outside housing is wearing out and keypads are almost wearing out.
I checked with Nokia at many of their service center but unfortunately they dont have any new spares for this Phone, So I suggest you guys not to buy this Phone because as per information Nokia has stopped this Model and they donot give any support on this.
On other hand I would request if someone can find me new housing with new keypads and joystick so that I can replace them with my phone and start working as previously. I am ready to pay for the same at reasonable amount.

In relation to the Nokia E51, can someone tell me if it supports GoodLink email solution? I have tried to install but can’t get it to install.
Any help would be appreciated.

There is a screen protector on my E51 now, but I don’t like them…
The Nokia E70 I use as a backup phone now and for TruPhone. The E51 it’s battery lasts long and I think it may even be better than the E70. Lacks the qwerty however but I don’t really miss it.
My E51 is connected with BlackBerry 24/7 and it seems to drain the battery less than when I used it with the E70. As for speed, the E51 is the fastest S60 I’ve seen. I use the BB version for E90, there is no E51 specific version available at the Nokia website.
Killer app is emTube (YouTube for S60), speed and screen resolution of the phone give a better experience (or almost) than when using a PC!

yes unfortunately lots of scratches
i was dump enough to carry it around with my keys in the pocket. Thanks for the exim tip. I love the phone anyway. Very good quality.
The 3d sounds are useless imo, but the blue key is very handy! Especially with a blue headset.

Does the Exim cover the whole top black area surrounding the screen or is it just a rectangle for the screen?

re themes you have to download them within the phone
you go to themes, select download and then type in the web page where they are, then download them like that
good luck
(if you find any nice ones ie. actually a bit classy with no porn or cartoon characters, perhaps post a link to them here…

E51 Annoyances;
Just to balance the glowing reports here, a few niggles that really annoy me.
No way to transfer contacts to and from E51 via spreadsheet. You have to use Outlook, which I dont, and even if i did there are several issues with that if you dont want all your outlook contacts on your phone.
The Toggle Silent mode works on some and not other handsets.
The contacts app that Nokia provides is poor.
Display of saved picture for incoming call is a tiny thumbnail
No ‘lookahead’ of typed words when texting.
No list of most used text numbers when texting
When you send a text and the contact has multiple numbers but only one is a mobile, it doesnt just use the mobile number but asks which of their numbers, mobile or landline, you want to use!WHY would I send a text to a landline?
When I make a call it frequently asks me if I want to make a video or voice call. I am never going to make a video call, dont know if that can be turned off?
I know some of these can be fixed with add on programs but why spend another $100 when for example, my previous cheap Sony Ericsson did just about all these.
Email and web browsing are good, but on the whole I am very disappointed in the E51.
ALl of tehs ewere on my previous basic Sony Ericssona nd I may be going back to that

After 4 month of search: still no way to use voip service live voiptunt voipbuster or voipbusterpro : I can register with service but when I try to make a call I have “Connection error” , only Free (adsl provider in France) works.
I have firmware 100.34.20 and I tried many different idea without any luck.
Same parameters with same wifi AP works well with Nokia E800.
any idea ?
