New Firmware For Nokia E61i
UPDATED WITH LIST OF CHANGES BELOW THE FOLD:
There is a new firmware available for Nokia E61i. There is nothing about the firmware on Nokia's device software update page yet, but the software is available when using Nokia Software Updater. The new firwmare version is 2.0633.65.01

It is important to note that availability of new device firmware depends on a number of factors. Region, language and of course carrier version are variables that influence when new firmware is available.
My Nokia E61i is a non-carrier branded version, the unlocked plain version, and when I tried NSU there was new software available.
Here are a few changes that I have noticed. Please feel free to point out more changes that you have come across:
Predictive text input:![]()
![]()
This one is strange. This feature shows up but I couldn't get it to work. Has anyone been able to enable this? I really like the idea of having predictive text as a feature even on a QWERTY device.
Improvements to calendar layout:
The calendar can now display the week number or the week dates in the month view.
Compare the new layout, above left, to the calendar of the previous firmware, above right.
Different active standby layout:
Notice how the calendar now is above mail on the screenshot above. Compare to the layout of the previous firmware above, right. Could this be isolated to usage with Mail for Exchange?
A number of minor changes:
For an example, notice how the terminology changes from "customize" to "personalise"
The two new themes that first appeared on the new Nokia E65 firmware, Dots Plum and Dots Pink, are now available:

The update supposedly, also includes changes/enhancements to:
- Web browser
- Bluetooth
- VoIP
- WLAN
BlackBerry Connect seems also to have gotten a refresh. There is a version available BBC 4.0 (7.45.0) which supports the new firmware.
One word of caution - although the firmware update was a cakewalk for me, do READ THE INSTRUCTIONS carefully before updating.
THANK YOU Kevin!

So this mean that NO MORE FIRMWARE UPDATE for E61??
I am so saaad..
November 19th, 2007 at 11:35 pm
@ ericko:
im glad that there is no new firmware - i hate to spend a whole day do setup my e61. reinstall all software etc. …
There is no new E61 Firmware necessary, i think. I have found no bugs etc. in v3.0633

Jagged text means no FP1, and I was hopin. Just did the update, nothing serious yet.
November 20th, 2007 at 12:12 am
Hey Guys
I upgraded mine and found that not only has it slowed it down, it has changed the order of the active stand by plugins putting active mailbox below calendar (which is plain stupid) also will not allow me to install any new programs it just hangs…
Anyone have any ideas?

Are you kidding about the E61 Firmware? I have to reboot my phone once a day on average and I constantly see an error saying that it could not contact the mail server so it’s going to stop checking, so I have to go back to settings to turn it back on…. Funny the iPhone doesn’t seem to suffer from this

According to: http://europe.nokia.com/A4577225
The E65 firmware has the following improvements:
Nokia E65 software version 2.0633.65.01 released - 15 November 2007
This version includes improvements in Browser, W-LAN and VOIP functionality and usability. The release also includes Bluetooth, messaging and calendar improvements as well as some new themes.
Since the E61i firmware update has the same exact version number, it’s possibly the same.
November 20th, 2007 at 6:24 am
Hello together.
I ran the update on my 61i and it seems to be a bit faster now.
Hopefully there are many features added but one I found already- the screen saver option now has 3 choices- 1 Date & Time, 2 Text and NEW- Callender… and it is a great thing to have. Now I’m looking for more new or changed things…..
November 20th, 2007 at 7:08 am
Just upgraded!!! And it comes with DOTS PINK and DOTS PLUM themes!!
November 20th, 2007 at 7:48 am
I did that! What’s new? The only obvious things are pink and plum themes + Activation Keys (to manage rights for usage of protected media files in the phone.
November 20th, 2007 at 9:41 am
Mine is the US non-carrier version and still has no upgrade :\
But my current FW version is different: 1.0633.86.02
November 20th, 2007 at 9:44 am
Mine is US version with FW 1.0633.86.02.
I changed to HKG product code 0542904 and I can update to 2.0633.65.01 without any problem.
November 20th, 2007 at 9:49 am
What’s this about no more firmware updates to the e61? Why would they not incrementally enhance the phone in line with their work on the e61i?
November 20th, 2007 at 10:27 am
Good post. I just updated and don’t really notice anything new. I don’t see this third screensaver option..
November 20th, 2007 at 11:13 am
Too Bad Nokia has stopped supporting the US version of the E70-2 RM-24; No firmware updates for MORE than a year now. I feel like I got SCREWED by buying the high end phone. Watch out in the future folks. Nokia will drop even high end phones. Nokia do us right, spend some of your volumes of cash to actually SUPPORT the products you sell. If you can update the Euro version, why not the US version ?
November 20th, 2007 at 11:52 am
Nice, I will try the product code change thing, I’ve already tryed with the EURO1 code but NSU can’t find the update, I belive it’s because the version already installed is different.
November 20th, 2007 at 11:54 am
Oh yeah, I forgot: my brazilian branded E62 has the predictive text option like this new FW but it also did nothing
November 20th, 2007 at 11:56 am
The “Week View Title” option only shows up when you have “Monday” as the start of the week. And the option only affects the Week View calendar. The Month View, as you’ve shown above, is not affected. The reason it’s different is because you have the left calendar start on Mondays, and the right calendar start on Sundays.
November 20th, 2007 at 12:34 pm
After upgrading here are the changes I saw:
- bluetooth stack is definitely upgraded. My built-in Nokia car kit can work with the phone without any echo. A very nice feature …
- 2 more themes - might be important
November 20th, 2007 at 12:45 pm
When I try to install the updated Software Updater, I keep on getting an error: Error 1720: There is a problem with this Windows Installer Package. A script required for this install to complete could not be run….. Any Ideas? Running WinXP Pro….
November 20th, 2007 at 2:08 pm
If you’re using Blackberry Connect, I recommend uninstalling BBC *before* the upgrade, then upgrade firmware, then upgrade BBC.
THIS WILL DELETE ANY MESSAGES ON THE DEVICE
But, I found that I couldn’t get the new BBC to register with the network until I had fully uninstalled it and reinstalled.
Might be anecdotal.
November 20th, 2007 at 5:50 pm
Has this update improved the volume control range when held to one’s ear?
cheers!
November 20th, 2007 at 6:20 pm
Hi all! After when I changed the firmware, my native language (Hungarian) lost my phone. Only English, Pilipino, Indonesia and Malaysia available in phone language menu. What happened? I want to get my older firmware!!! :-((((((
November 20th, 2007 at 9:48 pm
Does the mail button work for opening the mailbox now?
Thanks,
Antonis
November 20th, 2007 at 9:52 pm
Hey Ed, your keyboard layout seems exactly like mine though the firmware versions were different. What’s your product code?
November 20th, 2007 at 10:08 pm
@ Ricardo,
product code?
RM-227

@Antonis
Not sure if I understand the question but a click on your email button will take you to your default email inbox.

Thanks!

How do I get BBC 4.0 (7.45.0)? It’s no offered on the Nokia download page. Is it already included in the new firmware 2.0633.65.01?
November 21st, 2007 at 3:40 am
Is there any way to backup the E61i so that the data & programs can be restored exactly as before, following a firmware upgrade? I don’t just mean synchronizing contacts/calendar with a PC but a complete copy of every program and setting stored. I don’t see any menu options to do this, only to transfer data to another phone, which presumably doesn’t copy the actual programs or settings?
November 21st, 2007 at 4:34 am
any clue on how updating it on mac os x?
November 21st, 2007 at 5:40 am
@weisen : For which provider do you use BB Connect? I use T-Mobile instant e-mail but the new client by Nokia refuses to connect.
November 21st, 2007 at 6:37 am
Tony, you can use Nokia PC Suite (a free download from Nokia) to “almost” completely back up your phone and sd card. I say almost because it seems like some little things don’t always come back. They show up in the app manager but still need to be reinstalled. Nothing major, stuff like the weather program, golf game. Nothing I really need for the phone. The back-up takes a little time (20 minutes or so) depending on how much stuff you have on the card. After the update you can just restore the back-up to the phone. I also don’t see why you can’t just pull the card before the update to spend up the whole process. Come to thing of it the only stuff I have ever had to reinstall was on the card so maybe pulling the micro sd card is the way to go.
November 21st, 2007 at 6:39 am
@Tony
You can make a backup on your memorycard. Have a look at Menu->System->Memory->Options
November 21st, 2007 at 7:16 am
God luck to you all early adopters. I will wait for some months before installing it to get more testimonies.
November 21st, 2007 at 8:09 am
Luca, you can’t ugrade Nokia firmware on OS X.
A possible way is if you have an intel mac to use boot camp and windows.
November 21st, 2007 at 8:58 am
I installed the update and i find that when I use GPS (tom tom navigator 6.02) it seems slower to update on the screen than with the old firmware.
Anyone know if it is possible to downgrade firmware versions? i should have thought at it more before jumping in and just updating….
November 21st, 2007 at 9:33 am
ted - no way at all to go back to old firmware. Maybe Nokia support could do it but not any of us.
November 21st, 2007 at 12:22 pm
oh well - i’ve played around more with the new firmware and other than my tomtom issues - it does seem snappier.
everything else is good.. just wish my tomtom wasn’t so slow to react now
November 21st, 2007 at 3:54 pm
Indeed, I installed the new firmware : the phone is much more faster.
How can I disable the annoying missed call and sms notification in the form of a big tab on the screen ? On previous firmware it was a row in the menu, no more.
November 21st, 2007 at 4:01 pm
Previous problem with notification solved.

I have a Nokia E61i Titanium Black and its got the old firmware, yet when i go to profiles and click options, it does indeed show personalize and not customise, it think you got that wrong
November 22nd, 2007 at 4:55 am
One thing I noticed.. When shutting off, the blue Nokia label now ‘dissolves’ into horizontal lines and disappears! But this is only a cosmetic change.
about the calendar on top of the mailbox - It is the same even without mail for exchange installed.
Also found a T9 input setting - but what is it for?
November 22nd, 2007 at 5:37 am
the new firmware works really well for me (faster & snappier, i appreciate the new “features”), except for one problem… i noticed that the browser seems to have some RAM management issues (like in the old N80 days)… he crashed on me at least 10 times since the update (16 hours ago… ^^) anyone else experiencing this?

November 22nd, 2007 at 8:19 am
Some changes I noted:
1. When powering off, the blue ‘Nokia’ logo dissolves out as horizontal lines - animation.
2. predictive test - but how to use it?
3. Calendar week number view
4. Character encoding settings for SMS (not sure)
5. Service message can be downloaded manually or automatically. (not sure)
6. Phone Book: contacts can be copied to/from memory card. (not sure)
7. Bluetooth: Remote SIM mode setting added. (not sure)
8. Quick Office Viewer versions have changed? (not sure)
Somebody pls check these with old firmware and confirm.
November 22nd, 2007 at 8:32 am
ugh - I can’t install it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why???????
November 22nd, 2007 at 8:42 am
What does it mean if my product will not have an update - while others have. Will it have a problem when I install it???? I have product code 0545667.
November 22nd, 2007 at 8:45 am
still no TTLS-PAP authentication, anyone wnat to buy an E61i - it is of no use to me
November 22nd, 2007 at 8:53 am
I have installed it after changing my product code to the following:
RM-227 EURO A = 0538563
This gives me languages “English” and “Nederlands” and the correct keyboard layout for the standard english keyboard (incl all symbols)
November 22nd, 2007 at 9:50 am
lune:
You might have problems if you force it. Maybe the version with your languages aren’t ready yet. I suggest to just be patient about it. I’ve installed it and have noticed nothing really new and worthwhile. It is faster though. But other than that, nothing new really.
I dunno why, but it feels as though this was really an update for the E65, but that they released it for the E61i anyway since it was generally compatible. Reason is the “Predictive text” option being in the E61i’s settings. Enable it and nothing happens… seems it was specifically made for a keypad device rather than a full keyboard device such as the E61i.
November 22nd, 2007 at 10:05 am
@Angelo : I might be interested if it’s not flashed. I can’t get my T-Mobiel instant e-mail to work with the new BB Connect 4.0 software (yes, even with the T-Mobiel files form Nokia bizz soft). The new firmware doesn’t accept the old BB Connect software and T-Mobile Instant E-mail won’t connect ot the new software. So I’m in a Catch-22 sitautaion and an unflashed E61i sounds very interesting to me.
November 22nd, 2007 at 11:02 am
Hi all,
Just updated and have some questions:
1. Calander is now on top of the list on front page. How can I make Mail for exchange go on top?
2. I have some apps in the App manager folder. They won´t install due to “Expired certificate” but I cannot remove them When I start the phone it begins to install something but it hangs. Any ideas on this?
November 22nd, 2007 at 11:21 am
I do agree, just lost time updating and reinstalling it.
The device is indeed a very little faster.
Now the MailForExchange is sitting on a different place on the mainscreen. Strange.

Hi all,
Own key and Calendar key do not work. Nothing happens when I press them after the firmware update. Anyone else having problems?
November 22nd, 2007 at 3:55 pm
Ignore last remark, battery out and fired up. It works.
November 23rd, 2007 at 3:31 am
Well, first, not updating E61 is a cheat. Second, even a new device and the newest update is not addressing some very basic issues, I understand: voice recorder limitation to 1 minute (!), “shortcuts” needing the use of the blue key, hence a need for two fingers (WTF, Nokia?), text in contacts showing the titles in larger font than the information (the word phone number appears larger than the number itself. this is fixed in the new upcoming E51, btw), and we could go on. E61(i) is still the best phone/pda on the planet, but why oh why these annoyances?
November 23rd, 2007 at 1:37 pm
I noticed something with the update on my E61i -
I can’t watch youtube videos anymore!
on the old firmware - i went to the mobile youtube site and picked a video and it worked.
now, when i click on a video - real player kicks on and always gives me a connection error

Still only a nokia firmware updater than runs under windows.
When can we see a linux updater ? With all those VOIP/ asterisk connected E61, E61i phones I would of guessed that Nokia would bring out an updater than runs under Linux.

Finished updating my firmware from 1.0633.22.05 to 2.0633.65.01 - and I just have a question…
How can I remove themes previously installed in my old firmware? I know themes can be removed from the application manager, but after updating to the new firmware all my themes disappeared from the installed apps list. Any idea how to do this?
November 25th, 2007 at 9:45 am
I think the phone is even slower than before and I’ve had many many problems with installing and uninstalling applications (e.g. maps). I would re-install the old firmware if I could.
November 25th, 2007 at 9:02 pm
Hi! i installed the new firmware and everything seems to be workin’ fine but FRING. does any of you uses fring. i installed fring with the new firmware and it crashes when i try to start it. this is killing me because i’m a constant fring user. any idea on this? tks
November 26th, 2007 at 1:14 am
I did the update a few days ago. I did a backup before but after installing the backup some apps disappeared, some apps did not work, and the battery drain was gigantic (it was empty after 8 hours). I had to remove and re-install all apps, and to format the memory card to make it work. Now, everything is fine again. Using the backup functionality after a firmware update seems to be a bad idea because there are too many changes in the operating system (and its files).
November 26th, 2007 at 3:27 am
Mikes73 said: ‘the screen saver option now has 3 choices- 1 Date & Time, 2 Text and NEW- Callender… and it is a great thing to have’ - however, i can’t find the new option. I still have only 1 and 2.
MOREOVER: I’ve encountered a problem with Quickoffice. When I edit some Excelspreadsheets on my phone or create some new ones, the changes stay on the phone. i have no possibility anymore to transfer the files to my PC. I simply don’t see the changed/new versions in the Explorer.
Any solutions?
Cheers, Tom

Thanks for the help, Keatisk & CheckB. I tried the Nokia Content Copier backup before but gave up, as it got stuck on the ‘phone-specific’ part of the backup and had still not finished after 1 hour! I have now tried the SD card method. Incidentally, there is no ’system’ folder on my phone, so it’s Menu>Tools>Memory Card>Options on my E61i.

November 26th, 2007 at 9:16 am
Question to all owners of non-English versions of E61(i)’s firmware.
How do you switch between languages while entering text? Well, I know about Shift+Chr but this key combination is often difficult to apply (”Select symbol” window appears instead.)
Particularly it is driving me mad in a hurry of entering lock code (if I switched earlier to non-English…)
NOKIA, is it so difficult to add one missing menu item like “Change Language” to all text-related fields? Remember about usability!!!
November 26th, 2007 at 12:29 pm
I have a US phone and it didn’t recognize that there was a v 2 firware upgrade available. So, I changed the product code to this: RM-227 EURO A = 0538563 and it installed perfectly. Except that my keyboard now doesn’t map to the right keyboard anymore. The “$”, “&”, “(”… kinds of keys are mapped differently than on my device. grrr. Oh well. At least the apostrophe is in a more convenient spot and no longer requires a function key to type it…
November 27th, 2007 at 2:48 am
Hello,
after the update i can not install any new themes, just the originals dots. Some free software also are not available. Do you have any answer about that. i think is because the License Manager insatlled inside the phone memory.
November 27th, 2007 at 8:42 am
Yes, I too upgrades my product code - 0541667, changed it to 0541670, upgraded successfully, but my keyboard maps are wrong.
Any thoughts on how to get the US keyboard layout back?
November 27th, 2007 at 10:46 am
Re did the firmware with product code 0538563 and it worked.
And btw, Bluetooth now works with my BMW e90…… Which is what i was really going for.
November 27th, 2007 at 10:48 am
Ugh, I meant to say, that product code kept the correct keyboard mappings for US Englush.
November 27th, 2007 at 10:57 am
Thanks Jess! I will try the product code 0538563!
November 28th, 2007 at 12:21 pm
I just installed the update and found nothing bad. Just a question: why shall I choose the language in writing messages with a qwerty keybod? Does it really work? On my phone I don’t get any difference having it.
Besides that the new themes lack of Batter and Network bars: they are definitelly awful compared to the original Dots or Nokia ones.
Vinx.

Hello, I’m from Venezuela and I was trying update my E61i but still when I can update the Software Firmware and PC Suite, I can’t find the new firmware.
My E61i is unlocked, ’cause it went buyed in USA. Could be that the fact that I can’t use the new firmware?

November 30th, 2007 at 11:08 am
So, if you have an E61, as I have, I can’t upgrade the firmware?? Pretty stupid if you ask me.
While I am generally happy with the E61, the most annoying bug that I’d like to see fixed is the fact that the e-mail automatic connection switching just doesn’t work. (This is ironic given that the phone was originally marketed as a business smartphone centered around its ‘excellent e-mail capabilities’.) I am constantly having to re-enable automatic retrieval because when the signal strength goes low, it disconnects but does not re-attempt to connect to another Access Point in the Access Point Group. What’s more, the connection that failed remains noted in the ‘Access Point In Use’ setting and the fact that I chose to connect using an Access Point Group is completely forgotten by the e-mail settings. Also the automatic retrieval is disabled without you having any say in it! This behavior just sours my whole E61 experience. I have though about installing Blackberry Connect but T-Mobile would require me to pay $30 a month for that, in addition to the $30 I already pay for unlimited internet access. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I just upgraded the firmware on my e61i, then used nokia restore to try and get all me data back. Even though the data copying finishes - it’s all lost - I can’t see any of my calendar entries, contacts, applications, anything! Grrr. I guess I might be going back to the old firmware so I can get my data back

So, after the firmware upgrade, does E61i support A2DP profile? Is it possible? Will it also provide voice recording > 1 min?
I hope it continues to let us edit the office documents……

Yes, Fring is broken with the new Firmware. I’ve verified with my own e61i and another e61i user.

have you found a way to fix it? let me know if you do.

Since the firmware upgrade, the “new email” sound doesn’t work anymore. When a new email has arrived, the led flashes, but there is no sound. I’ve installed the sound “email 1.aac” in the default (and active) profile. Does anyone has an idea how to solve this?
December 3rd, 2007 at 5:17 am
Hi,
for me fring is still working flawlessly…
Have you tried to remove and reinstall it?
Moreover, a new updated and improved version is available
for download.
Check it out.

after updating the e61i i realised that in-device search becomes very slow on searching contacts? any body else having this problem?
December 3rd, 2007 at 9:31 am
Could somebody verify if one can now add a 4 number smtp port, like 2525 in the mail setup? In the original firmware, the OK button became greyed-out when typing the 4th number, so one could not use 2525 as port. Very painful as my company uses that for the alternative mail server.
Cheers, Fons.

Hi

December 4th, 2007 at 3:22 pm
Thanks for this post! I took the plunge over the weekend, and so far have encountered only one problem…
I had been using iSkoot with great success for VoIP calls (fring never worked on my E61i for some reason) but I can’t log in to my Skype account with their latest software and this latest firmware.
I’ve a message in at the iSkoot forums:

Wondering if anyone else is having this same issue?

I have a comment/suggestion for Chris J. and a question for those who have installed the update and had a chance to test IMAP IDLE.
* CHRIS, I have several e-mail addresses and all offer IMAP support, so I thought the E61 was the perfect device for me, because the native client offered IDLE support. Little did I know that you can only “idle” 2 accounts at the same time and that I’d have all these disconnects, disabling of the idle and, what’s worse, when the client is in that “semi-connected” status and I try to open a message that hasn’t been downloaded, it says “Retrieving message” for like a whole minute and then there’s something that looks like a soft reboot, but not really. The desktop goes blank and then the standby screen plugins start coming on one by one, just like when you do a manual reboot. However, the Messaging application is no longer available. Whenever you try to open it, it goes back to the standby screeen. And I have to turn the phone off and then back on. This is very annoying. Now, I recently got my E61i as well, have had the same setup for a month and I have only had this happen a couple of times since. What I am hoping is that this new firmware fixes this once and for all. I am seriously hoping that’s what “Email connection closing/disconnecting improved” in the official upgrade changelog refers to, which brings me to my second point
* THOSE OF YOU WHO’VE ALREADY UPGRADED AND USE IMAP IDLE. Did you have the problems I describe above in the previous firmware and has this new firmware taken care of them? This would really be the only reason for me to upgrade, based on what everybody else is claiming this firmware does (or doesn’t).
Thanks, all.

Hi there !
I updated my E61i without problem. I backuped/restored without problems and got my Access points, preference and such back.
Fring is still working but as usual, all the applications installed on the cards have been lost and I had to reformat the cards and reinstall.
I use a Holux M1200 Bluetooth GPS and with the new firmware it is now working a bit with the Nokia apps (sporttracker) or Gmaps 2.0. A bit because I have to turn off and on many times before I can make it work, turn BT off to have turned on by the app and such. Far far from perfect while it works and was already working well with Java based GPS apps (such as 3D tracker or even TomTom).
Any advice, experience with external BT GPS?
Tom

Do not upgrade firmware untill nokia say something about whatsNEW they offring in this new firmware.I’ve noticed no improvment in browsing but all my installed apps are gone and when i restoered my bacup none of them works i.e.gmaps,irctc,mkts on mobile and some game… I’ve to reinstalled all apps
December 5th, 2007 at 8:50 am
Can anyone report on the quality of the photos taken after the upgrade in comparison with before? In my experience with the original firmware, photos look much better when taken in 640×480 format than in 1600×1200 format. I talk about it with examples here: http://feedingthefad.blogspot.com/2007/12/e61i-camera-quality.html (more to come). I am hoping this firmware addresses this problem.

Not sure where to post it… Have you seen that recently Google and SAP released their apps for iPhone? They all claim many flaws in it (even unable to Activesync contacts, calendar and email with Exchange) but it’s just a beginning… NOKIA, don’t duck out this opportunity to port SAP, Oracle and Google apps on Symbian immediately!!! I wander if Nokia insiders look through this…
December 8th, 2007 at 7:06 am
Andrei, Nokia made similar announcements when launching Open C so that POSIX C applications could be easily ported and I believe Oracle was in the presentation as one of the “parteners” so we sould expect something like that soon.
Of course it’s a bit easier to do that in the iPhone since it’s already much more POSIX-friendly than any Symbian device due it’s unix-like nature.

Oh and firmware 2 is available now for the 0541667 (several unbranded US models) Product Code

Dexter Ang, thank you so much for taking the time. Please go back to my blog and read my response. Thanks again.
December 8th, 2007 at 7:28 pm
I just got the unbranded US update as well. List of what I’ve noticed is or isn’t there, compared to the post:
Predictive Text — Yes, could not make it work
Calendar: Week View Title — No
Calendar: Week Number — No
Standby — Yes, Gmail IMAP, using default mail program
Terminology — No
Themes: Dots Plum, Dots Pink — Yes
Still very disappointed that they have not given us an alarm clock scheduler, that my ancient 6230i has!

Two issues I have noticed:
- Lag when taking pictures. Picture you think you took (not necessarily what is shown on the screen at the time), is actually slightly delayed image when viewed thru the gallery! To test I show my hand and take a picture with 5 fingers extended then each second fold down a finger. Picture snaps at five, but saved at 4.5 fingers)
- Voice recorder can not be used to record a portion of phone call. I definitely did this with my e61
December 10th, 2007 at 9:20 pm
Things that I have noticed so far apart what has been mentioned above-
- A little quicker perhaps, not sure though
- A “back” button on my safari browser (right soft key) I never really knew why I had to push fcn and 3 to go back with old version.
-new BB connect version installed and works, and it opens jpg files which previously it never could.
-perhaps a slight change in ear-piece timber, not volume though.
If I note anything else I let you know

Stuck with 2.0633.65.51 with a wrong keyboard layout (my handset has a AZERTY layout and the firmware i uploaded is in QWERTY), i’ve tried several times to change product code then updater with NSU, but NSU (1.4) says me that i’ve the latest version and doesn’t propose to reinstall. Any idea on a way to override (please help !! i’m looking for 3 days …)

I’ve already installed new firmware. I kept face a lot of trouble while access gmail imap. Often showing up system error (-2), kern panic, app closed, etc.. Does anyone here would like to share about? I live in indonesia. I used e61i for about a month.
Thanks a lot. Best regards.

Blinking heck life is too complex I use an e61 and keep my e61i in abox so it does not get scratched, also I dont have to worry about all this firmware malarkie.
The answer must be a simple telephone (bakalite is best) and an eee pc with 10 inch screen.
December 13th, 2007 at 9:56 am
Anyone have a Mac version of the firmware update? or can I at least download the new version directly to my e61i? I ain’t ’bout no Windows.
December 13th, 2007 at 11:03 pm
I’m afraid of applying the update, too many bugs that I’m reading. Its just like these Nokia folks just got the update from another Eseries, fondled with it, and maliciously made it available as an update for the E61i.
Since the E61i is the “king of the crop” Eseries. They should’ve at least add AD2P, better elegant themes since businessmen should be professional looking with there hi-tech devices, full anti-aliased fonts and other stability issues.
Heres hoping for the next update…
December 13th, 2007 at 11:07 pm
Is it me or those themes are for chicks?? They should’ve made elegant black themes for us machos, too.
December 14th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
This update seemed to be for E61i with specific product codes only. It doesn’t seem to update mine in NSU. Keeps on telling that my mobile is already up to date. Some of the changes indicated above is already in my last firmware version.
However, if your firmware won’t update to the latest 2.xx, just stay out of it to avoid random glitches and problems. Just a friendly suggestion.
December 15th, 2007 at 5:29 pm
David P, I had the same camera shutter lag in the original firmware before upgrading. This and the photo quality in general were some of my few disappointments with the E61i. Any Nokia out there takes better pictures.
December 16th, 2007 at 9:27 am
I upgraded my Firmware on my E61i, and then when I restored my Data and Settings from my PC, it says unable to store on Memory Card. Can anyone advise how I can access back my stored messages. This is totally unexpected.
December 19th, 2007 at 2:15 pm
Hi, I have been trying for quite a bit to upgrade mine (bought from the Nokia UK shop) but for my product ID code there seem to be no upgrades! 1.xxx is still the only one available, any idea why ?
December 19th, 2007 at 11:16 pm
After reading all the comments I took the plunge and updated the firmware and also the Blackberry client the latest version. So far my feedback is positive phone seems to run faster and BB can sync contacts over the air now. word of caution: from my previous experience with teh e61 do not backup and then try to restore it almost will not work completely and will miss portions. be ready to reinstall all your apps, contacts, calender from scratch. cheers
December 19th, 2007 at 11:19 pm
Alberto you need to change your product code which can be found under your battery to a different number you will find some numbers listed above on this page from other using something like NSS. then you can upgrade the firmware. word of caution though you will void your warranty if you do that. I did that with my e61 with no regrets but you need to know.

I have tried to use the Nokia software updater to update my e61i, but it keeps on saying that there is no update available,
My version is:
1.0633.22.09
16-05-07
RM-227
Nokia E61i-1
Phone code is: 0553433
What can I do to update it??
December 23rd, 2007 at 9:09 am
Ibrahim, have you updated you nokia software updater and nokia pc suite?
hi all,
my problem with the new firmware is that the connection (wifi or 3g/gprs) never automatically disconnect after several minutes of no internet activity. so, this keeps my battery drain faster.
previously the network will auto disconnect. any hints?
December 25th, 2007 at 2:18 pm
Agam, yup i have the latest ver of both the pc sute and NSU ?
still cant update i tryed to reset the phone and tryed again,

I did an upgrade and so far (30mins ago) it seems ok.
I was half way upgrading the phone when I come across this forum..so there is no way to cancel. Was reading this forum, some upgraded with success, some with problem and got me worried.
I did this upgrade hoping it will solve my sms issue.. it sends sms, but can’t receive. Im using this phone since June with no problem, then last week or so, I notice the sms delivery report did not show up.. and later come to realize that im not receiving most sms.. receiving 1 out of maybe 20 or so.. and after constant turning off/on. Towards the last few days, Im not receiving any sms at all and have to use my old phone to retrieve them.
Just today, I found that the sms issue is a known problem :
http://discussions.nokia.co.uk/discussions/board/message?board.id=communicators&message.id=5023
http://groups.google.com.my/group/alt.cellular.nokia/browse_thread/thread/402d587fbf3c843b/5bfa0591d3db93d7%235bfa0591d3db93d7
Well.. yes, immediately after the upgrade, I can receive sms with no delay.. delivery report shows up again. Just like brand new.
Also noticed, the search on contact is very much slower.. but I guess Im still happy that sms is fixed, hopefully for good.
I read somewhere above that the contact cannot be restored.. I did not face that luckily.. I did a backup on the mem card, and restore it later.. contact and calendar is good. I do not however, have any extra application installed.
Did any of you encounter the sms issue before (can send, but not receive) ?

Mine was a successful upgrade although i forgot to backup my contacts. The reason was because I panic’d earlier when i was preparing for the upgrade.
Prior to upgrade, I swapped the sim on the phone with a non-active sim (so that no calls will come in when i do the upgrade). But hurrah the phone asked for my lock code! (it was no longer the default 12345 and all i can think of was oh god! i’m gonna lose my e61i over the holidays).
A couple of reboots and phone came back ok. I went on upgrading hoping that the lock code would be deleted as well. Went on to the download link, USB’d the phone to the PC (Dell Latitude on Vista Ultimate), and about 10 mins, its done. Not an issue. And i was given the option to set a new lock code… (wrote the code down this time :)).
Luckily i have a backup Nokia 9500 which has most of my older contacts.
Phone now is:
2.0633.65.51
03-10-07
RM-227
Nokia E61i-1
Couple of observations:
(1) Themes that i stored on my memory card were still there after the reboot.
(2) The phone is faster now.
(3) MSG has this one line option (can’t recall if the older firmware has that option). Also SMS i saved on my memory card are still available after i reset the option of storing of SMS from phone to MC.
(4) Me thinks Converter is a new app.
Last note: i also got a Martin Fields (www.martinfields.com) for the LCD (time to take out the original plastic cover) and its really clear and neat.
Hope this helps.

Has anyone encountered an issue whereby when one forwards an email (using E61i and BB Connect), the forwarded content shows up when typing the forward, but it is somehow snipped during the send process and not received by the recepient?
Any indicators welcome.

I already do the upgrade 1 months ago, i hate this new firmware, i felt this new firmware slow down my NOkia E61i, last version is more faster, example if i go to contacts, and tick some name, old version, have less time to search, but new version, need more times, i hate this. now my current contacts is nearly 2000. any idea how to downgrade to old version. thanks.
January 21st, 2008 at 8:47 pm
I found that the new firmware comes with Chajie Chinese Input Method, however it shows in the setting menu but can not turn it on. (I am using Hong Kong version)

I have update my Nokia e61i. As written above I have followed very carefull the instructions. First I had to make a backup, which I did succesfully. After this I could update the Nokia e61i, which also succesfully suceeded. But when I finished with putting the backup, back on my phone all my contact, messages and almost all settings + downloads are gone.
Can anybody tell me what I am doing wrong, or is it really all gone??
February 7th, 2008 at 9:10 am
Hi all, I have a question here m aybe someone can help …
I bought a new E61i off ebay from a seller in Germany.
The phone has a QWERTZ keyboard BUT the code is 0543953 EuroK1 (RU) Mocha / Silver.
It has only 3 languages: English, Russian and some other language with cyrillic characters.
Anyways, I have reinstalled the software with the Nokia Software updater and now when I select English both for language and writing language, the QWERTZ keyboard behaves like a QWERTY one … meaning that if I write a text message and push the Z key, it types Y instead of Z.
Did I lose the so called “key bindings” ? How can I fix that so the QWERTZ keyboard functions again properly ?
Thanks

i cannot connect to my wireless internet with my E61i. i am using a d-link g router, is this the problem? i get a gateway not found response. I need some help.
February 26th, 2008 at 3:47 am
I’d like to say that I love her a lot (Beatles on flip side of Let it Be)…
My E61i has now finally been functioning properly with the 2.0633.65.01 firmware - after 2 attempts to use NSU and one ‘proper’ upgrade at an authorized service point.
But then it suddenly starts slowing down (not due to open programs) and really messing me about. Even when all that’s running is the F-secure firewall.
I have Maps, Podcasting and Internet Radio installed, but all on the SD card, so they shouldn’t be a problem - should they?
I reboot every day or so and even rebooting several times when the phone plays up doesn’t speed it up.
Ideas anybody?

After upgrading Firmware, it will not allow me to reload Psiloc Font Magnifier software which is a software recommended by Nokia for E61i. I get this “please reload software”, tried it several times and still a problem. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

update my e61i to 2.0633.65.01 from older version that I forgot, whatever it was 1 year ago.
03-10-07
rm-227
nokia e61i-a
my version is make in finland UK version
everything works fine.
especially mailforexchagne works much better. mailforexchagne version 2.3.0
people who has problem is probably because they get the UK (made in finland) version but were flash to HK version so baiscally a UK/EU brand with a HK OS version that is running into trouble.
if anyone who did flash a EU brand (made in finland) to a HK OS please share it with me. I can be reach at joe_li26@yahoo.com
This is the none sense part of Nokia, different version of lanugage on different phone. what the F is that, should just be an option or add on for perfer language. OR ELSE DON’t call it a world phone.
March 5th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
in reply to Chris J.
create your own xyz connection and in it include 1st your most perfer internet access point. basically a list of it. then you set the maiforexchange to use that “connection” which is a list of connections.
for me I don’t care since AT&T covers me all internet useage…. but other wise i do that.

March 21st, 2008 at 12:01 pm
swtich between loudspeaker and headset during a call had always work.
but now since I downloaded the HK version of the firmware thinking that it will give me chinese support but it didn’t also, now I am getting that stupid installing every time I reboot my phone. it does reboot at least 10 times and try to install. it also said it installation from memory card can’t not be compleyted… any advice. I did remember I put an .sis file in the memory card but failed install even manually. not sure if that is the app that is causing it. but back when i use the US version (download from US site) did have this issue.
