Problems Installing Applications on the Nokia E61

Quite a few readers have contacted me regarding problems installing applications on their Nokia E61. When installing <insert application name here> they get the following error message “Certificate Error contact the application supplier”. I have previously written about this in the comments section and in the FAQ but it is probably good to highlight it again.

For added protection against “malware” there is rather strict application signing procedure implemented for S60 3rd edition. The device comes with the standard setting to check for proper signatures and will not install applications unless they are correctly signed. Although the intention behind mandatory application signing is good it locks out applications that for some reason are not signed and approved. To accept all applications and solve this issue:Go to Tools > App. mgr > Options > Settings Change “software installation” from “Signed Only” to “All” and “Onlline certic check” to “off”. This will most likely solve your problem regarding installing unsigned application. However, please be aware that you turned off one extra layer of security for the device. Your IT department might not approve of this. I normally don't worry too much about malware or viruses but it is a good role of thumb to only download and install applications from known sources.

Update: I've created a separate post for how to solve the "Certificate Error" on the Nokia E62.

Just a small additional note: Actually you don’t really need to worry about unsigned applications in Symbian OS 9.x (also in S60 3rd Edition). The reason is because unsigned applications cannot do “nasty” things. For example, killing other processes, modify sensitive system data, etc.

Symbian 9.x has been designed such that all applications that want to access low-level stuff must be signed.

There is also another concept they call “single-shot permission”. For example, unsigned applications can try to make a phone call or send SMS, but the users will be notified. If the users doesn’t allow the application to make a phone call or send SMS, the operating system will not grant the access.

However, it’s also better to have prevention before something happens. Who knows that there is hackers out there who can circumvent it.

Thanks for all the great how to-s.
I know this is not a forum for help but anyone know who to get rid of voicemail icon in the notification area? I don’t have any voicemail but it won’t go away. It’s been like that since the day I got E61.

  4. admin Says:

    Hi Aureate,
That is strange. I haven’t heard about a similar problem. Have you tried to turning off the device, removing the battery and then starting it up again? Does it still show up?
It should clear out the notification message.

  5. Franco Says:

I thought its just the software is not compatible witht he device. I also noticed that older Symbian S60 software wont work on E61

  6. admin Says:

Well, that could be the case if you try to install previous versions of S60 applications on the E61. However, if you are having problems, as described above, when using S60 3rd edition application then it is most likely solved with the solution about.

  7. Antony Pranata Says:

Older S60 software may still work if they are Java-based application (.jar/.jad).
All native applications (.sis) from the older software will not work at all.

Thanks again for clarifying and participating Antony.

    pls can somebody help.
when i remove Nokia E61 64 Mb memory card from phone i loose ability to open PDF document as ACROBAT READER ONLY memory card. So if i in put my extra 512 Mem card in I cannot open any document. how can i transfer Adobe Acrobat to th phone so i can operate when either card is inserted

  10. admin Says:

    Wayne,
You could just install the Acrobat Reader on your Mini SD card. Acrobat Reader is a free download. Look under the software section and there is a link.

  11. wayne Says:

sorry i dont understand, i need to use my 516 memorycard, and there is know way can i transfer the adobe programme from 64 mem card toeither the fone or the 516 mem card. so it is just a waist basically, now i cannot open pdf files on my E61 with the 516 mem card inserted.

  12. wayne Says:

i dont think, i make my self clear, Adobe acrobate is already on the mini disc. but when you remove this from the fone to use a larger mem card ie 516 mem card, it does not leave the adobe programme on the phone, and knowway can i transfer the adobe programme on the mni disc to the phone it just wont happen.

    thx

  13. admin Says:

    Hi Wayne,
Why don’t you install the program on the phone instead of on the SD card. Just download the application and when you are asked where to install the application you choose Phone (internal memory) instead of external SD card. The application is a free download.
    Cheers

  15. Lee Says:

When i replace the original 64 mb mini sd with a bigger one, my english to chinese dictionary stop working….it says “Dictionary word information missing. Install work database”. Unlike the acrobat reader, i can reinstall this software, because it seems to come with the phone. There is no way to uninstall it also. I tried doing a factory reset using the new memory card but it was no good too. I have tried to using a card reader from my pc to do a copy from the old memory card to the new one, however it seem that some parts of the memory can’t be copied. I always got an error saying some parts of the memory can’t be copied…i think it has to be due to some security featuers of symbian 9.1. Please help….i hate to bring back to nokia care center….it will mean some days without my handphone.

  16. Stefan Says:

I had this problem when installing an application but when I tried to change the software installation to All it won’t let me do it. It goes back to Signed Only. Is this a bug or there is something else that is blocking the change?
    Software version installed is 1.0610.04.04 19-04-06 RM89.

  17. admin Says:

    Hi Stefan,
I have never heard of this problem before. Are you sure you are trying to set it to “All”. I am asking because I find that the way you switch from two options sometimes is hard to choose and get right. I think the way is counterintuitive. Anyway, if you try it again and you are sure you doing the right thing but it still won’t switch I would consider a Hard Reset to clean up the device. It will delete all data so think about whether you want to try it or not.

  18. Stefan Says:

After a hardware reset I was able to choose “All”. Can’t say for sure if this solved the problem or it was just stupid me stuck in the weird combo box switch. Thanks a lot for the help and for the great site !

  19. admin Says:

Glad it worked Stefan. I have found that a hard reset can fix a variety of issues. It’s a pain to perform a hard reset but can be worth it.
    Cheers

  21. Token141 Says:

As I do not have a card reader on my laptop, how do I transfer the dictionary database from the 64MB card to a new card? I’ve the same problem as Lee above. I’ve no problem reinstalling the rest of the applications but there is no dictionary application at the Nokia website.

  22. Lo Says:

I have an E60, hope that counts.
I installed all my applications on the memory card and after i turned my phone off and then on again, the applications are still there but they won’t open or work unless i override the existing application. does anybody know why this is happening? i thot it was ok to intall stuff on the memory card…

  23. Junior Says:

I have e61 and i cannot figure out how to get PDF files copied to it.Need help!

  24. admin Says:

    Hi Junior,
One easy but manual way of coping any files to any location on your device is to connect it to your PC and use PC suite - use the phone browser and you can move files to and from your PC and your Nokia E61.
    Hope that helps

  25. Junior Says:

I have tried doing that but the PC Suite will not pick up the PDF format file, probably there is a way to do it that the file will be recognized by PC Suite ?

  26. Gerald Says:

Lee, that is strange. I encountered the same problem as you when I used a larger memory card, but I was able to do as you describe (copy all files from the supplied 64MB card to my PC via card reader, and then copy to a larger memory card) and my English->Chinese dictionary now works without problem. Perhaps there is a problem with your card reader or memory card? By the way, the files for the dictionary appear to reside in the “PRIVATE” directory on the memory card.

By the way, I am using an E70 but that shouldn’t make a difference.

  27. Joydeep Says:

Hi. I am from India and use Blacberry connect on my E61. Please tell me how to email/send attachments of office files made on my E61 from Blackberry . Looking forward to hear from you.

  28. Marco Says:

Talk about PDF. I just installed acrobat. And it’s strange, one of the file, I did not know where did I save or I didn’t save at all? But it appears in my “recent documents” field, and how do I delete it?

  29. Token141 Says:

Solved my dictionary problem. As I’m using a Mac, initially I tried browsing the card via Mac bluetooth file exchange but could not see the private folder. So I bought a USB SD card reader. Plugging it with the card directly to my laptop, I could see the sub-folder 101f9cfe under the private folder of the 64MB card. Copied it to the new card and the dictionary works fine now.

I am unable to view Office 2003 documents on the E61. All you can see are the ‘funny’ characters when you open up a Doc, xls or ppt file. Is there any fixes for E61 which needs to be installed in order to open these documents? Thanks.

  36. shackk Says:

Have you downloaded Pocket Office to your phone yet? You can do this free in the catalog menu. You must download that in order to view certain file types from what I understand. There is also a separate .pdf Adobe reader as well to download, also free of charge

  37. Steven Goh Says:

    Hi Shackk,
Thanks for the tip. Yes, I did download Quickoffice & Adobe Reader and installed them successfully. Whilst Adobe LE 1.5.0 works like a charm, Quickoffice wasn’t able to read an Office 2003 document as it is.
The following clause in written in the Help section though ie. ‘Not all file formats or features are supported’. Guess there is no application YET for E61 which can view Office 2003 documents without issues. Thanks again.

  38. shackk Says:

no problem, hopefully there will be support for all soon.

how do I install that one?!

  44. admin Says:

    Aga,
The problem might be that you have the date set incorrectly on your device. Double check that the date correct. That will fix the problem. Pay attention to year/month etc.

I just made a hard reset on my Nokia E61 smartphone and installed the “Mail for Exchange” software again (through the Nokia PC Suite), configured my Profile but I am not receiving any information.

Do I need to install something else on my Smartphone or on my computer? Do I need to configure something on my Exchange Server?

I also have a doubt when configuring the Profile. All required data are from The Exchange server name I used on my company?

Please help, I have been working on that over a week.

  46. admin Says:

    Hi Jesus,
In order to use Mail For Exchange you must run Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 SP2.
Have you confirmed that your company is using Ex 2003 SP2?
If so you need your server address, domain (which is NOT the same as the URL domain) and your password. It is really easy. I think the problem is that your company is not running the correct version of Exchange or that you use the wrong domain.
    Cheers
    Ed

  47. Jesus Says:

Thanks Ed, I have cheched and we have Ex 2003 SP1.

IBut after they install SP2, my Exchange Server configuration will be the IP addres, right? Do we need another configuration on the Server?

After I complete this, will I be able to receive the information (mail, contacts and appointments) over the air?

    Regards
    Jesus

This is a response to “aureate” (July 13, 2006 at 15h37) and the issue with the voicemail icon. You can call your service provider customer service (if they are clueless try the technical support). This happens occassionally to me (I am with Rogers in Canada). If it voicemail icon does not disappear after a day I call customer service and they reset something, then it’s gone in a few minutes. Hope this helps.

    hi,

i don’t know when it started (i suspect after the firmare upgrade), but i got “something” on my external card, that my e60 is trying to install when i insert the card or remove the usb cable. it then says something along the lines, that there is an unsigned application on the card which cannot be installed automatically and i should do it by hand - but i don’t know what. - i have some strangely named packages in the package installer which i cannot delete nor install though.

  56. Shamai Says:

    Hi,

I have purchased the E61 yesterday. Installed “Mail for Exchange”, configured it to synchronize with my organization Exchange Server and it worked great (downloaded emails, and I was also able to send an email).
After an hour or so, it has stopped, and since then I’m unable to connect to the server, the current state is “Connecting” and never “Connected” I have no idea why I’m unable to connect to the server, which is very frustrating, because I know it already worked for me once. I’ve already unistalled the “Mail for Exchange” and reinstalled it, but still it’s not able to connect. I know it recognizes the server, because if I provide incorrect server name it says so.
Anybody knows what can I do?
    thanks.

I have the same mail for exchange problem Shamai (October 10) is experiencing in that after an hour or so synchronising stopped working and it now “freezes” on connecting. Would a hard reset solve this problem with mail for exchange?

  62. admin Says:

    Colin and Shamai,
A hard reset *could* fix the problem. It is hard to say. The problem could also be caused by a rare problem with email on your server. If you no longer can sync/receive email try removing the last couple of emails from your server before the device stopped syncing.

Hi, I solved the problem by changing some security settings in Setup. I do not remember witch…

  65. Colin Says:

    Mail for exchange

I seem to have solved the problem. I did a hard reset (removing the memory card first). In addition, after the first sync, I did not further edit any profies as I think this may have caused the freeze. In other words, make sure you are happy with sync times, frequencies and mail detail before first sync and do not go back and change profile after.

    Hope this helps

I am having trouble with an E62. I had logged into google from the browser, and when i hit log out on the top right, it would refresh but not log out. Now it has worsened; it just keeps trying to load google, shows some data transfer then starts over. It is stuck on a white screen. I cleared the cache and cookies, yet it did not help. I did a hard reset, but not only did it not fix the problem, it has removed the default IM program and my golf came that was preloaded. Any ideas?

I’ve used PC Suite to transfer both .sis files into the “installs” folder on the phone memory. Then I’ve tried to Open one file, then the other. I get the “installation not supported message” in either case. Is it possible that this is happening because these are Acrobat Reader v8 files and there is a Symbian OS incompatibility? Other suggestions? I’ve browsed comments and blogs and it seemed that transferring the files to the install folder first, and then installing them from there typically succeeds. THANKS for your help!

Hi guys! I bought my E61 in Hong Kong. It comes with a Chinese English dictionary. Problem is, when I change the SD flash memory card, the dictinary disappears, as it seems to be embedded in the 64MB SD flash card that comes with the phone. I have not been able to move the dictionary from the 64MB card to the phone memory. Have any of you had that trouble before ? How did you solve it ? Cheers,

The best is to boycott this crap that Nokia continues to churn out. They don’t seem bothered with helping users with a myriad of problems the seem to be now a trademark for the Nokia brand.

I cant install any of the software from their own website because the phone pops up a message saying Installation of Nokia_E61_HotspotFinder.sis not supported”

I’ve also tried to install the SMS_Accelerator because the damn E61 now takes ages to send a one word sms.Again , I couldn’t install the accelerator because “Installation of Nokia_E61_smsaccelerator.sis is not supported”

This is utter rubbish once again from …NOKIA!!!

    Hi everyone,

Thanks a lot for the tips. I’ve installed the themes by:
    1) Coyping them in my PC
    2) Deactivating the “only signed” application installation settings (see above)
    3) Using Pc Suite’s “Install Application” utility to select the .sys files and double-clicking on them
    4) Hitting continue on the phone as many times required
    5) Going to “Tools” Themes” and selecting the ones I want

Now my problem is that I cannot uninstall them, and they take up a lot of space. I can’t find them with the “File Manager” and I can’t do “Tools” Themes” “Options” “Delete” because is not available!!! I can only “preview” “applyu” or “edit”. Any tips, short of formatting my memory card?

Quick question. Due to the limited RAM available on these smart phones, is it best to install apps on the phone memory or the memory card. Should you install less used apps like worldmate, calcium, etc on the memory card and leave the phone memory for themes, blackberry connect, exchange. Thank you for your feedback.

I have a 61 that will not take anything force fed. I can save file uninstalled the will give me the error once i try it open and install and finding them was a chore until + understood what was going on. Cingulars site forum is brim full of unhappy customers over this too. I love the phone, just not it’s insides. I’m planning to return this phone. Does the unlocked 61 version have the same issues or do these instructions actually work on them? A PDF file less them 1mb wouldn’nt open and thats bare minimum i’d say. Alright + vented, thanks.

Just found out some info on the nokia technical library and known issues. it’s not the carriers putting a block to unsigned apps, nokia is implementing this from now on. Link http://www.forum.nokia.com/document/forum_nokia_technical_library/contents/fntl/fn.technical_library.htm I also found some major differences between the 61 and 62. The 61 is 3g duel chip, one for calls and one for apps. The app chip is ARM9/220 Mhz/ 64 SDRAM/ 128 NAND Flash w/out XIP(uses ram to load apps). The 62 is 2g single chip, ARM9 235 Mhz/ 32 MB SDRAM/ 32 NOR+128 NAND Flash with XIP(loads app from origional place with flash mem). Maybe some guru computer people can shed some light to what this means. It did not state the call processer chip stats. The link is long but its in technical area, the blogs have a discussion over signing apps. In a way I agree to have thrird party sign especially if phones are half the cost of computers. Selrf signing doesn’t make it any more secure as I could not tell by looking at source code if it’s malware or not.

I have a problem installing apps that has just started happening. I’ve had an e61 for 6 months and have installed many themes and programs during that time. Today I tried to download the new Vista Black theme and and the end of the install where it should have said installation complete I received the message “unable to install”. I tried another theme which used to be on the phone and got the same message, unable to install. I downloaded a new theme that had never been on the phone and installed that, this time it said installation complete but I can’t find the theme. It is not in the themes folder and it does not show up in the applications list. I tried a few more and they all say installation complete but don’t show up anywhere. It does appear that they are using memory off the card however so they must be somewhere. I have looked in the installation folder and tried turning the phone on and off, no help. Any ideas? Has anyone else seen this issue?
