Google Gmail Settings for the Nokia E61 - Pt. 2

Two readers were kind enough to point out alternative solutions to the problem of the "untrusted certificate" warning when connecting to Gmail, as described below.

Thomas Mango at Trikenit pointed out this solution by Kevin Henrikson. Rafe from the indispensable site All About Symbian suggested a similar solution which I outlined below.

Go to the following URL from the browser of your Nokia E61 (remove the space between "certificates/ certificates" I added that for cosmetic reasons to the blog) https://www.geotrust.com/resources/root_certificates/ certificates/Equifax_Secure_Certificate_Authority_DER.cer or send the URL to yourself in an SMS and access it through the browser.

When you do this you will get an "untrusted certificate" warning but just continue. Save the certificate, you will receive a certificate warning but continue.

Press the joystick to check the two "Certificate Uses"  checkboxes and confirm with OK.

Voila - you can now connect to Gmail with the POP and SMTP setting as pop.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com without getting the "untrusted certificate" warning.

Thanks for the added information Thomas and Rafe!

    Hi,
    I was surprised when I found your blog that is dedicated to these E series. Actually, i’m considering to buy one but still trying to sell my old treo 650.
    Anyway, what I said in my post is about how eager myself to buy this nokia e61.
    will be happy to visit your blog then…

  2. admin Says:

    Hi Fisto, thanks for stopping by my blog. I actually moved from a Treo 650 to a Nokia E61 myself.
    Cheers

  3. fisto Says:

    really?…wow, and you seem happy with your decision to move from treo… :)
    probably sometimes u can share the comparisons between the two?…

  4. admin Says:

    Hi Fisto,
    I am prefectly happy with the move. I’ve been using the Treo since the 180 so it has been somewhat of an adjustment. It is a good idea for a future posting. Thanks for the idea.

  5. Alex Says:

    I too moved from Treo 650, and I am so glad I made the switch…

  6. Lisa Says:

    Ditto! I’m another switcher. Jumped from a Treo 700 to the Nokia E61

  7. admin Says:

    I might post something special for us “switchers”

  8. Tim Says:

    Is anyone else suffering from a ‘continuous loop’ problem with their Gmail? I currently have the situation where, despite setting up Gmail several times (using the wizard, not using the wizard, using pop.googlemail.com instead of pop.gmail.com, SSL enabled, and trying different ports (995)), when I try to check Gmail, the phone asks for ‘mailbox username’, ‘mailbox password, then saves it, tries to connect, and then asks for the ‘mailbox username’ all over again!

    I’ve found other forums online where people have had the same problems, but no one has posted a solution. Any ideas?

    One thing I did notice is that the phone is not saving my ‘user-defined’ port number for both the incoming and outgoing servers. That could be the root of the problem…

    Thanks for all your help!

  9. Tim Says:

    It’s confirmed: I’m an idiot.

    For anyone else encountering the same problem, make sure you’ve enabled POP access on your Gmail account. :-|

    ~Tim

  10. admin Says:

    Hi Tim,
    You’re no idiot. But thank you for pointing it out that it is a small but CRUCIAL step - to enable pop acccess on Google.
    Glad it’s working now.
    Cheers!

    Hi, I want to know if you can attach documents to Gmail when you are using it on Nokia E61. For example I write an email and attach a word or pic along with my email while just using Gmail and not any other email accounts. Is it possible?

    Thanks…

  14. Pedro Says:

    Hi, I just bought a new Nokia E61. I was wondering if someone can help me out with this email nuisance. I retrieve my email from gmail sucessfully, but then the next time my mobile phone checks for new email makes my current inbox messages (read or unread) disappear!!! I have changed gmail pop3 settings to let the downloaded email stay in the inbox but the problem persists.

    Does anyone has this problem? Any solution?

    my settings are:
    * Incoming email:
    o incoming mail serv: pop.googlemail.com
    o mailbox type: POP3
    o Security(ports): SSL/TLS
    o Port: 995
    o APOP secure login: off
    * Outgoing email:
    o Outgoing mail serv: smtp.googlemail.com
    o Security (ports): StartTLS
    o Port: 25

  15. Alex Says:

    You are a genius !!! I love this phone ! It’s my first PDA ever ! And man is this one cool. I just got the gmail retrival function rolling in. Thanks for helping out.

  16. Sinjin Says:

    how did it work out for you? my connection times out w/o a successful connection

  17. Sinjin Says:

    i changed my settings to match Pedro’s to see what would happen and now the device will connect to gmail, but then resets itself once it does.

  18. Kalel Says:

    Thank you so much. This post and this entire site has helped me so much. I love this phone, and now it is the real workhorse I knew it could be.

  19. Simon Says:

    Hey Pedro - I was having the same problem with emails disappearing each time I connected. I was trying to work out what was wrong with the phone and then realised perhaps it wasn’t the phone at all. The problem is your settings in Gmail. If you change your POP settings so you download all rather than the latest I think your Gmail will start working more as you expect.

  20. Kumar Says:

    Pedro & Simon,

    Auto forward your main gmail account to a temp gmail account specially for e61.

    Retrive the emails from the new e61 gmail account. Set your reply address to the main gmail account.

    DO NOT LOG IN TO THE NEW GMAIL ACCOUNT THROUGH THE WEB.

    Try this your emails will not disappear.

    Emails disappear because Gmail thinks that there are no new emails once you log in thorugh web.

    This works fine… copy the important emails into “My folders” after retriving and reading it. It is not smooth still but it works…

    Regards,
    Kumar

  23. Pedro Says:

    Thanks Simon and Kumar. I already have a mirrored gmail account; I used to use it on my Palm TX. I never log in through a web browser on the mirrored account, but my emails still disappear.

    I always select retrieve new email, but I will follow Kumar’s advice and see if my previous email does not disappear.

    Do you have Yahoo premium? unless you have a premium email account you cannot access your email through POP

  26. Marco Says:

    Hiya,

    I installed the certificate but forgot to check the 2 certificate uses with the joystick. Now whenever I check my email I am still getting the untrusted certificate stuff; I have tried to save the certificate again, but the problem remains. I would like to get rid of the saved certificate but I cannot locate it…

    How do I find it, please?
    Thx

    Marco :-)

  27. DocMobile Says:

    For those who are losing Emails when POP’ing GMail on E61 and E62. If you are using the Automatic Retrieve this may be caused by a setting that is unchangable when in Auto Retrieve mode. Turn off Auto Retrieve and then under Retrieval Settings change the amount from 30 to all. Then you can turn Auto Retrieve back on.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi guys,

    just purchased an E61 and love it. Having a nightmare trying to have e-mails sent to my phone though.

    I understand you need to do it through smtp.googlemail.com??

    My gmail account is configured to allow me to use pop3 forwarding. Everytime i select gmail from the wizard on the phone, it defaults to use smtp.gmail.com which doesn’t work, is there a way of setting this info manually on the phone?? if there is I can’t find it!

    or am i doing something stupid? is there anything else I need to do?

  30. panariga Says:

    smtp.gmail.com is 100% working
    built-in wizard have only 1 issue: for outgoing e-mail security must be set to SSL\TLS (not StartTLS)

  31. Bo Says:

    so can you I have Gmail POP account and ActiveSync (Mail for Exchange) active at the same time on the phone. I have Mail for Exchange for work and it displays messages right on the front screen, but not sure if I can also add Gmail? Any ideas? How would that work?

  32. Viktoria Says:

    I’ve been trying to set up the email accounts on the N e61 putting the outgoing server, incoming server infos just the way I should (you’ve been doing) (gmail) but it’s not working. When trying to retrive my mails it keep asking my login and pw three times then it says that the server refused the connection, check name and password, but I’m sure that I enter the correct infos. I’m sure some settings are missing but what? It’s really annoying!!!! What am I missing???

    Here are my settings:
    * Incoming email:
    o incoming mail serv: pop.gmail.com (i tried both gmail and googlemail)
    o mailbox type: POP3
    o Security(ports): SSL/TLS
    o Port: 995
    o APOP secure login: off
    * Outgoing email:
    o Outgoing mail serv: smtp.gmail.com (I tried both gmail and googlemail)
    o Security (ports): SSL/TLS (not StartTLS)
    o Port: 465

    The port numbers always go back to “default” after coming back to the settings, I don’t know why.

    It’s still not working!

    I live in sri lanka, im using e61, i tried many settings to configure my e61 with gmail account but it doesnt work. can anybody help me. Error message is this “general: operation time out”. I tried to log my account hundred times. Is the problem is my country? Please help me.

  36. Francis Says:

    Pedro et. alli,

    The issue of gmail disappearing from inbox is not related to the phone at all, nor to logging in the website.

    Whenever mail is downloaded via POP, it does get marked as retrieved, so it can’t be downloaded twice. If you check the All Mail label, it will still be there, but can’t be downloaded again, unless you select “retrieve all mail” on your Gmail’s preferences, which is annoying…

    I believe that a solution for this is forwarding the e-mail to another server…

    Cheers,

    Francis

    Great blog!

    Q: I got this gmail thing working ‘n all: I can send and receive e-mails, but the strange thing is, when I want to retrieve only new e-mails, it also retrieves old e-mails. The shitty thing is that it retrieves only the 350 oldest e-mails and never retrieves the newer ones.

    Billy.

  39. pacer Says:

    It need hours to get gmail work with the E61. I tried everything and this helped:
    change to the newest firmware
    if you restore the saved settings, delete the old gmail account (important!)
    set
    ingoing to pop.googlemail.com SSL/TLS Port Standard (or 995)
    outgoing to smtp.googlemail.com SSL/TLS Port Standard (or 465)
    And: set you email-adress to xyz@googlemail.com (not xyz@gmail.com)

  40. MartyX5 Says:

    Thanks a lot. Untrusted certificate has been a real pain in back.

  41. TMatin Says:

    Hi — I tried the Equifax certificate solution for my Google GMaps — but this didn’t do the trick. GMaps still asks, in a continuous loop, “Allow application Mobile GMaps to use network and send or receive data?”

    Nothing works. If you have a work-around, I’d sure appreciate it.

    THanks,

    Tim

  43. Robert Says:

    The Nokia E61 is designed to test your patience to the limit. My current problem is that I am unable to receive or send emails through my Tiscali mail servers (pop.tiscali.co.uk and smtp.tiscali.co.uk respectively). I am using the GPRS connection through Virgin. I have tried every permutation of settings but the phone hangs with the “connecting” message. I had a similar problem with my University email, which I was able to resolve by entering a new port number that the University provided. Unfortunately, I don’t have a specific port number for Tiscali and so am floundering around testing ports described on various forums for other service providers but without success. I have written to Tiscali and will post their response if they get back with an effective solution (i.e, port spec). Any help in the meantime would be gratefully received……..!

    If you put “recent:” in front of your username in your POP3 settings, your GMAIL will not delete when you recieve new email. It worked for me and have several weeks of email on my mobile POP3 inbox. I heard it will keep emails that are less than 30 days old, so I’m told, but have not done it long enough to check.

  51. SaDudE Says:

    For gmail why don’t you just use the gmail java app instead…it retains the functionality of the messaged thread that gmail is so known for. I honestly can’t figure out what email to push since my hotmail account is like garbage and my gmail is for everything else and I use the java app for that

  61. r holler Says:

    i guess this means no one can help me thanks anyway

  62. Ivan Says:

    So email on the E61 really works super well.
    Just to confirm and collect the best 2 tips from the above:

    1. Incoming
    username=recent:youurname@gmail.com
    server=pop.googlemail.com
    security=SSL/TLS
    port=995

    2. Outgoing
    username=youurname@gmail.com
    server=smtp.googlemail.com
    security=SSL/TLS
    port=465

    Note the “recent:” prefix in the pop username field. This is some google extra that creates a fake inbox with only the recent (last 30 days?) emails form your mail account.
    This is so you don’t start downloading all your e-mail since you first opened your gmail account.

    With this service and VoIP I don’t think I will need to pay the cell phone company one cent. Yeeeey for technology. And thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread and the owner of the blog for hosting this.

    Peace
