Mail for Exchange 2.5 - This One is Big
There is a new version of Mail for Exchange available - Mail for Exchange 2.5.
Mail for Exchange is the name of Nokia's email client built on Microsoft's ActiveSync technonology. Mail for Exchange provides push synchronization of email and other data between Microsoft Exchange and Nokia devices.
The new version of Mail for Exchange is not an incremental update but instead, a big step forward for this free email application.
For the first time Mail for Exchange now includes support for features available on Microsoft Exchange 2007.
So if you are in luck, and your company uses Exchange 2007 you have a few additional useful features.
Ability to set up Out of the Office auto-reply notifications from your Nokia device. In my opinion, this is probably the best feature of this release. A few of us have probably forgot to turn on the "out of office" function when we have rushed out on Friday afternoon when going on vacation. Or perhaps realized on the way to the airport, before a long trip, that we forgot to turn on the out-of-office auto replay. Well, no more booting up the laptop to set up out-of-office you can do it directly from your device.
However, finding this new function is a bit tricky. I expected the out-of-office function to show up in the calendar but it is not.
Instead, it is part of your Mail for Exchange profile. You need to go to the MfE application in the MfE folder, and then go to "edit profile" and buried deep in the settings for "profile" is out of office.
But once you find the feature it is dead easy to set up.
My second favourite feature of MfE 2.5 is support for "Follow-Up" flags so that you can see flags on the device for emails that have been flagged on the server. It is also possible to Clear flag, Flag complete and set Follow up from the device.
Mail for Exchange 2.5 also introduces a number of Mailbox policies which will make all the IT administrators of Exchange happy.
For an example, the administrator can allow or disallow simple passwords such as “12345” or “1111”. Similarly, the administrator can define the length of time a password can be used before it must be changed and also define the number of old passwords to be saved so that user can not reuse them.
These features might not seem so important for an end user but makes all the difference to the group of hard working administrators who has the thankless task of supporting us all with our email issues.
The number of supported device models has also grown. Mail for Exchange 2.5 naturally supports all Eseries devices and a number of Nseries device. MfE 2.5 supports these new devices
Nokia N78, Nokia N96, Nokia 6124 and Nokia 6220.
The release also contains a number of bug fixes - that goes without saying. But there is one more change. Mail for Exchange now comes in multiple installation files, depending on the version of Symbian on your Nokia device.
S60 3.0 - First generation Eseries i.e. E50, E60, E61(i) E62, E65, E70, N73 etc.
S60 3.1 - Some Eseries and many Nseries i.e. E51, E90, N81 8GB, N82, N95, N95 8GB
S60 3.2 - Nseries devices i.e. N78, N96, 6124, 6220 classic
Once again, please note that the above features require Microsoft Exchange 2007 server. If you / your company is using a previous version of Microsoft Exchange as your email server, the above features will not be available.
Mail for Exchange can be downloaded from here.
UPDATE:
To begin using the new Exchange 2007 server features you must perform a Full Resync on the device (Options>Full resync) after you have upgraded to Mail for Exchange 2.5.0.

Nice, now if only they could add an option to sync multiple folders….
By the way, E71 is already at the providers for testing

Gbil,
Agreed - sync multiple folders is another Exchange 2007 feature that would be nice.
However, “multiple folders” and other Exchange 2007 features are already supported in Dataviz “RoadSync” product but then again, that’s $50 per user and Mail for Exchange is free..
Can’t wait for the new hardware…

Help! I have used mfe for a couple of years and I was excited to install 2.5. My company is indeed using exchange 2007 but I don’t see the new features. Worse yet, when I am in the “day” view on my calendar the options key does not work. It will work in week view and month view but not day view. It will also not work when I have the appointment itself open. I know 2.5 is brand new but I’m hoping for some ideas. I would hate to go backwards.
June 7th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
Even I am not able to see the new features. I was able to see the Out of office feature in Blacberry Connect
June 8th, 2008 at 1:33 am
The first picture is photoshopped, the text is not really on the label.
June 8th, 2008 at 2:42 am
No “out of office” here, too… :-/ (N95 8GB)
June 8th, 2008 at 7:32 am
@ charliebrown,
It means that you are not using Microsoft Exchange 2007 as your mail server. The feature above are only available if your email server is Exchange 2007 based.
@keatisk,
Sounds like something is broken. I would start off with re-installing MfE to see if that fixes the issue.

@ charliebrown, admin:
No, I’m definitely on Exchange 2k7 (I installed the thing!) and an n95 on latest firmware and I have no new features. Great shame!
June 8th, 2008 at 9:42 am
Hi Ed, I did try re-installing 2.5. Still no luck. Could it be that I’m using an e71? It is is great phone, Nokia is allowing me to try it out. It does everything you could imagine a phone doing. It is way cool - the part I like best is being able to listen in to the live radio from the international space station, or maybe the part where the GPS just beams you wherever you want to go - really saves on the gas.
HA! I just made all that up, bet I had some of you going.
I didn’t make up the part about re-installing 2.5, but I’m using an e61. I sure want an e71 though. I’m also thinking that perhaps my company turned off the out of office option on the server for security reasons?
June 8th, 2008 at 10:09 am
I guess the new features dont work for E61
June 8th, 2008 at 11:26 am
One important thing to note (I will update the blog post) is that in order
to begin using the new Exchange 2007 server features you must perform a Full Resync on the device (Options>Full resync) after you have upgraded to Mail for Exchange 2.5.0. (from the release notes)
I am using these features on an E61i (running Exchange 2007 and it works great)
June 8th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Looks like they finally fixed the ridicously huge font.
June 8th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
Access Point Groups…. no….
Sub folders…. no….
June 8th, 2008 at 4:53 pm
The one change I do notice is a bolder font. Nice! Ed, I did do a full resync, twice. I guess I don’t care so much about the new features but the calendar problem is a real pain.
June 8th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
Keatisk,
What font change are you referring too? I’ve looked around since upgrading and don’t see a change.
Thanks!
June 8th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
I’ve installed the newly released Mail For Exchange 2.5 on my N95, but can’t get it work syncronizing the e-mails. Contacts and calendar is no problem at all. But when I enable the e-mail I get “System Error!”.
Using Exchange 2007 SP1. It did work without problem with the “old” MfE 2.3.
Any ideas anyone?
June 8th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
I can’t get it to download attachments

long time reader: the font is the same and it is the same size, it now appears to be bold. Much easier to read.
June 9th, 2008 at 5:19 am
Let’s face it, MfE is broken and will never be fixed. There is no motivation for anyone to fix it when there are paid options that work just fine.
Historically, I’m a big Nokia fan, but I’m starting to lose it with them.
As with previous respondents, access to folders is critical and they STILL DON’T SUPPORT IT… Each release it’s eagerly anticipated just to be hit with disappointment yet again.
Yours angrily…
June 9th, 2008 at 5:30 am
I downloaded and filename is 2.0.5(0). Is this the correct version?
June 9th, 2008 at 5:42 am
Installed but there is no “out of office” option?
June 9th, 2008 at 5:52 am
New 2.5 version does not work with N78. Only the directory access works but the main application crashes directly from the start.
June 9th, 2008 at 7:40 am
Still no 6120c support
June 9th, 2008 at 7:47 am
@ Mitch,
Yes, “2.0.5.0″ is the correct version - 2.5.
@ Mitch
To begin using the new Exchange 2007 server features you must perform a Full Resync on the device.
@ Darren
I’m a really big fan of MfE (Duh) and have to say that I am mightily impressed by the number of releases and new features being added to MfE. ESPECIALLY when you consider that the solution is free. Sure, it is missing support for sub-folders but if that is important, as you said, there are other solutions with support - RoadSync, but that will cost you $30.
For some people it is worth $30, others can wait.
Cheers
Ed
June 9th, 2008 at 8:53 am
I have to agree with Ed. Not just about the cost, MfE is a better product than RoadSync. I have used both, I wish MfE could use sub-folders but other than that I think you actually give up more than you get with Roadsync. I purchased RoadSync several months ago and used it for a couple of weeks, I hated that I had to go into the app to sync manually. There were also a few other things that just didn’t work well. So, when MfE didn’t work as advertised with 2.5 I went to the RoadSync site and thought I would download the latest version and see what improvements had been made since late last year. Guess what? I still have the latest version - no updates in 7 or 8 months. I’m a big believer in “you get what you pay for” but in the case of MfE vs RoadSync, that does not apply. MfE wins in a landslide - even if I can’t get the new features to work on my e61. When the heck is the e71 coming out - and does anyone know just how bad AT&T is going to mess with the firmware.
June 9th, 2008 at 9:44 am
Cyber-Jedi: I noticed in the release notes the following possible error when using a 2007 server:
Email sync: If the mailbox policy MaxEmailBodyTruncationSize is set to Unlimited this
may cause emails larger than can be handled to be sent to the phone causing the
synchronization to fail. Contact your IT administrator regarding this server setting.
You may want to check this with your server admin.
Wael: If you are using a 2007 server, you should verify if attachments are allowed to be downloaded, this could be the problem.
Mitch peter: Accordingly to the release notes, out of office is only for 2007 servers, are you using a 2007 server?
Barra: could that be because you are not installing the correct SIS file?
June 9th, 2008 at 10:25 am
I was perfectly happy with the older MFE. The only reason i was looking forward for an upgrade was to see if they would provide a setting to reduce the font size….. i have to scroll to no end to read a message. the same applies even to SMSes. right now, this is the one and only thing about my e61i that is annoying me. even my good old 6610 allowed me to change the font sizes of SMSes.
SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP OR I WILL BE FORCED TO SELL MY E61I FOR THIS SILLY REASON :((
June 9th, 2008 at 11:29 am
ajaneesh: there is a program called psiloc font magnifier. Don’t be concerned about the name, it allows you to change the font size on your e61i. You can make the font bigger or smaller as you wish. Just do a search for psiloc font magnifier and it pops right up. It is free or very inexpensive.
Hope that helps!
June 9th, 2008 at 11:45 am
ajaneesh: Download Psiloc Font Magnifier and reduce the font size to 80% (remember to decrease (or increase) font sizes by 10% in order to avoid blurry fonts). It works like a charm!
June 9th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
I rushed to install it and… was baffled when I got the infamous “UPDATE ERROR” message. If someone else gets the same: uninstalling Blackberry Connect did the trick

Don’t get me wrong, I love MfE and the fact it is free (I was having an off day), but this has been one of the big issues since I can remember… I also don’t like Road Sync. Let’s see if the new 3G iPhone’s Exchange support will support folders… Maybe time for a change…

In Settings, version 2.5 of MfE requires the user to fill a value against “Exchange Server” which wasn’t there in earlier versions.
What is required to be given? Could someone help?

Be aware !!
After installing version 2.5 I got the phone locked, and the standard unlock codde 12345 did nnot work !
I had to hard reset the phone and reinstall everythin from zero ….
June 10th, 2008 at 11:52 pm
Hi,
After installing version 2.5 I don’t get my email puished/sync out.
I have to open outlook first and the rthe emails start pushing out on my phone.
No much fun if I have to have my outlook running on my laptop all the time for the emaisl to get pushed out onto my mobile phone.
Anyone else have this problems?
June 11th, 2008 at 6:09 am
My E90 got locked after I upgraded to 2.5.
At first, we suspected that this had something to do with Exchange server settings, but it turned out that that was not the problem (mobile device security features were not set and you were not even able to generate a recovery unlock code from OWA).
The default code ‘12345′ worked.
I have no idea why this code was asked. I’ve never changed any security code settings on my phone

Keatisk, roberto: thanks for the lead on psiloc. does it allow me to change the font size at an application level? i.e. i would only want to reduce font size inside mfe. would expect everything else to remain as-is. would not want to perform a global change…
June 15th, 2008 at 10:55 am
No, I’m afraid that’s not possible. However, I actually prefer smaller fonts as the screen resolution on the device is capable of displaying much more content and AFAIK this is only possible by reducing the font size.
June 16th, 2008 at 8:49 am
RE: mfe = free?
please, the notion that a “enterprise” dievce device shouldn’t come with and therefore have to rely on thrid parties for a decent email client is ridiculous.
instead of having like 4 or 5 mail client offerings some of which are always on the outs at any given time it would be super nice if there were just one, it supported all the necessary access types (pop imap active sync blackberry (if you care)) came with the device, and it worked.
that would be super novel. also it seems like the baseline that the purchaser of a device like the e90 (communicator anyone) should have a right to expect.
June 16th, 2008 at 12:14 pm
roberto: got a chance to try it out. Looking good. i’ll buy it after evaluating it for 10 days. The only funny thing about it is that it simply shrinks the font, the other aspects such as line spacing seem to remain the same. So, when composing an email or SMS you still get to see the same no of lines as before but the only benefit is that you can cram more words onto each line
Hope one of the firmware updates of S60 will provide a more elegant way of reduicing fonts…. Also did not like the fact that even the menu sizes have to be reduced just so that i can have a better emailing experience, especially since i dont get any added benefit of seeing more menu options on a single screen.
maybe i am asking for too much from a phone… i have started comparing it to my laptop these days
thanks for the lead.

it’s not work at e61 fw3. Reason - don’t connected to the exchange server. Is anyone who have the same problem?

Feam - if that is the case then what is the max. size the e61i can handle?

I have just check and it is hanging with very small attachments. Something else buggy going on here. I have the same problem as Cyber-Jedi (E61i, Exchange 2007)

Completely irrelevant, but what theme is on the screenshots?
June 22nd, 2008 at 8:02 am
Does anyone know how to restore my E61’s security settings if I no longer need to connect to a corporate Exchange server? Uninstalling MfE did not restore to pre-MfE state, thus I still have to enter 8 digit passwords every 20 min.

Hi
I have a brand new nokia 6220, we are using exchange 2007 and I just installed the Mfe 2.5 version. But I cant get it to work. After completing the profile wizard i get the error “System error. Try again”. Ive tried to install it multiple times, I even tried to reset the phone to factory settings, but nothing worked.
Has anyone else seen this error? And more importantly, anyone aware of any workarounds?
Before my 6220 I had a Nokia E65, and used the Mfe 2.3 version without any problems.

Hi Henrik,
I have the same problem with N95 and Mfe 2.5. Even resetting to factory settings does not help.
Shitty software..
June 23rd, 2008 at 11:49 am
Ha..
Now I can sync emails, I just had to setup MaxEmailBodyTruncationSize and MaxEmailHTMLBodyTruncationSize values to something reasonable on Exchange server.
June 24th, 2008 at 12:14 am
Hi, Pasi,
What did you set the new values for the MaxEmailBodyTruncationSize and the MaxEmailHTMLBodyTruncationSize to?
Did that remove the “System error. Try again” error?

June 26th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Henrik,
I had the same and doing ‘full resync’ solved the problem.
However I get all the time ‘untrusted certificate’ even tough I installed it many times (and it worked ok till I upgraded MFE to exchange 2007…

I have used automatic period block for a while. So the phone automatically block and only when you use a pincode it’s possible to unblock the phone and use it. This function you can find with Settings - Security - Telephone and SIM - Automatic period block.
I also used MfE version 2.2.0. Everything worked fine until I wanted to unblock this function. It wasn’t possible to unblock this function in any way.
Nokia Support advised to update my phone software to version 3.0633.69.00. After the update the function was finally turned off.
I downloaded MfE 2.5.3, but when I was configuring my MfE account suddenly the block-function was turned on from itself. I had to insert the pincode to unblock my phone and from that moment it wasn’t possible to turn this function off again.
Does anybody know it there are any problems with the latest version of MfE (2.5.3) and automatic period block on a nokia E65?
