Nokia E61 - Keep an Eye on Those Log Files

The Nokia E61 has a great tool for keeping track of the device's complete communication history - the log files. In the log files you can see detailed information about Recent Calls, Call Duration and Packet Data.

In Recent Calls you can find information about missed and received calls and what numbers you have dialled. You can also dial and manage numbers from the Recent Calls log. You can set the length for which the logs you should be stored.

There is nothing truly unique about these types of logs. They have been a standard feature for quite some time. However, when you are using an advanced device such as the Nokia E61 you will be surprised by the information in the log.

If someone would have asked me to guess how much I have been using the E61 I would have been completely off. Never would I have guessed that I have been on the phone for 22 hours!

What is even more surprising to me is how much data I have been using. Oh boy - am I glad I signed up for an unlimited data package…. phew! Over 40 MB of data.

What is even more surprising is that this is less than 30 days' of usage and I have NOT been using the Nokia E61 as a modem for my computer - I know that can rack up the data pretty quickly. No, this is data I used on the device.

A word of advice - keep an eye on those log files. It's a great device and if you are anything like me you will use it a lot…

Ed, my apologies if this is out of context…
I’ve been trying to transfer data using data cable & Fedora core 5, the transfer seems to very erratic. Unmount (& hence buffer flush) takes ages!

Are you too facing the same problem?

    Thanks,
    Mayank

You know what; I just got mine last night and while I still have a few issues to resolve - not the least of which is finding a charger or an adapter for the European charger that came with the phone - signing up for the unlimited data package is right at the top of the list… In fact, I’m heading over to Cingular’s website right now.

    Thanks for the heads up.

AFAIK the data counter log is for all data connection, include WiFi.

If you want to know exact gprs traffic, from the Log chose right tab.

    Thanks.

I am having one problem with the log file. When I turn off or reset the phone, I lose the entire contents of the log file. Is anyone else having this problem? I wished that it did not do that, because sometimes that’s how I look up numbers that are not in my contact list. Does anyone know how to prevent that?

    Hi Sami,
Have you tried using a different access point? Are you running BlackBerry on your device?

  9. sami makki Says:

yes, I tried it out with Wlan and GPRS Access Points. But same message I keep getting.

No, I am not using Blackberry on my phone.

    thanks

    Hi Sami,
I’ve never coma across that before. Have you tried removing the battery, waiting a minute and then booting up again?
If you try that, and it still doesn’t work I would consider a hard reset. A hard reset will wipe off all data but I have seen the hard reset solve many, many issues.

    hey guys NEED HELP.
have had my phone for three months or so. When I initially got it, sending txt goes in like a second or maybe less. But the more i used it, the longer it seemed to take. I eventually had to go through a hardreset to restore to original settings and txting came back to normal.
Now its start to get slow again. I have tried deleting txt logs.
Has anyone experienced this? How can i resolve?

    Hi,

For some reason, my E61 only holds OUTGOING Call Logs for te last day only. Incoming and missed seems OK, I’ve currently got missed calls from 2 weeks ago (Even though the phoe has been used for over a month now). I have chosen 30 days call log retention in the menu. Doesnt seem to take.

The Firmware I have is: 1.0610.04.04.

Anyone else face the same problem?

  13. Masood Says:

I am having problem with LOG when I compare it 9500 Communicator. E61 is holding only last 20 dialed numbers or received calls. Is there a application which will maintain a saparate log similar to 9500 communicator?

Other problem I am facing is while receiving calls, Names are not appearing although contact name and number is in contacts. I am able to see names of the contacts only if it is stored in SIM card. Any solution to this problem??

    Hi Masood,
Did anybody have a solution for the names of receiving calls not facing? I have the same problem.

    Hi MHd,

Could you clarify how to determine GPRS traffic only? I’m not sure which is the “Right Tab”. The blue button (for Options) on the lefthand-side only offer settings to change the Log Duration and Show Call Duration. The right blue button takes you backward. I don’t see any setting to extract GPRS data logging only.

I am billed for GPRS traffic only, so I’d love to track it exclusively because my WiFi traffic is free.

    Thanks :)

  16. Lizelle Says:

This is great! To view your GPRS traffic in the log, use the joystick to open up the second screen (data details). The Log page is defaulted to Recent Calls, Call Duration and Packet Data - don’t select any of those, just use the joystick to go ‘right’.

    Thanks a lot, BTW
