Nokia E61i Firmware Update - v3.0633.69.00
Thanks to RP_Guy I found out that there is a new (to me at least) firmware available for my Nokia E61i and Nokia E65
The update process went like a charm! I used the latest version of Nokia's software update tool to update the device. It is amazing how easy and painless this process is.
However, I always recommend that you CAREFULLY read the instructions before you update! Also remember to back up everything on your device since it will be reset and wiped during the process.
One last word of advice - if you are using BlackBerry Connect for Nokia make sure that the new firmware is compatible with BlackBerry Connect BEFORE you update.

You going to post anything on the E71?
Lots of info on it just look at http://www.boygeniusreport.com even a video review
May 29th, 2008 at 9:15 pm
Hi GL,
Expect me to write a lot about the devices when I get my hands on one. Until then I probably won’t spend much time on it for two reasons. I try to publish original content, as much as I can, and secondly I prefer to try out the product after it is available and write/discuss it rather than to speculate it.
So stay tuned

I might as well upgrade to this latest version prior to setting up the mailboxes and other applications. I have my backup.

Great to have you back Ed!!!
Glad to hear that E series spirit is within you :))
May 30th, 2008 at 12:22 am
Yes, I also suspect that Ed, like us at All About Symbian, would rather keep things 100% above board and not re-post leaks and rumours that, ultimately, just annoy the manufacturers…
Of course, the leaks are perhaps part of the general PR, building up Apple iPhone-like expectations…. ? Discuss!!

May 30th, 2008 at 3:28 am
I dont seem to be able to get the update, it states I am already on the latest release v2.0633.65.01.
Anyone any ideas why that would be?
May 30th, 2008 at 5:14 am
So, for those who received this PR3 release, what’s your E61i’s product code?
Mine is 0541667, and I still only have 2.0633.65.51 available.

When was the last time they’ve updated E61 firmware? I wonder if they’ve just abandoned it?
May 30th, 2008 at 8:10 am
Bad news is now Nokia Software Updater not support Vista.
May 30th, 2008 at 8:33 am
Good thing there’s XP to go back to.. Was wondering why I still also only can get 2.0 firmware when I checked a while ago…

You can use the nokia software under vista by right clicking on the icon and selecting properties and then under compatability mode, select Windows xp sp2. Press ok, then once again right click on the update sw icon and select “Run as Administrator” and it the updater works fine !

Hi Luca,
As far as I know you need a PC to updated the firmware, there is no Mac version of the NSU.
June 1st, 2008 at 5:59 pm
And a PC without Windows Vista. It’s not supported for the moment.

Any progress with the Bluetooth/GPS issue? (non Nokia GPS are not working with Nokia applications).
Is it an FP1 version?
Thanks

Hi Guys
I did a firmware update on my E61i. Prior to that I did a full backup. After I finished updating I then did a Restore BackUp, thats when I noticed that all my contacts have vanished.
I then tried to Restore them (using Nokia PC Suite ofcourse) by only ticking ‘Contacts’ - it does show that it is restoring after that the phone asks to restarts. After restart, there is still nothing under my Contacts!!!
I tried to use Noki to browse through the BackUp file and manually extract my Contacts into a vCard. Then I transfer this to my phone via Nokia Phone Browser. I realised that only 50 out of 241 Contacts are restored!!!!
Then I tried Shozu/Zyb to sync the Contacts back - but no success. Now, when I try to copy the vCard file with all my Contacs from Shozu/Zyb and try to transfer it to my phone using Nokia Phone Browser the Nokia Explorer Crashes then it doesnt open again!!!
What other options are there for me????
Thanks
Please mail me: eliasmh at gmail dot com with your suggestions.
Thanks
Maelly

2.0633.65.51 is the only version available to me…
Anyone else’s phone slower than crap? We’re talking 30+ seconds to pull up a text message sometimes?
It’s been a while since I updated the thing, so I was kinda hoping this would fix my problems…but sometimes I just want to throw this thing against the wall.

thanx anyway.
June 10th, 2008 at 2:46 am
Well for you guys that aren’t showing updates, i recommend going to google and searching nsu product code change and finding an apac code for your e61i and changing your phone to it. For the most part, it’s behind the scenes types of updates to the phone, and mostly minor things. If you haven’t reset the phone in a while, it’s a good time to do it in conjunction with the update. Someone on hofo found that bt was polling faster. And personally i’ve never had a problem using my holux gpslim240 with tomtom 6.012 or nokia maps, but i have’t tried it with the new version yet.
June 10th, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Please note that all the 3rd party apps will be gone after upgrading the firmware. Have to reinstall everything
June 10th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
change the nsu product code, maybe you will get key mapping problem, cause have many type of keypad.
June 15th, 2008 at 4:35 am
After update, I’ve noticed that “Contacts” key sometimes does not work. I have to reboot the phone to make it work again. Anyone else encountered this problem ? It’s similar with a known bug of Nokia E65.
June 15th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
so far i don’t have this problem after upgrade the firmware. now feel more respond then before.

HELP! I was in the middle of upgrading my firmware to this 3.x version when the phone was “disconnected” from the PC. Even thought it wasn’t the download stopped.
I have a phone from Hong Kong that I changed to use in the US. I’ve upgraded the firmware in the past to 2.x. And had the Key’s remapped to work for US.
The problem now is that the phone won’t turn on past the white indicator light. I have nothing coming up. The firmware failed and I have nothing. I don’t care if I have to reset the phone or whatever, but I can’t even get anything to show up to even attempt this. Any help would be GREATLY GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks,
Gary

Does anyone know if there is a keyboard mapping chart for the various e61i product codes?
I thought I read that the 0538563 Product code has the same keyboard layout as the 0541667 code on another thread. It also supports the latest firmware.
I’m not so much interested in going to the latest software but seeing if I can get UTMS support working. I have the 0541667 code and from all the threads I’ve read it doesn’t support UTMS because of something in firmware version of that software. Figured I’d try changine the product code and firmware to see if it fixed the problem as long as the keyboard layout was close.
Anyone have:
Top row: Q! W% E$ R1 T2 Y3 U* I- O+ P=
Sec row: A~ S( D) F4 G5 H6 J# K_ L&
3rd row: Z X C V7 B8 N9 M0 ,; .:
Bot row: /’ @” Space ?^
(Second Char “Blue” or “Shift”)
As a keyboard layout or something close WITHOUT product code 0541667? I don’t care if it’s an exact match since I can just use the “Chr” key to for things like the “$” symbol.

Any idea if this update fixes the maps not displaying issue? Lots of users on Nokia forums have complained that some phones (including my E61i) only display maps downloaded from the network and ignore the map data on the SD card.
The problem seems to be with MapsLoader which doesn’t load the maps right for some phones. Here’s a way to download the maps directly without using Maps Loader:

I just tried to run my e61i through a firmware upgrade, half way through it seemed to imagine that the phone had been disconnected. Now the phone dont go. anything I can do before I fork out squillions of $$ to get the dealer to have a look at it?
June 23rd, 2008 at 1:18 pm
Shane, I just had the same problem and sent my E61i to iunlock.com. They flashed the phone for $40 plus shipping. Quick turnaround and paypal friendly it worked like a charm. The phone will comeback completely formatted though, hope you have your data backed up!
June 24th, 2008 at 2:49 am
I have met the same problems with Gary and Shane.
Halfway through the upgrade process, my cellphone was “disconnected” from the PC even when the indicator lights said otherwise.
Now, Nothing is displayed…only the white indicator light. Anyone who knows what I should do to remedy this problem? I am in the Philippines by the way.
June 24th, 2008 at 4:17 pm
Thanks Gary.
Jean, I am in New Zealand - and I just took my phone back to the shop I bought it, they are going to send it away, apparently its just a simple software problem and is likely to only cost $45. It will come back completey formatted but luckily I backed up.
Dont think I’ll be doing a firmware upgrade again in a hurry..
June 25th, 2008 at 2:58 am
Thanks for the reply. I was more worried at having to purchase another phone. It is a bit of a consolation to know it can be formatted.
I am not doing any hasty update again, ever… and planning to revert to the dual band which gained popularity 5 years ago so I will not be tempted of upgrading any software.
June 26th, 2008 at 11:33 pm
Gary, Jean Rose and Shane,
I haven’t yet upgraded and am usually a “wait and watch” person. I think the key issues I look for before an upgrade are:
1. Is this upgrade really worth it? What does it do - faster? better support for an application I use? just for kicks?
2. Does the new firmware support existing applications? For instance, blackberry connect usually takes a couple of days before putting up support for new firmware. I don’t want to be in a position where I have new firmware but can’t load blackberry - I think admin has already pointed this out.
3. Does the new firmware kill an existing good application or feature. For instance, I have got my phone to have two simulteneous active connections (basically blackberry and internet at the same time), but I don’t know/ remember how I did it. I don’t want to have to reinvent the wheel on the new version - so until someone confirms that two connections work or tell me how they work, I don’t think I want to upgrade. Any help here guys?
4. General problems - This blog is usually updated with problems people are having so I make sure I update myself with that. Disconnection seems to be a problem with the new firmware for some. So need to be sure we are in a trouble free environment to upgrade.
5. Finally, I look to see if the new firmware issues resolved list is of any use to me. This could make a compelling decision to upgrade. You will find that several annoyances are eliminated. Often “make or break” upgrade decisions are taken by me on this basis.
Seems quite scientific? It’s not. Finally it’s the gut feel - should I or should I not. Presently I think it’s a NO for me principally because the firmware doesn’t seem to be faster than the previous one. I upgraded by E65 because it was slow and it really sped up my navigation experience. I don’t see that happening for E61i, so until that happens .. it’s still version v2.0633.65.01 for me!!
July 9th, 2008 at 11:35 am
I upgraded and it works perfectly no issues as of now
