Nokia E61 Mail For Exchange - ActiveSync

In an earlier post I wrote about using BlackBerry on the Nokia E61. This time the turn has come to ActiveSync on the Nokia E61, or as it is called - Mail for Exchange.

Just as with BlackBerry the installation of Mail for Exchange is a true cakewalk. However, since there is no equivalent of the BlackBerry Connect Desktop Application the set up felt a tad bit quicker and easier.

As soon as the application is installed on the device you create a synchronization profile that controls what and when you synchronize.

You are asked to set-up your preferred network connection, password, user name, servers, synchronized content and the synchronization schedule and that is it. The whole set-up including installing the application took less than 10 minutes.

As soon as my profile was set-up I could immediately initialize the first synchronization of contacts, calendar and email. A few minutes later my device was up to date and Mail for Exchange running in the background.

Because both BlackBerry Connect and Mail for Exchange (ActiveSync) use the native Nokia E61 email client as the foundation the look and feel of the two email solutions are more or less identical.

I tried Mail for Exchange some days ago, but the syncronization process has some problems, and unluckly the s60 standard mail client, is not so good.
I think that sync problems are not imputable on Mail for Exchange, but on somewhat on Exchange. Probably “intereferences” with some antivirus software.

I had two major problems with the ActiveSync client compared to Blackberry (an actual Blackberry - I haven’t tried the E61 BB client yet). These were that it doesn’t auto-download a message when you get past the initial 5k or so. You have to open the menu, select the correct option and wait while it connects to the server. This is much less transparent than a Blackberry. Secondly it doesn’t handle meeting requests - you can view them but you can’t accept or decline them.

I believe, though I’m sure you can confirm, that you can do both of these things with the Blackberry client for the E61.

  5. Alexey Says:

    Dear admin,
can you connect to the MS Exchange server alone with the programm described, or some sort of ActiveSync add on should be installed.
Or I am totally wrong and this thing only synchronizes with Outlook?
    Thank you

  6. Papi Says:

I have very recently acquired an E61 and as it was just before a trip I had to take, and having briefly read about some problems with Nokia’s version, I have opted for Rsync (commercial). Unfortunately I am not able to launch hyperlinks from within emails, so I was wondering if this was a limitation in the formatting provided by rsync, or another type of problem … Simply put: can you use hyperlinks in emails obtained via Nokia’s version of active sync?

  7. Exchange Activesync for Nokia E61 - Tech[dot]Blog - All about Computers, Smartphones and The Internet Says:

[...] The E-Series Blog has written a guide on how to install the Mail for Exchange (Activesync) module for Nokia E61 and configure it for synchronizing your email, contacts and calendar directly with the Exchange Server along with complete screenshots. The process is quick and quite simple. It uses the native Nokia E61 email client e61 exchange activesync nokia s60 tutorials [...]

  8. Beppe Says:

Mail for Exchange should work fine with native last version and last service pack of MS Eschange, and syncronizes e-mail, contacts and calendar items on native Nokia E61 resources.
Therefore every limitation encountered come, almost surely from E61 native programs (attachment download, hyperlink function, autodownload, etc.).
I don’t know who has truly test Mail for Exchange and ActiveSync functionality, but I found a lot of problems:
    . calendar items don’t sync;
    . attachment missing;
    . contact items partial sync;

  9. admin Says:

    Hi Papi,
Yes, I can open hyperlinks from emails using Mail for Exchange (ActiveSync).

    Hi Beppe,
I haven’t experienced any of the issues you described. All my contacts and calendar items were perfectly synced. I haven’t lost any attachements. My only obeservation is that the application seems to generate a lot of network traffic but since I am on an all you can eat/unlimited data package that is not a concern for me.
    Cheers

  10. Beppe Says:

    Dear admin,
on Internet you may find people who have problems similar to mine. But it seems that most important problems are coused by Exchange server and in particular by some antivirus program on Exchange server.
Maybe these problems are present using other MS Exchange Sync tools.
To give just an example, take a look at this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827615/en-us

    Hi,
I have an E70 & use Active Sync. I have a couple of issues, though mostly it works fine.
    1. I have a wi-fi access point at home, and can sync using that. I can also sync over GRPS. I have set up an Access Point Group to combine the two, but can’t seem to put that in the Mail For Exchange set up. Anyone able to do this?
Also, my mail site has a certificate for secure use, but I have to accept it EVERY time! Bit of a pain when n aut. Any way to accept once & for all.
    Thanks for a great site!
    Mike

  12. Cyberdoggie Says:

    Mike -

Here’s the scoop regarding WiFi and ActiveSync. So apparently you should be able to connect if you have A WiFi access point set however ActiveSync is not set up to enable you to have connectivity automatically switch from GPRS into WiFi and back. You have to connect with one when you’re home “WiFi” and one when you’re on the road “Internet-GPRS”

I also believe there is a user workaround where you’re able to get the certificate into a format where you are able to get it into a format where it’s able to be installed onto your phone. If anyone knows how to do this please share. The other option is that the phone has certs on it and if it’s possible by having these installed into the server you can also bypass this issue. More if I find out more.

  13. Raj Says:

The ActiveSync client works well with our various Exchange implementations. We even got it to work with SSL using a relatively inexpensive cert from GoDaddy.

Here’s some gripes (I’m using the latest version 1.2.13) :

    1) doesn’t connect via access point group - only via access point so you can’t connection switch

    2) doesn’t support a longer timeout/refresh period so you get errors on the server about configuration

    3) uses alot of bandwidth

Roadsync from DataViz apparently resolves #2 and #3 but I have yet to test (the initial download I did didn’t work).

    Additionally:

    4) can’t access subfolders like a true ActiveSync client

    5) signature doesn’t work in some instances

Outside of that, for reading incoming email while on the go, for syncing contacts and for booking meetings, it’s great!

  14. Nader Says:

    Hello all;

I think I need to highlight to all nokia users that MS ActiveSync is not MS Exchange. MS ActiveSync is a program used to sync PocketPC’s with either Outlook or MS Exchange (configured in ActiveSync). It is basically the equivalent of PC Suite.

My issue here is that one of my criteria’s for choosing this phone, was it’s alleged ability to connect to MS ActiveSync (as stated on the website). Having bought one, I cannot see how it would connect to MS Active Sync at all. Nokia Customer Care have yet to demonstrate E61 communicating with MS Active Sync and only keep escaliting my issue.

I believe that either people are getting their terminologies wrong or I am missing a peice of the puzzle.

Just to Say it again, ACTIVE SYNC is not EXCHANGE. Active Sync is a tool used by PocketPC PDA’s on MS Windows Desktops.

  15. Eric Says:

    Nader-
The protocol MS Exchange uses to synch Calendars/Contacts/Mail is termed “Exchange ActiveSync”, or “ActiveSync” for short. This is not the same as the desktop app for synching WM devices. (See http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/2003/actsyncfaq.mspx). I was confused like you when I first heard this, but it makes sense now. Hope this helps!

    -Eric

  16. Nader Says:

I see what what you are saying but that is not how nokia are adverting this product. Their website clearly says “MS Active Sync” and nothing else. No reference to Exchange Active Sync.

I am allowing this to playout with Nokia Customer Care only so that when I take this to the Trade Practices governising body, they can do something about Nokia’s less than informed marketing department. As far as I am concerned, MS Active Sync mean the little program I download from Microsoft called MS Active Sync and hence this product does not perform to what has been advertised. I have purchased this product under a Carrier contract and am now stuck with it.

The laws here in Australia will force nokia to provide me with a phone (if it goes the way I think it will) that has those exact specifications advertised on their site. If they have no product that can, then they have to look at other manufacturers.

  17. Daniel Says:

Very good write up. I had just picked up this device and as a complete newb I ran into one problem. I did not know where to find the “Mail for exchange” program once it was installed. I found it now though.

    Hi there, useful blog!

I was just wondering whether any has had any problems downloading Mail for Exchange. On my phone the app downloads and the install starts up.

But then I get a message saying ” Unable to check certificate validity online, check settings”.

I have no idea what settings this error message is refering to ….

Anybody know what I need to do?

I bought an unlocked E61 (I live in the US) and I accidentally deleted the “Mail for Exchange” app in the Installation section. Anyone have an idea where I can re-download it?

  22. Nader Says:

Nokia have confirmed that their technical specification of the E61 is not detailed enough for a customer to make a decision on support for active sync.

I am now waiting for Nokia Customer Care to call me to offer me some options.

Will keep this blog informed with what they offer.

  23. Michael Rivers Says:

Try http://www.mail2web.com for a free email address that allows one to use Mail for Exchange as the client. I now forward my gmail acccount to this account and have a push email experience.

I’m using mail2web.com and I’m forwarding my gmail to it. But whenever I reply to an email, it uses my mail2web.com email address. Is there a way to set the “reply to” address to my gmail?

  27. Raj Says:

Apparently Mail for Exchange 1.2.14 has been released now. I am using both MFE and DataViz RoadSync on my E61 for seperate Exchange accounts. So far, so good. DataViz is slick, works well with Exchange but has a god awful mail reading and composition interface. Additionally, if it’s the second mail client on your mobile, it doesn’t notify you so no mail received light shows up.

Anyone know what’s new in 1.2.14 for MFE?

  28. Ollie Says:

I love the Exchange integration, but having come from Windows Mobile v5.0 I am REALLY missing the ability to move emails into subfolders. That was such a critical benefit, and made it so much easier to keep the Inbox under control. I’m hoping that the system can be extended by someone or Nokia, but I guess I’m outa luck. Anyone?

  29. Adam Says:

I am pondering whether to go with a Samsung MS V 5 smartphone, or the E61 synced with exchange. Can anyone tell me if under this E61 sync system:

    1. It provides push email, or is entirely pull
    2. It will show email subfolders. I note Ollie above says he cannot move emails about, but can you actually see the subfolders? This has always been a limitation with Cymbian systems linked to Exchange (you only see the Inbox)
    thx!

  30. Pearse Says:

I had mail for exchange working fine with my e61s, now they go through the sync process give a log of complete, but add no emails, calenders or contacts.
The web/oma test is still ok even from the e61s. BTW I have sophos av on my exchange server. Any ideas? Tnx in advance

  31. Raj Says:

Pearse, you tried an alternate client like RoadSync and/or uninstalling MFE on the handhelds? How many E61s stopped working?

Tried remotely wiping your devices? Anyhow - this is probably not the forum for MFE support…

  32. Swedish Editor Says:

I have found one problem. When adding a second mobile phone number to a contact on the Nokia E61, that second mobile phone number will not be synced back to Outlook.

Probably this occurs because Outlook only has one field for mobile phone per contact. The information therefore is lost in Outlook. Any advice on how to avoid this? Many of my contacts have more than one mobile phone these days.

  33. Ollie Says:

I’m coming to realise the limitations of Mail for Exchange, and it’s quite ugly:

    1. High bandwidth usage
    2. The need to MANUALLY reconfigure the conection type every time I leave the office (wi-fi) to go elsewhere (GPRS). This is just totally absurd. Clearly the Mail for Exchange app should suport access point groups.
    3. No ability to see sub-folders in the Exchange account
    4. No ability to move emails to sub-folders. How is a guy meant to stay on top of 100 emails a day if he can’t file any?

I spent 2hrs trying to get RoadSync’s trial working today and it looks like junk software - the installation fails first time, every time. And after two installs it appears, but just exits without warning during the initial sync. Doesn’t sound like $99 worth of software to me and as far as I can see, it doesn’t resolve the issues above.

Surely there must be a decent Exchange connector?

  34. Raj Says:

    Ollie,

I agree about the limitation for MFE. The DataViz product only really resolves the bandwidth issue but doesn’t allow you to go access point groups or sub-folders either. I think the first issue is because the connection to the Exchange Server is supposed to always be on for server push to work.

RE: Roadsync, it seems to have the problem you describe in some E61s. I have a Euro keyboard E61 (bottom right key is Car) and the American keyboard E61 (bottom right key is Chr), doesn’t work on the Euro version. Of course I installed RoadSync first on the phone, fresh when I got the American version. Bonus is I get to enjoy a connection to two Exchange Servers on one handheld with this Blackberry-like technology.

RE: RoadSync, the end-user interface, ie reading and composition screens are not up to snuff. The font is hard to read and scrolling happens one line at a time as opposed to one page at a time.

  35. Ollie Says:

Yes, and the issue means I have a choice for my email:
    1. Set Mail for Exchange to always connect via GPRS, and pay the absurd data charges from my provider (Orange, UK)
    OR
    2. Remember to change the connection setting every time I change location

Option is expensive, and option 2 is unworkable. Is there a better way?

Roadsync’s choice of font is a tragedy.

  36. Raj Says:

No better way seen in the wild yet (the DataViz product claims to use less bandwidth). Thankfully I signed an unlimited data contract here in Canada but since then, the carrier has stopped providing this service so I fear I’ll be in the same position as you once the contract ends.

  37. jonthan Says:

    Dear admin,

I recently installed the mail for exchange software on my E61 and had it synching with the exchange server at work. I had to hard reset my E61 and have since reinstalled the software however it no longer seems to syn. It says it is connecting and nothing happens from there. I am using the smartoraming software to automatically connect to nearest hotspot.

Apprecaite your help on this matter

    Regads,

  38. Saed Says:

All e61 reviews highlight the PC/Mail sync problems of the nokia. Nokia just can’t get it that outlook is the defacto standard for office workers these days, and for a business phone to make it, you just need to get this right. I have been using the e61 for a week now, it is a great phone, but unless Nokia works with Microsoft and get the “real active sync” to work, the windows based mobile phones will be the only choice… wait till the motorola Q is out.

  39. Matt Says:

Ok, here’s some very useful information for all of you people that are having problems.

First of all - Certificate issues

If your company uses a self-signed certificate resulting in Mail for Exchange always popping up the “This site has sent an untrusted certificate”, then take a look at http://support.dataviz.com/support.srch?docid=13796&pid=165.

Second - problems getting Mail for Exchange to Connect and no real details in the log?

Answer - download to your PC a copy of RoadSync from http://www.dataviz.com. You must download it to your PC and install it via the Nokia installer or copy it across via bluetooth. It won’t install from the web. When thats installed, enable verbose logging and try to connect to your server again. There will be a lot more information in the RoadSync log which will help you troubleshoot. There is also a great section on Error Codes on the support site at dataviz

Thirdly - is your Exchange Server acting as a front AND backend server? This is generally the case when you only have one Exchange server AND you have enabled it for RPC over HTTPS (Outlook RPC access over the Web). If you have AND you have enabled it for an SSL connection only, then check your server log for error code 3029 and then read http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=3052&kbid=817379. You’ll need to follow instructions for Option 2.

After doing all this, Mail for Exchange and RoadSync worked great. RoadSync has more options and I’ll have a bet with anyone that they are quicker to bring out all the features that we’re looking for.

    Have Fun !!

  40. Mark Harrell Says:

I like Roadsync but can’t get the gprs connection to stay active so Push email will work. Any suggestions? I’m on Cinguylar

  41. Saed Says:

    Dear Jonathan ,
I am having similar problems now. Did the solutions that Matt mention in his post work with you? (BTW, How do you hard-reset the E61, i know stupid question but this is my first Nokia since 1998 :) )
    regards,
    Saed

  42. Terje Says:

I have a Nokia E61 which we got about a month ago. I have set up the native “Mail for Exchange” application and it works a treat so long as I connect to the Internet using WiFi. As soon as I try connecting using the mobile carriers packet network (GPRS) it stops working. So I get email at home or in the office but not when I’m on the move, which kind of defeats the point of having the device.

I don’t think it would be a problem with our exchange server because it all works okay via WiFi. And I don’t think it’s specifically a carrier problem because the web browser on the E61 can connect via GPRS and access the exchange server okay via the OMA (Outlook Mobile Access) webpage that the activesync uses. It seems to be a bug with “Mail for Exchange” and the way in interacts with our carrier which is Optus (Australia). Maybe Nokia are handing out the wrong carrier settings, or maybe the Mail for Exchange software has a bug. I don’t know yet.

Nokia have reformated my E61 with no improvement. They now say that some guy in Finland has confirmed the problem and is looking into it.

Other than this one major bug I think the phone is great. I hope they fix it quickly because we will immediately buy a half dozen more when they do.

  43. Terje Says:

    Saed,

For details on hard reset see the wikipedia article below:-

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_E61

    Regards,
    Terje.

  44. Saed Says:

The ability for accepting/declinging meeting request is an important feature that is missing. Can anyone convey this to the folks at Nokia?

  45. Terje Says:

It would also be good if they offered the option of synching sent messages.

  46. Terje Says:

I have now updated to the new “Mail for Exchange” software (version 1.3.0) in the hope that it would resolve the synchronisation issue I outlined above. However there is no improvement. It will synch okay on a WiFi (WLAN) connection but not over the Optus GPRS or 3G data connection. So I only get email at home or in the office but not when I am on the road.

It is not a problem with out mail server because it works via wireless and we also have an O2 XDA ATOM that works okay with the server (via either wireless or Optus GPRS).

I love the Nokia E61 however this bug is a major pain.

  47. Terje Says:

    Yeah!!! Fixed it.

I now have it working. After installing version 1.3.0 I deleted all my carriers access points from the phone and downloaded a fresh set as per the following article. (I have tried this several times before but this time it actually made a difference).

    http://www.e-series.org/archives/18

It seems that the access point configuration details must have changed. In my case the access point that now works with “Mail for Exchange” is the one called “Optus Internet”.

  48. Adie Says:

I’ve obtained 2 Nokia E61’s with Vodafone UK Contract tarifs & don’t seem to be able to get the push functionality enabled. I’ve installed Mail for Exchange 1.3.0 (new release from website) and have input all the settings for our exchange server correctly, and have selected “Always On” which i’m assuming is Nokia’s equivalent to “Push” email schedule. When i try & save the Mail for Exchange profile i get an error “Mail for Exchange server does not support always on sync schedule”. I’ve got push email working on an Imate SP5 (O2) and another O2 WM5 Device.
We really want to use the Nokia E61 handset here, but the Push functionality is a show stopper for us. Has anyone else come across this issue with the E61 & Vodafone Contract? I’ve tried using my O2 Contract card (from my Imate SP5 which does Push email with no problems), but i don’t know what GPRS settings to apply to the E61 for O2. Any suggestions would be much, much appreciated. Been onto Nokia Business Support who tried to flog me their Intellisync software (no thanks) and Vodafone business support wasn’t much help either. :-(

  49. Fionn Says:

E61 won’t work with MFE 1.3 locks at connecting stage. I have downloaded demo of RoadSync and it seems ok. Any ideas?

  50. Adie Says:

Got to the bottom of my problem, Vodafone apparently needed to an a ‘APNIAS’ SOC number to my account. took the rep about 5 seconds to do & after that Always On sync works a treat. Only took 5 weeks to resolve & in the end i popped my o2 card into the e61 & it worked fine. Vodafone apparently then decided to fix the issue. Never mind, i’m happy it now works & can recommend it as our Mobile Comminucations Kit.. :-) Great phone, really pleased with it.

We have implemented Mail for Exchange for Nokia E61 with Exchange 2003 SP2.

I have noticed that we get a System Error -15003 several times and usually when the device is switching from Off-peak to Peak times.

Can you please advise on this?

  52. Antonio Says:

    Hi Terje.
I’m glad you solved the gprs sync issue.
Just to let you know, I had the same problem:
synced perfectly over wifi but no way using my
    Vodafone gprs/umts connection. The same
connection worked using other apps (web, roadsync, …).
After days of experimenting I finally found out that
manualy configuring dns in the gprs/umts profile solved the
problem. Maybe Mail For Exchange timed out before my provider’s
    dhcp finished sending network configuration.

  53. Richard Says:

I am using the E61 with Mail for Exchange and direct push works great, BUT I cannot seem to accept a calendar invite. That is a huge limitation as I am on the road and live and die by the calendar. Am I missing something? Is this a feature fothcoming? I purposely switched from the Blackberry and now may have to change back.

  54. Hilmar Gudm Says:

    Hi all,

I am getting one error which is “Cannot sync with server. Please try again later” I get this error after it gets 50 mails and than it stops. I re-installed mail for exchange but I have the same problem.

I also have a app which I cannot remove. It is called “MailForExchangeLauncher.sis”. I cannot find it to delete it. It comes as a not installed item on the app mgr.

    Help would be great.

    1) Does Nokia have plans for N-series support for Mail For Exchange?

    2) What is the best (and inexpensive) mail/Exchange synch software for a) a Nokia N73, and b) a Nokia E61 (I have both)?

  59. admin Says:

    Hi Will,
In regards to question 2): Not sure what you mean by Exchange Sync software but if you are referring to Mail For Exchange (which is the Nokia name for the ActiveSync mail protocol) it is free. Of course, your company needs to run Micro$oft Exchange 2003 SP2.

    It works great!

  60. Antonio Says:

    Guys,

I’ve been a regular user of Windows Smartphones for the last couple of years. Sync with the Corporate Exhange server was always a breeze: load the required certificates, define server address, unesrname, password and domain. A piece of cake, that too a max of 5′ every time. No hassle.

Last week, I got tired of waiting for the Motorola Q and fell for an E61, very reasonably priced in Hong Kong. Very mixed feelings for the time being. Although I concede Nokia have made a definite effort towards having my laptop and phone talk to each other without my intervention, Sync with Exchange is far from being simple.

I’m strongly disappointed with the Nokia Client for Exchange servers. The storygoes as follows:

    i) GPRS must be configured OK in my phone, as I can download different web pages without a problem.

ii) I’m also able to download new mail from the Server to the E61, read it, and delete mail in the phone, that is subsequently deleted in the Exchange server when I sync again.

iii) I’m NOT being able to upload (send) mails written in the E61 to the Exchange server. Everytime I get a very annoying “System Error” message. No more explanations. The mails remain stubbornly in the “Out” tray of my E61.

I’ve reset the phone once, to clear anything that I might have missed, and always installed the latest version of the Mail for Exchange software available in the Nokia web site

I’m kind of pissed off with this, as I counted on Nokia doing their homework, and working really hard on avoiding this, if they ever wanted to get market share by luring away people using Windows Phone Edition devices or Smartphones. As someone else said, they can sure guess most of us are working out of Outlook / Exchange platforms out there, and expect no-brainer out-of-the box performance? A major misstep.

The bad thing about Microsoft, you cannot get rid of them. The good thing, much more often than not, their stuff works seamlessly well together.

Any hints before I seriously consider selling the phone right away and get a Motorola Q somewhere?

    I forgot to say,

I have different phone numbers from different countries, as my job takes me to different places in the world. I have a Chinese SIM (China Telecom). With my China Telecom thing, I was able to send emails from my E61. The problem described has to do with my Bouygues Telecom (French!) SIM. Is there something China Telecom activates that Bouygues do not?

Please bear in mind that, when working on Smartphones, I can seamlessly Sync using either SIM chip… This is intriguing (and annoying!!)

  62. Matt Says:

Mail for Exchange works great (once you’ve got certs sorted out etc!!). My only two wish list items would be :-

    1. Support for Connection Groups so it will automatically switch from WLAN (when at home) to GPRS (out and about)
    2. Support for calendar meeting requests.

If we can get those two features I’ll be a very happy man :-)

    Hi guys,
I guess I can install Mail for Exchange onto E70, but I can’t find the setup on the Net
    Can you help?

  66. admin Says:

    Teimur,
There is some good documentation on this site:
    http://www.businesssoftware.nokia.com/mail_for_exchange_downloads.php

However, you need to ask your IT guy for the following:

    Exchange Server Address

Domain (not the same as your URL)

Your standard exchange password and userid.

Drop me a note if you have more questions.
    Cheers

  67. Marc Says:

When I save my profile, it gets stuck on “Savings Mail for Exchange Profile”. It just keeps thinking but never connects.

Is something set wrong. I got it to work once but then it stopped.

    Thanks-

  68. Will Neale Says:

Marc - I suffered the same problem repeatedly and it drove me up the wall (rebooting is the only option to recover from this).

However, I have since found that this only occurs when selecting ‘Use secure connection’ - I suggest that change this to ‘No’ and you should find this problem disappears.

    Will

  69. Shamai Says:

Will Neale! You are my hero!
I was climbing up the walls and crawling on the ceiling as I had similar problem as described by Marc above and couldn’t figure out what was the problem. Also installed the RoadSync - and had exactly same problem.
Until I saw your tip here - which solved all, and now it works perfect!
    Thanks, body.

  70. Noam Says:

    Hello,

I am using the latest version of RoadSync on my Nokia E61.
When the RoadSync is set to Direct Push, after few hours (usually at least 7 hours) the Menu key & END key are not functional!
I can’t access the main menu screen and when going to other menu functions, pressing the END key wont affect…
I’ll have to reboot my phone in order to solve it for the next 7 hours…
If the RoadSync is set to Manual this problem does not happen at all.
Have you ever experienced such issue?
    Thanks,

    Noam

The connection via Bluetooth to my laptop does not seem to be working properly… any ideas?? the phone does see the laptop via bluteooth but cannot seem to synch calendar and contact info…

(we are not currently using MS Exchange server at work, so not trying to synchronize emails at this point)…

  72. H Says:

Had the E61 for a day and have a couple of questions ?

1 Mail for exchange doesnt seem to let me sync contacts or calendar.

2 I cant get the access point group to work with anything.

3 Has anyone tried the intellisync client ?

    Cheers

  73. admin Says:

    Hi H,
    Regarding 2:
Check your settings so that you have set up Mail For Exchange to sync your calendar and contacts. It is supported and works for me.
    Cheers

  74. H Says:

    Hi Admin,

The problem is it doesnt seem to save it when i specify that i want calendar and contacts to synch. It’s driving me nuts.

  75. admin Says:

    Hi H,
I press lightly on the joystick and it will toggle the Sync Calendar from “Yes” to “No” the same with Sync Contacts, Sync Email etc.

Can you change the settings in any of the preferences? If you can’t I would consider removing and then re-installing M4E.
    Just my two cents

  76. Bo Says:

Is it possible to sunc up mail (via Mail for Exchange) while in offline mode?? In other words is it possible to do it over WLAN?
    Thanks

  77. Amar Says:

    Hi folks (especially admin),
I got the E61 today and simply love it. I have the latest version of Mail for Exchange, and have been able to set it up. Calendar and Contacts are syncing and I am able to send email. The BIGGEST problem - I am NOT receiving any email on my phone, the logs say 0 received. Has anyone else faced this issue? I have a Pocket PC where the syncing works perfectly! I am not sure what the issue is here, i’m reading everything available on the net. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

  78. Amar Says:

I thought I should give an update. Its not a problem with the phone or setting! Mail for Exchange only supports the “Inbox” folder and since it had no new mail, it wasn’t downloading anything. When I woke up in the morning I saw a new mail and was surprised. All night long the phone was syncing with the server and finally downloaded one mail when it was received! This sucks since I have server side settings on my mail. Thankfully my company supports IMAP!!! So I am using Mail for Exchange to sync calendar and contacts and NOT mail (how ironical!) and using the regular E61 email client for IMAP email. This also lets me configure Access Groups unlike MfE!

  79. Espen Says:

Please can somebody help me, I am desperate by now. Have been trying to figure this one out for a week now. Nobody else has asked the question.

I don’t know if something is wrong with my mobile or what it is, but my problem is: What do I do if I want to sync the phone right now? Lets say somebody just sent me an email and I need to download e-mails and don’t want to wait for the scheduled update?

The only way of syncing my E61/e-mails is menu>>installed>>Mail for Exchange>>current status. Surely there must be a quicker way.

The user guide says I will get an option to download e-mails if I click messages>>Mail for Exchange, but that is not the case, at least not on my phone.

Is there a shortcut or something I can do to make updating especially my e-mail when I am in a hurry?

  80. Raj Says:

As far as I understand, so long as you are connected to the Internet via your carrier, the connection to Exchange is always on with Mail for Exchange.

That said, there is a sync schedule with this program.

If you want to use the PUSH-Email features of Exchange 2003 SP2, you must upgrade to RoadSync.

On a seperate note, I find that Mail for Exchange is sometimes quicker than my Outlook attached to the Exchange Server using RPC over HTTPS so your issue could very likely be a data carrier issue.

Ensure that you use the EDGE/GPRS connection on your phone (not WAP) and not something like your WiFi.

  81. Espen Says:

    >so long as you are connected to the Internet via your carrier, the >connection to Exchange is always on with Mail for Exchange.

Couldt that be a setting? My phone don’t update e-mail when I am…lets say on the web.

Your comment about being on EDGE/GPRS, was that directed at me? Because I have wlan at work and at home and use wlan whereever that is possible. (I got SmartRoaming)

Still, no matter what connection, it’s still a lot of clicks do sync my phone outside scheduled times. There must be something quicker (like pressing M button for instant web)

  82. Will Neale Says:

Raj - it is not correct to say that you need to upgrade to Roadsync to use Exhange SP2 functionality; this is utilised by Mail for Exchange.

  83. Raj Says:

Dear Will - I stand corrected.

Dear Espen - the issue may be the server (not being at SP2) but at the same time, I’ve never used MFE with smartroaming. I do know that the connection to the Exchange server has to be constant so that may be the issue. It works very quickly on my phone which uses the carrier’s EDGE connection.

Another possibility could be your WLAN router which is dropping the connection after too long of an idle time. Just a thought.

  84. Espen Says:

    Ty for your reply Raj.

Still trying to figure out how I can “force a sync” outside the sheduled times (every 30 minutes at peak hours) without going deep into a menu.

  85. Raj Saxena Says:

    Guys,
After having purchased an E-61 which came with firmware 1.x. The Nokia Mail for Exhcnage (ver 1.30) would download and work once. This is over Edge and Wifi. It would then decide it doesnt need to work any more.

I finally upgraded my firmware, did a hard reset. Installed only the MFE 1.30 again and no luck.

i tried the Beta version of Roadsync 3.0 Granted it is beta I had a hard lock up. Not once but many….*Keep in mind it is still beta software).

I finally said screw this let me just buy Road Sync 2.0 and see how it is. Yes it is pricey $100 but you get what you pay for.

I installed it and it is working like a charm.

So don’t waste your time, if it’s corp email you need pay for it.

Nokia you guys should package Roadsync like SE does with the P990I or include your Wireless sync commercial package.

    Hi all

I have implemented Mail for Exchange as a standard for our remote mail access. I am using version 1.03 and it appears to work and then all of a sudden it gives an error message “Server requires secure connection. Change Profile > Connection > Secure connection to yes” even though it is set to yes. When I force a sync, it works, however the scheduled sync fails with this error.

I have tried all over and cannot find any help, therefore am hopefull as this forum appears to have the right people.

    Thank you

  95. Ed Says:

I am struggling to configure Mail for Exchange on a Nokia E61 to connect to my company’s Exchange Server.

We use Outlook 2003’s option to connect using HTTP, using a proxy server that is specified in Connection | Exchange Proxy Settings in the account configuration dialogue.

I am unclear if I need to enter details of this proxy server into M4E, and if so, where in the M4E settings; should it precede the name of the server in the Server field?

My other query is that my username to log on to Outlook is XXX/username. Do I enter my username in the same format in M4E and leave the domain field blank, or do I delete the XXX/ and instead enter the XXX into the domain field?

Apologies in advance if these are very basic queries, but the M4E documentation is limited to say the least. Any other guidance appreciated! Thanks!

  96. admin Says:

    Fabrizio,
I once encountered a strange bug that prevented me from syncing my mail beyond a certain mail in my Exchange inbox. When I deleted that email from my PC it started to sync again.

    Hi Ed,
It seems to me that your questions can only be answered by your MS Exchange admin. Save yourself the trouble and ask the admin.
All the settings are slightly unique for each company and set up.
    Mine are:
    “Exchange username”
    “Exchange server address”
    “Domain”

I’ve found someone at Cingular at the product team willing to listen to suggestions/critique regarding the limited implementation of mail for exchange.

I am personally of the opinion that if Nokia wants to compete with Microsoft it should at least offer the same functionality. Currently this is not the case. Also, bugs need to be fixed in a timely fashion. If this is not possible a workaround needs to be suggested

I am solliciting your input on what functionality is missing, specially in regards with a comparison to Exchange Activesync.

Self signed certificates generated by SBS2003 are currently not being recognized by the E62, maybe also other phones. A workaround is in the works.

    Missing functionality:
    Global Address List;
    Sync of other folders besides the Inbox;

    What else?

  99. Dee Says:

My first sync is seeming to take forever! Can anyone tell me how long it should last? I do not have many emails in my inbox as I tend to file them away, and the contacts are in the Global Address List (so, I am not synching and overwriting my contacts on my cell phone). As with calendar activities, yes, there are a few… but I have set the limit to 2 weeks.

    Any ideas folks?

I am not sure if other have experienced the same or I am doing sometihng different

  109. ulf Says:

    Fabrizio and others,

Yes, I have encountered similar problems, and think it is related to the Exchange connection using SSL and a private certificate. M4E is asking for confirmation to accept the unknown certificate *each time* it connects, and if not manually confirmed within a time limit, M4E seems to be hung forever. Only a hard reset and re-installation of M4E will make it run again.

Question is then how to install the private certificate? According to the E61 help file, it should be as simple as copying the certificate using file manager, find it and save it. But I don’t get any save option for my .cer or .der files, the phone claims it to be an unknown file type that cannot be opened…?

  110. Gaz Says:

for those having problems connecting on a non ssl connection, i found the cause which fixed it for me….

go to your access point setting for your mobile provider, and go to the advanced settings, delete any proxy server..

Further to this issue above. We now have several E61 phones in our company. Periodically we get a phone that is effected by the problem described. I have not been able to resolve the problem consistently. Even reformating the phone often does not fix the issue. The problem will effect the phone even whilst other phones work with the same Exchange server and the same carrier.

What I have found is interesting however. If I go to http://www.whatismyip.com or some such site I can get the IP address assigned by the carrier to the phone. I can then use this to look at error events in the exchange logs at C:\windows\system32\logfiles\httperr

What I find in the error logs is that the connection suffers an error called Timer_MinBytesPerSecond

With relation to this error I found the following article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/820729

Which describes the error as follows:-

The connection expired because the client was not receiving a response at a reasonable speed. The response send rate was slower than the default of 240 bytes/sec.

So it seems that something in the phone, combined with the dynamics of the carrier and the exchange server cause the connection to run too slow. It would seem to me that Nokia could overcome this problem by assigning some more tolerant timeout settings in their “Mail for Exchange” product.

  119. Terje Says:

What I have found is interesting however. If I go to http://www.whatismyip.com or some such site I can get the IP address assigned by the carrier to the phone. I can then use this to look at error events in the exchange logs at C:\windows\system32\logfiles\httperr

Another slight update. If I go to http://www.whatismyip.com to reveal the IP address of the phone what I find is that every phone in our company (the all use the same carrier) reports as having the same public IP address. This suggests that our carrier is running some form of reverse NAT.

Can anybody tell me if this behaviour is normal and what impact it has on “Mail for Exchange”. I can confirm that we have several phones that this morning were all working (ie email was flowing) and they all reported the same public IP address. So it is obviously workable to some extent.

This is infuriating behaviour from Nokia - does anyone have a copy of 1.3.0 lying around that they can send me?

    Appreciated / Will.

    Hi

I’ve got MailForExchange 1.5.0 but can’t seem to get past “System error. Please try again later.” error that others mention.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to solve this problem?

“System error. Please try again later.” indicates on my phone that the E61 did not establish a network connection with the current access point.

Any1 found a fix to the “Sync while roaming” problem on 1.5.x ? I can’t get Mail For Exchange to work while I’m not associated with my home access point even if sync while roaming is activated.

I might be out of the topic here but am using an E50. Would like to know if anyone here knows of any applications that I can sync my Entourage for Mac with my Nokia device.

    Thanks very much!

I’ve seen 2 people post previously that they are getting this error: “server requires secure connection”. I too am getting the same error even though I already have it set to “secure connection” yes. No matter what I try, uninstall, format, re-install etc nothing works, same error always pops up wether I’m syncing manually or automatically, can’t figure this out. hopefully someone can help.

    Hi,

To fix the “Mail for exchange server does not support always on sync schedule” message, you need to install Exchange SP2 on the server.

i have installed exchange server as per the instructions but the phone shows connecting but then nothing happens. it doesnt sync or anything, just says connecting and stays like that. if i switch the phone off and on then it show idle, if i then start the sync process then it just hangs on connecting again, why is it not syncing ?
