Changing The Voicemail Number
Setting up the voicemail number is something most of us only do once per device. If you for some reason need to change your voicemail number it can be hard to find the setting.
A friend of mine entered the wrong voicemail number when setting up his Nokia E61 and then spent hours trying to find where to change this. You might think that the settings is part of the general "phone" setting but it is not. The settings is tucked away under "organizer".
Once you find it you can easily change your voicemail number.

Perhaps your friend should have used the handbook

Yeah, I ran into the same problem. Thanks for the simple tip - especially for those of us that don’t RTFM.
On the topic, for those with Cingular, what number should we use for voice mail? If I use my actual cell number it seems to work, but is this the standard voice mail number for Cingular?

There’s an easier way to do this if you haven’t already set it. Just hold down 1 and it will ask you what you’d like to set it to.

I also have Cingular and I just enetered my own cell number (including “1″) and that works for me.
Manuals are good but I truly believe that by using logic as your guide, and a bit of trial and error, you should be able to figure things out. To have the voicemail preferences under “organizer” instead of “phone” seems so random to me.

It’s what happens when you hold down “1″ and they type in the wrong numebr that’s messed up! Cingular also uses voicemail dial in numbers that are different than the own number. Not sure where I can find those numbers. Anyone out there know the answer?

So does Fido in Canada. Check their website - that’s where I found mine.

I’m in NYC with Cingular and my VM # is 19084630020, which is by the way *not* my phone number

LOL. I won’t call it.
Thanks for clarifying everyone!

I have Cellular One and I have to dial my own number then enter 4 digit pin code and then press 1 to listen.
So I have entered P for pauses. 1-234-123-1234PP2134P1
It works by pressing one button!

Hi Waldi,
If you are using Mail For Exchange, BlackBerry etc it might take some time, or until the next time you connect to the mail server, until they actually disappear.

You can call your carrier and ask for your ‘Voicemail Pilot Number’ which (although you can use your own number) is region specific. It is best to use the Pilot number as it is NOT a long distance call from ANYWHERE whereas if you are outside your service area calling your own number will incurr long distance charges…

Hi Dennis,
thanks for the suggestion - that sounds much better than to use your own number.
Cheers

Thank goodness for this site. I just got my E70 firmware upgrade and it deleted the VMBox #. I walking from the Nokia store when I was checking my VM and didn’t know the box# so I used my cell# figuring I could change it later.
I looked for over an hour in all the setting and even tried putting the SIM in my old phone and trying to change it there to no avail. Why would they put the VM # in Organizer instead of Messages or Settings? Anyway, thanks!

Thanks so much! I also spent over an hour trying to figure it out! You would think that they could have made this easy to edit in the speed dial file folder!!! Thanks for posting this.

DEC 29 –THANKS for the tip! I accidentally changed my speed dial [#1] voice mail. When you dial voice mail and change it to speakerphone while prompted for the password it sends a tone and *&%! it up….Also, I have made some mistakes entering numbers because e61 disallows [right?] putting spaces of dashes in the phone number entry! —–> Steve in NYC.

I had the same problem on the Nokia E61i. I downloaded the correct voicemail number, but it came up as no such number when I pressed one to speed dial. As you say it’s nowhere in the handbook and I spent hours searching (Nokia help closed over w/e). I knew that dialling 123 would connect me to voicemail so at least I could get to it that way.
Using your guide was very helpful, but there is no ‘Organiser’ folder on the E61i!
For the E61i you need to go to Tools and then across to Voice Mail folder, click Options and the ‘change voicemail number’ will come up. I then put in 123 (not the full number as supplied by Orange) and it now works.

If you lost your voicemail number you can request it using a service command. Just dial *#62#. The phone will prompt you if you want to change the voicemail status and the left softkey will say “Number.” Selecting Number will show you the mailbox number.

I have a new problem with my E61i, I press the 1 button and nothing happens. I can’t dial numbers at all. Just hangs there. Anybody seen this?

@ Daniel–
Cute comment, but believe it or not, the manual is wrong.
it tells you to go to a menu option that does not exist.

I know I hate finding stuff in this phone and I’ve had it for around 2 years now. I wish they made more use of the qwerty to design a search function.
