Automatic Key Lock Application for Nokia E61
Petteri Muilu has done us Nokia E61 owners (all E-series devices) a great favor with the creation of his automatic key lock application for the Nokia E61.
Not only is it a great application but it is also free. (Donation accepted, and is encouraged).
The application is simple and elegant. It automatically starts when you turn on your Nokia E61 and runs in the background. You can set the time before the key lock starts from 10 to 240 seconds.

The feature is built in. Go to Menu - tools, settings, securiity, Phone and Sim, and Autolock Period.
Click User Define, and insert the amount that you want it to autolock it.

Nice tool. But I cant seems to find the set inactivity time option. Anyone can help?
July 21st, 2006 at 7:08 am
I was delighted to learn about this application because I am one of those people who does forget to turn on the keylock and in the past several people have ended up being called by my phone and then talking into my pocket.

I’ve coined a new term from my experience in my pre-phone-lock days. “Pocket spam.” Try pressing the top left key multiple times (presuming you have it at the default setting of ‘Notes’) and see what happens. It will send the first note in your notes list as an SMS to your first contact in your address book. I’ve added a dummy contact to my addr book which is in the number one position for those times when I don’t lock my phone its trying to send out pocketspam.

By the way Daniel, I think the difference between what is built in to the security settings and the installable utility is that to unlock the phone using the Autolock requires a 4 digit number to unlock the phone. Seems to be a true lock for security purposes vs just preventing random calls & SMS messages.

Dinooo, to set the inactivity time option, go to Menu->Installations->AutoLock

Is it possible to activate the lock with a button? i.e. I’m done with the phone, go into sleep and lock, rather then wait the 15-30 seconds for it to do it itself?
July 25th, 2006 at 8:32 am
Just click the power button on the front and select lock keys - maybe there is a shortcut key?
July 26th, 2006 at 8:16 am
Yes there is a shortcut. Press the left top key and then the function key (lower left key) and it locks… Fastest way to lock if you are wanting to force lock the phone and dont want to wait for the autolock.

Thanks! Coming from a treo650, I was hoping for something like hitting the red ‘End’ button which locks the keyboard and turns the display off. Locking the keyboard is one aspect, but the other is to go into sleep mode.

This app is good. But it slows down your phone’s responds.
And now, I’m not using this app anymore

July 30th, 2006 at 9:27 am
Hi e61 Fan,
Not sure if it works on the n73. I might be a feature of the E-series only.

Nokia E61 Smartphone…
This morning, I’ve got some business on Sand Hill Road. 3000 Sand Hill Road in Menlo Park, to be exact. Entrepreneurs know this address well, as there is a large clump of VC’s in the circle here, spread among four buildings, and it’s …

This program locks the keypad automatically, replacing the 2-key stroke sequence upper left and lower left keys. However, it seems to lock very quickly, much faster than the 240 seconds setting that is the maximum delay we can set. I suspect that the E61 calculates much faster than whatever unit this software was written on. Correct?
August 6th, 2006 at 9:42 pm
Hi Odessey,
I would guess that the problem is with the application. It’s a shareware… but I think it’s pretty accurate for a shorter time such as 15-20 seconds
August 7th, 2006 at 3:03 am
I installed this on my Nokia E70 and had a problem - you are unable to unlock the keypad when the device is in QWERTY mode. Without this app, the device automatically unlocks the keys when you expand it into QWERTY mode, and won’t lock the keys while it’s in this mode. However, this app will lock your keys when it’s in this mode, and you have to first close the device to unlock the keys.

There is a built in key lock - identical to the Sony Ericsson key lock feature (have one), where you hit two buttons in sequence - First hit the top left soft key (above the green “call” button) and then the start (*) key on the number pad. This sequence locks and also unlocks the keys. It doesn’t matter what the soft key is programmed to, long as you hit the * button afterwards, it will lock the keys for you.

I am facing the same problem that nhappy is facing and it just happened on its own today. The handset locked itself and forced me to change the lock code and began autolocking. The max time I can set it to is 5 mins. I can’t seem to disable autolock either.
March 28th, 2007 at 9:13 pm
I figured out the issue with the Autolock that Me and nharry have been facing. I uninstalled the blackberry client and the problem went away.
Strangely, I had the blackberry client installed for quite sometime now without the 5 mins lockout setting. The setting got activated when I changed my phone lock code. Very Strange. However, I am glad that the issue has now been resolved.

AHHHHHH why didn’t I get this app sooner. I just found out I send an email to a main supplier and the competition. The phone came so close to being spare parts. Why isn’t this standard. Such an obvious feature.
Still a great phone but AHHHHHH WHYYYYYYY

Bowie,
Mail For Exchange, the client you are referring to, will lock down your contact information etc. by putting an autolock feature on the device. If you de-install Mail For Exchange, this feature will still remain. The only way of getting rid of it, as far as I know, is to back up your data and then perform a hard reset.
Cheers

Not having an auto lock was a huge source of irritation for me and the security lock provided is a pain!
Thanks so much.
Cheers

Fantastic - finally someone has solved the only annoying thing about my E65 - big kiss!
January 18th, 2008 at 9:18 am
It will not work on a E65. If you repower the E65 the icon has changed and you can not restart/change the parameters!
There is a mix in phone lock (with password) that you can set in the unit and simply (automatic) keylock…that you can not set in the E65, also not with this freeware apparently.
