Salling Clicker for Nokia E61
I first came across the Salling Clicker back in 2003 when I was using a SE T68 and was dying to find any additional usage of Bluetooth in addition to BT headsets.
I was amazed back then by the ingenuity of the application. For those who have not yet had the pleasure of using the Salling Clicker - it is an application for your mobile device by which you can control applications on your computer. In short, it extends the capabilities of a very powerful remote control of your computer to your Nokia E61, and other devices.
*A great deal* has happened since 2003 and the Salling Clicker is well worth a closer examination. There are a number of alternatives to the Salling Clicker - Control Freak - being one of them but for this blog entry I will focus on Salling Clicker.
Although the native client for Symbian S60 3rd edition is not yet available you can still use the Salling Clicker on your Nokia E61 and other E-Series devices. Being impatient by nature and not being able to wait for the native application I used the Java version for Salling Clicker on Nokia E61 and it worked great.
There are two components to install. An application on your PC or Mac and the Java application for your Nokia E61. The Java application is available as an over the air download from http://wap.salling.com
The set up was easy. I Installed the jave application on my Nokia E61 and the necessary application on both my PC and my Mac. I could connect to both computers and control them without a glitch.
Depending on your computing platform the applications you can control from your Nokia E61 using Salling Clicker will differ slightly. On my PowerBook I could control applications such as iTunes, iPhoto, Mail, PowerPoint Presentations, DVD and QuickTime player etc.

Salling Clicker lets you launch applications and control them from within. But to call the application a "remote control" doesn't give it justice.
The real benefit comes from the information flowing from the application on your Nokia E61 to your computer and back. For an example, after I start playing a CD or playlist on my computer Salling Clicker will display the current track on my Nokia E61.
Another example of this two way communication is the ability to edit playlist from the device or instantly edit track ratings while listening to the songs.
Salling Clicker is also very expendable so if you are interested in writing scripts - the sky is the limit for this application. The application is well worth its price of $23.95.

what’s the different from Salling Clicker to Control Freak application on PC?

The Java version is slightly shoddy, here’s hoping the 3rd ed version is coming out soon

This is totally unrelated, but I couldn’t help noticing the silver triangle on your ’screen protector’. Did you know you can actually peel off that triangle? That would leave you with a complete unobstructed view of you screen (and a free screen protector ;))

Has anyone heard of an application that would allow use of the IR on the e61 as a TV remote?
July 24th, 2006 at 11:14 am
Bearnie,
I didn’t know that! Thank you so much for pointing this out
July 24th, 2006 at 6:48 pm
No problem at all. Just spreading the love

can’t seem to connect my phone with my mac. I have sailing clicker running on both. Which model did you use to connect? N70 or N90?
July 25th, 2006 at 1:30 am
i’m not able to connect my E70 with salling clicker, but i’ve find another program that can control winamp or WMP or power point on your PC.
BEMUSED

Bernie, all: it’s also a viable option to actully remove the plastic and enable you to experience the quality of the display as it was meant to be
July 25th, 2006 at 4:55 am
Neither bemused nor control freak will install on an E-61. I’m a long-time Clicker user, and can’t wait til the wifi connectivity is added to the Symbian client.

oh I just discovered that if you hold the function button and then hit ctrl it turns bluetooth on and off - (dunno if that’s be mentioed here).

Use the phone without a screen protector? Never
July 25th, 2006 at 11:05 pm
I hear a rumor that Ed actually devirginized his screen and is now reading email and reviewing applications on an unprotected (gasp) screen! Is it true, Ed?
July 25th, 2006 at 11:43 pm
That is true. I removed the silver triangle per Bernie’s excellent suggestion. However, with my thick fingers this was a bit trickier than expected.
In order to remove the triangle I had to partly remove the screem protector - it wasn’t pretty. Dust and dirt got stuck and made it loose its stickiness. In the end a friend just ripped it off. Like a band-aid….

I got the triangle off as well but it means the corner is starting to peel…. Anyone able to recommend a good screen protector?
July 26th, 2006 at 3:06 am
I took mine completely off too. So i went round the shop to look around for screen protectors and ended up buying one for SE900 instead. It’s not a perfect pit but it covers about 98% of the screen.
The other 2% is the sides but you can hardly see it anyways.

Just got new E61 from 02 which came with two ‘themes’ Black on blue or white on blue - both are rubbish when trying to read type in daylight.
All themes I have seen are a bit nasty. Been advised (by Ed) OrangeBlue theme was good although I haven’t seen it.
Would anyone be able to send to me the plain Nokia theme - white background with black text?
E61 virgin…

If the orange theme is the one i’m thinking of it’s your next best bet while you try to find it - that is black on white the only orange bit i notice is the title part. Even sim-unlocked mine came with some horrible background that made the screen difficult to read.

Here is the link to the theme repository on this blog (with download links)

Maybe we should pay Roman Keller (http://www.romankeller.ch) and ask him to create themes for the E61?
I totally agree with Johnny Z - 99% of all themes available for the E61 are mediocre.
I even tried mangothemes.com - but they’re too eye-candy like. I want a clean, sleek theme.
July 28th, 2006 at 2:20 am
If you look at the theme/interface on the Nokia video
(http://europe.nokia.com/A4145130) - it looks clean and functional. Thats all it needs to be. Why doesn’t the phone come with this and why isn’t it available anywhere?
There must be an easier route than redesign - or maybe not!
I’ll check out Roman Keller - sounds good.
Thanks

Hi everyone…
I know this is not completely relevant but does anyone know of software that would allow me to play avi movies directly on my e-61?
Thanks alot.

Damn, these comments are most off-topic…

Salling Clicker doesn’t work for me. The client and PC app won’t talk to each other. The PC app says “To connect from a device, enable Bluetooth or TCP/IP connections” and the client says “Salling clicker does not appear to be launched on the computer”. Bluetooth IS enabled (and the devices paired), and Salling Clicker IS running on the PC. Yet more bad software that expects users to be mind readers and work out what stupid error messages mean…

When i try to connect my E61 with my mac it asks for the model and the E61 isnt on the scroll down menu… what should i put it as?
August 31st, 2006 at 3:38 am
I tried to connect my E61 to my pc but it apparently it won’t connect. I noticed the screenshot saying “Allow Salling Clicker to to use connectivity application?” prompt does not appear when Im trying to connect. Is there a setting that I should configure to allow Salling clicker to use connectivity application?

[...] One program for the E61 that everyone seems to be raving about is Salling Clicker. Although the Symbian S60 3rd Edition version has yet to be released, E-series shows you how to install Salling Clicker on both your computer (both PC and Mac compatible) and the E61. [...]

Just got it and it works great!!!

[...] There is no secret that I am a big fan of Salling Clicker. I’ve written about the existing java version as well as the beta version of the upcoming Symbian version. The closed beta of the next version of Salling Clicker reached a new level with the third (closed) beta release of the software. Hey man, im also looking for a E61 program to use like a remote control for the TV. I mean, my friends have watches, PDAs that can do this. So why cant the all powerfull E61 do this ?
And bugger this clicker prog. It seems stupid.
April 22nd, 2007 at 12:05 pm
I was wondering if anybody knew whether the E61 had the ability to connect to Salling Clicker with Wi-Fi? Cause I know v3.0.1 has the capabilities…
