Calcium - A Better Calculator For The Nokia E61

Let me publicly profess how much I admire the two geniuses behind the free calculator Calcium. The application is so simple and smart - a real delight to use. It makes me wish that I would have thought of this.

Not only is the application stylish but it provides the best usage of the joystick on the Nokia E61 I have seen so far. While most applications only use the joystick as a means to navigate on the screen Calcium incorporates actions into the joystick! Very clever. Why didn't I think of that… ;-)

The application has assigned a joystick movement to each of the four basic arithmetic operations. Moving the joystick up represents addition, down represents subtraction etc.

The application is not as advanced as the built in calculator but much easier to use. My major complaint with the native application is the number of clicks/movements to perform a simple calculation. I dislike math as it is but being forced to move the cursor up, down and sideways makes me really irritated.

Not counting entering the numbers it is a simple 2 clicks/movement procedure to calculate 2.1x 89 = using Calcium. You just  enter 2.1, move the joystick to the right (multiplication) enter 89 and press in the joystick - voila!

However, using the native calculator it takes 6 clicks/movements to perform the same calculation.

Head over to Mtvoid and take a look at Calcium and their other product - Controlfreak 2.

all i can say is it looks like…… IPOD! (like everything else… lol)

but, yeah it looks like a great replacement to the current calculator. however i’m still looking for something that does scientific calculations, much like what i have in my palm t|x (which i’m replacing with my E61). can this one do that?

    great post!

  2. alper Says:

It gave an error saying ’sis not supported’ when i tried to install it over my E61 :(

This one is really nice… The design is great and It’s so easy to use !

As usual, thanks again for finding for us these kind of tools :-)

Something which does percentages would be useful too.

Nice… is it made on FlashLite?

  6. Beppe Says:

Smart, but not so usefull for percentage calcules.

Yes, the native calculator has more functions than Calcium but for the basic four operations Calcium is much easier to use. Also, the UI is as “lickable” as the iPod ;-)

Looks like too many people have tried to get the application today. I’m getting 509 errors for b/w limit exceeded from the calcium site. Next time I’ll be the first to d/l your recommended software.

Great! But, maybe I am missing something really obvious here. How do you enter a decimal point? I can’t enter something as simple as 2.1, when I try I just get 21 as the program seems to ignore the decimal point (full stop) on the keyboard.

  11. admin Says:

    Hi Simon,
    To enter a decimal just use the # key. 2#1 = 2.1.
    Cheers

  12. Maclean Patrick Says:

This is replacing the calculator on my phone. Though I must say that it is a bit out-of-the-norm to use the # for the decimal. I would readily press the fullstop.

  13. admin Says:

I agree Patrick, I had to read the manual to figure that one out - it wasn’t logical to me to use the pound key for a decimal.

Hi, I am the programmer of Calcium. I managed to get an E61 for testing and fixed the decimal point bug. I have also made a customised version for QVGA devices like the E61 so the operations dial doesn’t look so ugly (due to resizing). The link is:

Hi! Calcium is really great app, but in the new, for nokia e61-optimized version is still 1 bug: no 3 needs still pressing a blue button:-(

  22. john Says:

Funny thing with Calcuim. After I installed it on my E61 I tried it out. I can not seem to enter numbers. The joystick seems to function, but pressing the 0-9 keys on the keypad only results in a beep. Am I doing something really stupid?

    Tks

  23. john Says:

I submitted the earlier reply stating that I could not enter numbers into Calcuim. I later found the optimized version of Calcuim for the E61, installed it and all is great now. Tks

  24. netpet Says:

Has anyone seen a calculator who knows mathematical rules like calculating ^ before x and / and before + and - without using (). Calcium doesnt support this (as many other calculators for the series).

    Any suggestions ?
