Nokia E61 Browser - Full Fledge Browser Experience on the E61
Nokia E61 Browser
The last couple of days I have been using the web browser that comes bundled with the Nokia E61 a lot. I've been stuck in training for a week so I relied on the web browser, connecting through WiFi, to catch up on news and web based mail. I've been pleasantly surprised over the ease of use of both the WiFi feature and the browsing experience.
The first thing that struck me was how similar the experience is with a good, reliable PC based browser and the Nokia E61's browser. So far I have been disappointed with mobile web browsing because of all the comprises you are faced when using a mobile device. The Nokia E61 browser is a non-nonsense, no comprise web browser that gives you the closest experience possible to a PC browser.
The browser is based on Apple's Safari/KHTML's engines. It's fast. Faster than similar browsers I have used on the Treo and faster than the Opera browser. It is also very feature rich without being sluggish or complicated. The browser supports dynamic HTML. So dynamic menus, rollovers and scripted actions such as AJAX applications works! I tried it with Google Maps and it works great. It was cool to use the Nokia E61 and Google Maps. I'll never get lost again…
The most important industry standards are also supported W3C's HTML, XHTML 1.0, DOM, CSS, SVG-Tiny, SSL, Flash Lite and audio. There is a download manager that effectively handles downloads by recognizing the file type and taking the appropriate actions.
It is very easy to navigate web pages using a very neat feature - a pointer/cursor that is controlled with the 5-way joystick on the device. It is also nice to see that the browser preserves the original page layout. No longer do you have to suffer by mobile browser messing up page layout. The browser has many nifty features.
One of my favourites is the visual history functionality. It is a cakewalk to go back and forth between sites you have visited. They are preserved as thumbnails so that you can see what pages you have visited.

Another favourite is the easy navigation of web pages by using a miniature image of the web page and thereby reducing the amount of scrolling. You can easily see where you are on the web page.

I was also pleased to see the many robust features you expect on a PC based browser such as pop-up blocking, image zoom-in and save, support for RSS feeds and changeable font size.

There is even a a dynamic search functionality that let's you search text within a web page. This features is very fast and works as you type, taking you to directly to the accurate part of the web page.

Yeah the S60 Web browser is very nice although I miss the Save page function (the Services WAP browser has it, strange…) and the possibility to select text from a page to copy/paste…

I like the browser, except when it hangs — which is pretty easy to do. Just go to http://www.earthlink.net and click on “web mail”, or go to http://www.iherb.com and click on “my account”. Both of these will hang the e61 browser. Problem seems to be something with secure sites — maybe something with the certificate. I duuno.

How can I delete an email account? I made a mistake and selected IMAP4 instead of a POP. The unit will not allow me to edit and select POP and I have been unable to edit the settings or simply delete the acount.
Lastly, on my business account I am able to receive email but my new messages and replys are still in the oubox. The error message is internet server is not found. Your help is very much appreciated.

Hi Tony,
To delete an email account:
Menu>Message>Options>Settings>E-mail, select the email account you want to delete >option>delete
Have you confirmed that your outgoing mail server settings are correct for the business account? It could be as simple as an error in the settings.

Hi everyone
do you know any tricks to save websites’ passwords and usernames using the Nokia web browser? I tried Opera 8.5 (which provides a sort of password manager) but apparently it crashes frequently and, honestly, I do prefer Nokia browser more.
Any help would be much appreciated!!!!
Cheers

The only issue I have is that I can’t clear my history. I set it not to keep history, cleared the cache and removed my browsing history. Still the same. Any ideas?

Hi, can’t see anything in the website containing flash files, just a boat like icon. Is there any update that I can install to see flash content on the website. The website that I wanted to see needs flash 6.0, please help!
September 26th, 2006 at 12:13 am
Hi Atul,
i’m also facing this problem of the flash content turning into a small boat. Any gurus from the community to enlighten? Is there other possibilty to view web based video files like the ones in youtube also?
September 28th, 2006 at 12:25 pm
Hi everyone. I’ve had my E60 for 3 weeks now, I’m actually replying using the phone’s built in browser and an encrypted wi-fi connection to a wireless router, it’s a joy to use! As far as flash programs not working is concerned (boat symbol appearing) this is because “Flash Lite” is not a fully functional flash program. It can open streaming radio, or play some video files (i’m not sure what file extensions) but at the moment we can’t see embedded flash in web pages. Hopefully they’ll release an improved version which can deal with swf. files on websites soon! I find it useful to have a freeware screenshot application open in the background when web browsing, so whenever I want to save text or photos which the browser won’t facilitate I only need to press the shortcut and it saves a perfect copy of the screen on my memory card- ever time I press it! Does anyone know how to clear the browsing history? Thanks
October 6th, 2006 at 1:56 pm
to clear browser history. go to browser- select options- select bookmarks- select autobookmarks- select options and you can clear from there.
Go nokia E62!

Hi, thanks for this great site! I have an E61 from T-Mob with firmware 1.60~ which is their own (NSU says no new updates available….). This is quite annoying as T-Mob don’t seem to have a clue about the new Nokia 2.0~ firmware version - are there any T-Mobile users here and how do you deal with this firmware issue?
Another question: I am not sure I have minimaps installed. I can see it enabled as an option in my browser’s settings. When I browse a webpage, I thought I was supposed to get the minimap if I scrolled…. but its only when I’m viewing the full page that I get the box that you see in the second row of screenshots in this post above. Is this what minimaps is? And if this is not the minimaps feature, then has anyone else encountered this issue?
Also, I have what seems to be an annoying bug: when I view my Contacts, if I press the letter ‘n’ expecting to see all my contacts starting with N, the phone enters in the number 9…… its only when I click into a random contact, and then try again that it works. This issue only happens occaisonally……..

FYI’ I ‘ve managed to upgrade my t-mobile uk e61 to 3.0633.09.09
after taking it to Nokia centre it came back with version 1.x but was then upgradable using the updater package. Took about a dozen attempts.

Hi, I’m using Scrapbook (Firefox plug-in) to save web pages for offline browsing. Does anyone know how to get the Nokia Web browser to browse offline pages I’ve saved from my computer on the memcard? I’m also using the lastes Opera Mini but cannot seem to open or direct both browsers to open the saved files. Is there a specific app out there that does offline browsing on this phone???
Before, I’d tried opening the index.html file from the phone’s File Mgr but the pages don’t draw out properly to fit on the screen and is REALLY slow. Then I installed Opera Mini, and when I click on the index.html file from my memcard, it opens Opera Mini browser, but does not load the offline web contents.
Any answers? Help?

Hi, Just got my E62 yesterday, this site is the reason for the purchase so thank you all. I dont remember reading anything about this but if I am wrong please accept my apologies. It seems that sometimes when I am browsing some websites the browser will automatically close and the device will return to the idle screen. Are the sites too big for the device? I have tried turning off the pics and audio and it seems to work but is there something wrong with my device? Does anyone else experience this? Thanks again.

Hi Dan,
I remember that something similar happened when I first got th E61 but that problem went away with the new firmware. Perhaps the upcoming E62 firmware update will address this issue.

Yes, in theory this is a superb phone. Unfortunately it takes about two minutes to “boot up” (ridiculous!), many have had severa issuesupdatign the firmware (the Nokia powered discussion forums are full of them), and it “dies” once in a while (I think when the battery runs real low) and will only power up again after taking out the battery for half a day. Great phone. I’m getting an Apple iPhone as soon as it is available in the UK. Or a Nokia 6100, if only those reliable bricks were avalable, I’d seriously start considerig one after all these Multi-can-do-everything-except-provide-a-reliable-phone-models from Nokia and Samsung (slider failing, …)

reading up on the update it just seems all technical,

GREETING, I WAS LOOKING AT PURCHASING MY FIRST NOKIA (E61i), AS I HAVE ONLY HAD MOTOROLAS ANB BLACKBERRY BEFORE.
I WANTED A NOKIA BECAUSE OF THE SUPERIOR BROWSER, AND ESPECIALLY FOR THE FLASH.
SO HERE’S MY QUESTION…….SPECIFICALLY, DOES THE E61i SUPPORT FLASH LITE 2.0 OR 2.1?
I ALREADY KNOW IT SUPPORTS FLASH LITE 1.0 OR 1.1., BUT I WAS TRYING TO FIND OUT IF IT SUPPORTED THE HIGHER 2.0/2.1 VERSION.
THANKS.
P.S. DO YOU THINK ITS WORTH SPENDING THE EXTRA MONEY,,,$900.00 TO BUY THE E90 INSTEAD OR DO YOU THINK THE E61I IS ABOUT THE SAME.
THANKS

Hi Andrea,
It means that there is a message in your outbox that for some reason can’t be sent. Go to your outbox and delete the message or try to send it.

Re: hanging browser- clear the cache, delete cookies, clear auto-bookmarks and restart the phone. Not sure if this works for firmware below version 3.

I bought the E61 on ebay, unlocked in factory box w/normal goodies. Unknown to me at the time it has no browser. How can I download the Original Browser into it. Or for that fact, any browser?
