Disassembled Nokia E61
Many of us are painfully aware of Kodawarisan who takes apart (and hopefully put back together) any Apple hardware he can find. Andres over at Risotto sent me a message and told me that he Disassembled a Nokia E61 - I cringed~! when I read that but after looking at the pictures I feel a bit better. However, I wouldn't recommend this for the faint of heart.

Wonder if it would be possible to replace the joystick with something a little less painful to use.

Here’s a minor design issue I have - why is the not a cutout on the side of the case so you can quickly insert and remove SDcards?

Hi Ryan,
Have you used the joystick on the E70? It’s made out of metal and at least feels a bit softer to use. I agree with you that the joystick can feel a bit hard if you use it a lot.
Charles:
Yes, that would have made sense…

Hi everyone!
I also agree that the joystick on the E serie is not good at all. I have been using E60, E61 and E70. In my opinion E60 is best (or less painfull), then comes E61 and E70.
Mostly of the time I am using my E61 and I am often thinking when is the joystick braking down. Sad that Nokia did not develop a better joystick for this superb device. I think the joystick will not last the 24 month guarantee period.
Have anyone had problems with it yet (except that it is a real pain to use)?

MAn…
Why would you do that to the E-61? It pains to see it in pieces..
(Just kidding)

Note that the Left Selection Key reacts slower that the Right Selection Key, maybe due to the fact that it is also the button used for locking the keypad (double function) so its advisable to assign the function you need the most quickly on the right Selection Key. oh, wouldn’t it be nice if we could assign the Email key to a different function aside from the Email? if we could assign that to the Inbox,it would be sweet!

Wrong Comment ^ should have been for the optimizing your shortcut keys. anyway, with the disassembly above, maybe i could paint my E61 grahite black as ive always had with my Nokia Phones. problem is, maybe after the painting, the paint might add a certain thickness to the covers, and might have a problem with the keys not fitting well. whats ur opinion peeps?

The joystick actually reminds me of the one on the Zire 71 Palm PDA. Both were horrendously painful to use

i have been reading your site for a couple of weeks now. and i am loving it. i have been looking for a smart phone, and wanting to get back to my nokia roots. a couple of my friends, who are tech savy, and really do know a lot when it comes to tech, do not care for the symbian os. they say it is crap and not any good.
what was the deciding factor for you for getting this phone, and what do you think of the sybian os?
i am looking to order my e61 in a couple of days and i will be returning to your site a lot. once my new layout is done, i will be adding a link to it.

Kulam,
Sounds like a good idea. I think it can be done.
Furious.styles,
Glad you like the blog and find it helpful. There were a number of reasons for me to get the Nokia E61:
1. Email
I wanted a very email capable phone and since the E61 supports BlackBerry, ActiveSync, Seven and many other corporate mobile email applications it fit my needs perfectly.
2. Wifi, BT, UMTS Quadband etc.
I also wanted a device that had a lot of option as far as wireless technologies and with the many supporting standards/wireless features I couldn’t think of anything missing in this regards
3. Style & QWERTY
I wanted a great looking QWERTY device and let’s face it - the Nokia E61 is the best looking device
I am fairly new to Symbian but like it a lot. Let us know how you like the device when you get it.
Cheers!

I see this at work every day…
That’s just undoing the results of the final assembly.

The Nokia OS is ten times better then any os out there, and this version 3 tops it off, even though it has a few bugs, alot faster smoother and reply time with it. I had the 9500 and im not sorry for getting the e61, small and lighter !

My personal Tip for the E61 joystick:
Get yourself a bunch of those Thinkpad[tm] Trackpoint[tm] caps on eBay. The Dome shaped ones with the rough surface do fine. Often you can get them for about €1 / $1 a pop (buy more than one, they wear).
The shape of the hole inside the cap fits the E61 joystick almost perfectly. All you need to do is cut off the lower part as much as it hinders joystick movement. In my case a small wire cutter did fine for the task (the rubber is too elastic for precise cutting with a blade).
The result sticks nicely on top of the joystick and makes it extremely usable. Two problems remain:
1) if you dont glue it, it will come off in your pocket and get lost.
OTOH if you glue it you cant replace it (it wears out)
2) The joystick wil protrude slightly above all other buttons and the rough surface quickly starts picking up pocket fluff when stuffed in your pouch which takes considerable effort to be removed afterwards.

Can a E60 use a E61 joystick? Cos my E60’s joystick is starting to wear out as it’s rubber form. Anyone know where i can get a E61 joystick if it’s possible to be used on a E60? Thanks.

Hello folks,
Does anyone know how to solve a ‘crazy’ going joystick; it went crazy few days ago, can not navigate up/down or left; it scrolls only clockwise, by itself… has anyone had similar problem. Is it software or mechanical issue?
June 24th, 2008 at 8:39 am
your joystick seem to have mechanical issue. This can be caused by dirt gone inside the casing at the back of stick. Try blowing air around the stick and see if it makes any diff he yes then you need to clean up after removing casing. E61 open up procedure is there on net. Peace
