The Family Is Growing - Nokia E50
In my search for the perfect weekend phone I decided to get a Nokia E50 from the dependable boys over at Mobile Planet. I've actually had the Nokia E50 for over a month now and primarily used it as my weekend phone.
I have to say that I really, really like this device! I will not give up my Nokia E61 (nor the Nokia E62 for that matter
) since I am hooked on email and rely on the QWERTY keyboard. However, as a "weekend phone" or a back-up, this device is amazing. It is small and light but the screen is huge. There is something about it that makes it very nice to hold. It's hard to explain it - you have to feel it. The device fits so well in your hands (and in the pocket) but the sensation you get when you hold the Nokia E50 is hard to explain…
I think Elisha on HowardForums came close when she wrote - "its awesome man…..i love it alot. can't keep my hands off it. feels like holding a gold nugget!"
Here are the ritual unboxing photos. More about the Nokia E50, a peek inside and some unique applications for the E50 over the next few days.
Some Tech Specs:
- Quad Band GSM 850/900/1800/1900
- Weight: 104g
- Dimensions: 113 mm x 43.5 mm x 15.5 mm
- 70 MB internal dynamic memory
- 240 x 320 pixels
- S60 platform, 3rd edition
- Supports: BlackBerry Connect, Visto Mobile, Activesync Mail for Exchange, Intellisync Wireless Email and Altexia

I’ve been thinking that the E61/2 would be a good “weekday” phone, with something slimmer for the weekends. I’m curious, though - do you have two phone accounts, or do you switch the sim card in and out? If you switch (the way I was considering doing), do you think there’s any issue of wear and tear on the card? Thanks; I enjoy your blog.

I have also shifted to NOkia E70 , awsome phone , high resolution , ease of use and ease to put it in pocket of my kameez ( traditional Pakistani shirt ) sorry my blog is down due to beta.blogger trouble will resume once it will start working

.. and the flickr page is private for the big pic’s
this might, of course, be standard - i’m a noobie here

Sorry Marc. My bad. As usual, trying to do too many things at the same time. The pictures are public now.
October 15th, 2006 at 11:50 pm
hey man good choice…….
i knew my Gold Nugget analogy would catch on in regards to the E50 one day.
i got a bunch of pics with the E61 and E50 side by side and they are on my flickr as well.
October 16th, 2006 at 12:34 am
Brian,
I think I already have that issue. My phone sometimes shows that sim registration failed. When I look at the sim card, I see some deep scratches on it… I think this is a bad design of E61. Will go to cingular shop and replace it soon..
October 16th, 2006 at 1:34 am
Hi Brian,
I only have one SIM so I have to move it from one device to the next.
Speaking about side by side comparison photos.

Best Nokia phone at the moment.

Has anyone tried the Avaya Connect Suite yet?
I was wondering if it would work with my Mitel instead.

Still no camera though!! - pity
October 18th, 2006 at 8:42 am
Hi Steve,
The Nokia E50 comes in two different models - one with camera and one without. So if you want the camera Nokia e50 you can get that one.

I’ve been using my E50 (purchased in Asia) for a month now. Nokia has done a great job packing all those features into such a small form factor. Unfortunately, I seem to be among the few who have issues with it’s battery life. I never get more than 2 days on a single charge while my 6800 used to go for 4-5 days. Swapping the battery didn’t help.
I’m also not able to connect to medianet. I use an old AT&T sim, which did all the setup automatically. I’ve verified all the settings but keep getting the message “Package data connection not available”. Anyone else have this issue?
October 18th, 2006 at 4:42 pm
Do you have BT enabled by any chance? And is your data packet setting set to When Available or When Needed?
Turn of BT and set Data Packet to When Needed and it should give you more juice. Also make sure that when you close some apps, that they are indeed closed. You can hold down the Menu key and it will show you whats open in the background.
October 19th, 2006 at 10:09 am
Thanks for the tip Elisha. I noticed a few apps like IM running in the background. But how do you close them? I don’t want to restart the phone every time!
I also got this link from another discussion, which helped configure for mmode (and other data connections) and it works:
https://nokiags.wdsglobal.com/standard?siteLanguageId=118
I guess the older AT&T sims don’t work with Medianet.
October 19th, 2006 at 2:20 pm
You can either re-open the program and exit it from there or you can get programs like Handy Taskman and Best Task Manager which lets you close it from there. I personally use Handy Taskman.
October 20th, 2006 at 6:39 am
Yah it gives you a very solid feel, but lacks that X factor of fashionable phones. Steel like and durable. And at least the joystick don’t hurt as much as the E61, but still I will die without my WIFI.

[...] Sorry, I skipped the unboxing pr0n, but if that’s your bag, Ed’s got you covered. [...]
November 3rd, 2006 at 6:09 pm
Hi! Do you know if the E50 has a wi-fi access like the E61?
November 3rd, 2006 at 6:15 pm
Hi Chinang,
There is no WiFi in the E50 but it is still one amazing device!!!
November 7th, 2006 at 11:02 am
[...] Although I have written about the Nokia E50 before I feel that it wasn’t a “review” of the device. Like so many of my posts it was more a photo exposé than anything else. To make things right I asked Asri from the excellent site i-symbian to write a more in depth review of the Nokia E50. Here’s Asri’s report: [...]

I´ve a problem installing apps and games, when installing sis files the phone won´t let me install them prompting the message: “the file.sis instalations is not admitted. When instaling Java game then messages me with “there´s no enough memory please close some of the apps running” and there are none running. If someone have any answer to my problem I will really appreciate.

Anyone know how to set up IM (msn) in the US? I bought my E50 in Asia and T-Mobile(USA) can’t seem to figure out how to set up the IM unless I subscribe to their web plan and access IM through the internet. Any ideas about what ‘Server Name’ and ‘Web adress’ need to be entered? They said the access point would be t-zones…

February 17th, 2007 at 6:02 pm
Hi Lisa,
There is no real way around it. Either you pay to the carrier for a reliable IM service or you purchase a 3rd party solution such as IM+ or AgileMessenger.

I bought E50 just a couple of weeks ago - its really awesome. There is something in it that makes you comfortable - whats that - you need to have the phone, only then you’ll know it. In my opinion, Nokia E50 belong to that rare breed of Nokia phones which came in early 2000,2001. It looks like a modern Nokia 6310i. I still have Nokia 6310i - which I’ll never dispose off. I check my gmail atleast twice a day. I check cricket websites quite often. Its beautiful man. Finally Nokia produced something at par with their 6310i.

Those who are facing problems in configuring gmail are advised to download gmail client for Nokia E50. Its available for free.

hello there!
I am an E50 user, I also updated the FW to the latest.
but, to be eact: Nokia E50 (RM-170) 06.27.1.0 current, update 06.27.01
Hungary Vodafone.
question:
I did not found the “NOKIA CATALOG” icon earlier, and do not find it in this release of firmware.
(I am talking about : http://www.nokia.com/catalogs )
I wanted originally, to download the cool “pearl black” skin.
later, I found the skin on the web, but you know– I like to get my SIS files directly from nokia, etc etc.
SO ! I downloaded from nokia the catalog****blabla**EMEA.sis, wanted to install, because I did not found the icon on my nokia: then , surprise ! installer says, oops, already installed, or internal application: unable to install.
so this is my main problem now. anyone a hint? can I find the executable or something with Y browser or so? or is it hidden on my mobile because something.
THANKS ! I love your site!

Anybody knows how do I configure my nokia E50 to register with SIP server (example like http://www.fonosip.com). I can see setting option in E50 but I can’t see the option where I can tell my phone rather than using GSM services, phone should use IP Telephony services and it gets connected to SIP server (There are many SIP servers are available on the internet where you can register and use the services between NOKIA E-series phones.) The options what I am asking those complete feature is available in Nokia E61. What abt Nokia E50?
July 3rd, 2007 at 5:28 am
Hi Anyone find that E50 calender does not have the same features especially the anniversary bit? I got so used to Birthdays and anniversays on 6230i that this one now seems like a step back.

Those of you trying to install software on E50 but get error messages, try Tools\App.mgr\options\settings: Make sure Software Installation is set to “All” and Online Certif.check is “Off” (If not required)

e50 is my first symbian phone ever to use and to possess. and i definitely agree that its one heck of a phone, for both business and leisure and definitely comfortable to hold , esp being very thin unlike other Symbian OS phone starting with 6600 or anyother.
According to Nokia website, (http://www.forum.nokia.com/info/sw.nokia.com/id/ddd8018c-e10c-4327-bc7f-ca37a41af912/E50.html)
it says that e50’s ability to have two phone numbers in one phone.
Does anyone know abt that , and how its done ?
