VoIP On The Nokia E61
Let me start by saying that I am by no means an expert on VoIP on the Nokia E61. I probably only know the very top of the VoIP iceberg. When I first got my Nokia E61 I tried to use the VoIP functionality but couldn't get it to work. I spent a few days trying to set it up but to no avail. I soon lost my patience and forgot about it. I focused on the many other features and applications available for the Nokia E61.
Set-up problems aside, another reason I lost interest is probably that I am not the right target for VoIP. I have a calling plan that provides me with more minutes than I can use and if that isn't enough, all weekends and evenings are free.
As is common, long distance or mobile-to-mobile doesn't matter since the effective price per minute is the same with my carriers' plan. For international calls I rely on prepaid telephone cards - I dial a local number, dial my pin code and then the international call I want to make. This way the cost for an International call drops to a cents per minute.
However, VoIP on the Nokia E61 is one of the most common questions I receive so there is clearly a large interest and demand for this feature. A week ago I thought I should give VoIP on the E61 another chance. I came across two services/sites that I liked - Sipgate and VoXaLot.
I like these services because they have removed ALL the issues I had of setting up VoIP on the Nokia E61. Both Sipgate and VoXaLot has excellent support and documentation to make their services work on the E61.
Sipgate let's you sign up for a German or UK (if you live in the UK) telephone number so that you can receive phone calls. Naturally, you can also call other Sipgate users for free. Their wordwide rates are also reasonable.
One reason I really like Sipgate is that as soon as you have registered as a new user (free) and signed in, Sipgate will generate all your personaliazed settings and display them on a webpage complete with screenshots for each of the set up steps on the Nokia E61. You will see each step of the set-up with your personalized settings as it should appear on your Nokia E61. With this brilliant set-up you CANNOT GO WRONG!
Simply register and sign in and you will see your own settings:
VoXaLot doesn't have the same personalized set-up page but it is as easy to set up. Thanks to very clear direction posted by Martin you can register and get it to work within a few minutes.
(Press in the joystick to get the selection screen below, in order to make an Internet call)
Another nice touch by VoXaLot is that voicemails you receive to your account will be forwarded to your email address as an attachment. Naturally, you can also dial in to pick up your voicemail but the added service to have them sent via email is very convenient.
In addition to Sipgate and VoXaLot, there are many good "how to use VoIP on the Nokia E61" posts available. Pasha over at NokMe has written a great guide of how the set up of Nokia E61 for pbxes and Gizmo. There is also good information from Christian about using Nokia E61 with Asterisk. Last but not least, Martin has posted about using the Nokia E61 with FON.
So many VoIP solutions for the Nokia E61 - so little time…

sorry forget to ask, need to upgrade newest firmware?
September 13th, 2006 at 1:51 am
Hi Ed,
Thanks! Great post!
I just tried sipgate (the UK one) and it worked like a charm as you mentioned. I’m still on the old firmware so it still works with the old firmware.
Tried calling the test no. (10000) via WLAN and 3G. WLAN’s quality was better and there was slight lag whilst using 3G.
Question - Once you connect to the server (e.g. by making an Internet call), it shows a constant connection. I tried to disconnect it but each time I tried going into the SIP settings, it doesn’t allow me to. Eventually, I had to turn off the phone and turn it back on again. I wonder if you know of a more graceful way to do this.
I’m going to try Voxalot next.
Thanks again for a superb post. I had actually given up on VoIP on the E61 but deep down inside, I’d always yearn to get it working and now it is!!! Thanks to you Ed!!!
Cheers!

Ed,
Thanks for the instruction. Your blog is great….
—————————————————————
Andrew,
You might first try to disconnect your phone from sipgate (from connectivity menu). Then, go to the WLAN connection and disconnect it. I also found that setting the “registration” to “when needed”, your phone will be more stable (with the old firmware). Also for the old firmware, if you are out from the wlan range while registered to the sip provider (in my case, pbxes.org), you won’t be able to re-register with the provider again unless you reboot your phone. This will not happen with the new firmware.

Hi TT,
Thanks for the tip. It works perfectly.
Cheers!

What are people using VOIP for? (seems an odd question I know).
On my contract, I have 650 crossnet, anytime minutes and on my homephone I don’t pay for lineland calls. This means that between the two I don’t pay for calls beyond the monthly contract.
I take it the main use of VOIP is for international or conference calls?

> sorry forget to ask, need to upgrade newest firmware?
The old firmware works just fine.

If you know any good ones for Australia, please share as i am looking for one with $0 per month
September 13th, 2006 at 5:30 am
I currently have the all DATA plan(internet) from cingular for $45. and the normal famil shared plan.
I want to get VOIP, for everytime I travel international. I have other countries Sim card, but if I can get VOIP to work then it will save me carring around things.
I want to work with Israel. Is there Skype for the E61?
aDDITIONALLY: I’ve asked before, is it better to get blackberry service instead of the cingular data plan?

for German E61 User!
September 13th, 2006 at 6:07 am
I’ve easily configured VOIPtalk (voiptalk.org) to runn on the E61 with a number of sites available that show the required setup. I found the sound quality is way above any others I tried (Gizmo was atrocious). I am in Australia and Voiptalk gives you UK numbers which is great for my UK-based daughter to use and for my head office to call me for next to nothing. I can call them at a cost of 1p per minute from hotels or any open WiFi link on my travels. Even from Australia, I use it for all international calls now for my business throughout Asia Pacific.
In the “for what it is worth” category, I also have an ATA on my office phone here and with voiptalk active on the ATA and on my E61, they both ring when I get an incoming call!!
Voiptalk emails a .wav file if you receive email but I have not been able to play this file on the E61. I can dial up to receive the message, but any suggestions as to whether this should work or could work would be appreciated.
September 13th, 2006 at 8:06 am
Is it just me, or is Sipgate very expensive ? I remember VoipTalk as being a lot cheaper.
Also, my VoipTalk settings no longer appear to work with the new firmware.
Calling.a test number using 3Gmay be deceiving, downlink to the phone is 384 kb/s but uplink is around 43 kb/s, you need 2.5 tines that for a good connection.
Regards, Michael

The following page tells you exactly how to set up E61 with Gizmo. http://support.gizmoproject.com/index.php?_a=knowledgebase&_j=questiondetails&_i=207
I have done that as soon as I got mine 3 weeks ago. No, after updating firmware I have set this up again and I can say that, even though there are no “official” improvements to VOIP, it works much better. With the original FW I was getting crappy connection that was breaking every couple of seconds. Now, connection stays up and voice quality is good.

Hi,
in order to register a VOIP connection (sipgate in my case) do you need to have a valid service?
What connection the phone is it using to ask for registration?
September 14th, 2006 at 12:07 am
Hi!
Thanks for the post!
Sipgate the only VOIP sollution I could manage on my E61, and it works on GPRD/EDGE too. I made a succesful test call - ok, the sound quality was terrible, and the incoming calls ring out on GPRS…
My only problem that I can’t set up a group for connecting to SIP, I have to manually change gprs/3g to wifi, when I get home/office…

Hi,
Truphone (http://www.truphone.com) have a public beta for E-Series phones which sets up the VOIP settings automatically. They have lots of free calls to landlines and regular mobiles until the end of the year too, depending on in which country you are based.
September 14th, 2006 at 9:59 am
Truphone does not currently let users register. You need to wait for an invitation email
michael: I can confirm that voiptalk.org no longer works with the new firmware, the phone registers fine but when dialing any test number (like 902), I get Address Busy. My settings used to work 100% with the first firmware.

Not sure how else to “notify” everyone, but the following Nokia site just posted a user initiated firmware software update option for the E61.
I’ve been watching this site for a while, hoping that they would add the Nokia E61 to their list of supported phones.
Well, now they have.
Enjoy!

Based in Holland, I have my e61 on Voiptalk. No problems whatsoever. I am using it throughout Europe on business travel and use it in the office for calls abroad. If you wish a better sound quality or a more stable connection (conference calls f.e.) , simply dial 28 before the phonenumber you want to dial.
September 26th, 2006 at 4:19 am
today I have found this VOIP service as I surf thru the Skype forum. http://www.truphone.com/scn/welcome.tru , Their software support E61, so I think I will download and try it out in a while.
September 26th, 2006 at 9:52 am
Hello all E61 lovers!
http://www.fring.com/ has done a great software for mobile voip. Though our “toy” is not supported yet.
When you join you have to choose a handset and as the E61 is not supported you choose “other”.
You will not be able to join but will get a question about which handset you are using. Maybe …. mabye???? if many should fill in this form http://www.fring.com/download_fring/ it will not take long before they have a software for E61 as well
It is about communication between peoples…. the rest is technology…

Does anyone have any further information on the E61 integration with Cisco Unified Call manager (or CCm Express)??
There’s lot sof talk about it on Nokia’s webpages, sych as: http://www.businesssoftware.nokia.com/cisco_systems.php but there’s no details!
I just got a trial unit of an E61 specifically to tets this capability.
Your support appreciated -
Marcus
September 28th, 2006 at 5:28 pm
Hi Marcus,
I don’t think it is released yet. It might be in selective beta but not released for the mass market.
September 29th, 2006 at 1:19 am
Hi Marcus!
Staff at my job are testing the Cisco Client at the moment. I works very well with E series. This is a totally different “story” than SIP that are not working very well on E-series (yet?).
We are running a test versions from Nokia (in Beta) and as far as I am concerned it is not available for the market yet….. Though it looks good so far…..
September 29th, 2006 at 11:21 am
Hi Hocki -
Thanks for your fast response. It’s good news that the funtionality is impressive. I think this Cisco/Nokia combo is a better capability than a PDA running a ’softphone’ application.
The question I have is how well integrated is the client into the phone - is it almost transparent to the user that they are using VoIP?
Any tips on trying to contact Nokia - or is there a site to sign up to the beta…?
Thanks!
September 29th, 2006 at 5:16 pm
Well. I’ve spent the better part of two days trying to get VOIP to works on the e61. I can not get it to register. Never even get the VOIP icon on the screen. I think this is not yet ready for primetime? I have checked and rechecked every setting many times, deleted and started over several times, all to no avail. Nice support from Nokia, NOT.
September 29th, 2006 at 11:07 pm
Hi there!
TruVoip (http://www.truvoip.co.uk) and SipGate (www.sipgate.co.uk) has been working fine for me for weeks…
But yesterday I found a new latvian service TiViPhone (www.tivi.com) witch works fine with GPRS connects too, the others has icredibly bad voice quality on GPRS…
TiViPhone uses an own software to connect, so you can avoide the built-in SIP software problems…
September 30th, 2006 at 4:07 am
Thanks Sanyci, you have given me new hope. I just went to the Tivi site and downloaded the program for the e61. It looked like it was going to be easy but…..I put in my username and password and then when I try to register it says “cannot register, connection timed out” I tired using a GPRS connection and I will try WIFI later today but I suspect this may be my problem with the other services as well. I use the same connections that I have tried for voip to browse the web and for e-mail and they work perfectly every time. The only time I get this “connection timed out stuff” is when I’m trying to register for any kind of VOIP setup. Any ideas?
September 30th, 2006 at 9:06 am
Keatisk,
what is your provider and in which country?
I’m using T-Mobile Hungary 300MB/Month data plan, and it works correctly.
I think that the “connection timed out” error message could be a tipical provider problem…
September 30th, 2006 at 10:01 am
I am on Cingular in the US. I have an unlimited data plan. I don’t see any settings on the e61 that would make a difference. It well may be a provider problem - if it is I could be sunk because I am sure that Cingular will be of no help because they are selling the e62, a US version of the e61 that has no WIFI because they want people using minutes to call and not data. Do you think I am out of luck?
September 30th, 2006 at 1:11 pm
Does Cingular blocking the GPRS/3G data connection in any way? For example some domains or some IP adresses?
I think there could be a problem with the connection between Cingular and the East-European internet providers too…
The big distance could cause “connection timed out” problems too…
September 30th, 2006 at 2:09 pm
I am not aware of Cingular blocking and IP addresses or domains. I had not thought of the distance issue but when I tried a US voip through pbxes I get timed out there as well. It is hard to understand.

Hi again Marcus!
The Cisco Call Manager client (SCCP) for E series is in my opinion very good intergrated into the phone, though I am pretty used to use these kind of applications so some one else might note share my opinion.
I have not seen any sites (though I have not been looking for it) where you can dowload the application.
I think Nokia wants the resume from these beta testing programs that some are doing at the moment and after that they release the client.
I have no idea what the price will be (probably those who are selling Cisco applications from before will implement it into their services).
October 3rd, 2006 at 2:55 pm
Hi there
Just want to confirm about http://www.Truphone.com.
I have an E60 and E61, I have downloaded the Beta which is free, they are also giving out free credit (as part of the Beta). The installation is fine and I gather will be streamlined.
The best bit is is that it works really well the voice quality is very good. I got it set up straight away and it seems to work well over various, wireless routers.
Better than any Vonage or other Voip products I have tested. This is great stuff.
October 3rd, 2006 at 5:17 pm
I have Cingular in USA. I’m able to browse with WIFI. I’m getting Sip as “Registration Failed”. I do get Sip settings as “Registered” when I select Default Access point as “Internet-Cingular” (data plan). But still cannot make Internet calls. I went over the settings over n over, tried all sorts of ticks mentioned in this blog. But No luck so far. not sure if it’s the carrier or the instrument.
It’s is a Great Blog mate, with lots of useful information to digest
October 4th, 2006 at 3:33 am
Hi
There is any softphone that avaliable for E61?
October 4th, 2006 at 6:54 am
Just as a very usefull addition to Voip, look at http://www.nimbuzz.com. A free software as MSN, but voice enabled mobile-to-mobile and mobile-to-pc and pc-to-pc. The voice software will be released mid november, I have been using the voice Beta version and it works great. The pc software is Alpha version already. A good alternative besides Wifi, as it uses GPRS. On your pc/laptop it also works as a chatprogramm and sms to and from buddies are free. This will cut roaming costs dramatically !! Skype mobile is trying to do the same, but they just announced their software has been delayed for several months.
October 4th, 2006 at 7:40 am
I have also been using Nimbuzz for a while and I works OK. Thought voice mobile - mobile is NOT going over GPRS/Wi-Fi and the price is depending on what contract you have with your provider (it is not P2P). Both have to call a gateway in the country they are in, if there is not a geteway in your country the call will go to Germany/Netherlands??.
If you are running F-Secure on your computer unfortunately Nimbuzz will not work because F-Secure replace a component in Windows (Winsock).
You can go around this problem and replace (in MS-DOS) the original Windows Winsrock library but then I think your computer is not protected in the right way anymore.
October 18th, 2006 at 4:55 pm
Has anyone heard of iskoot.com beta version and its ability to perform on the E61?
I’m from Toronto Canada and seeking a dependable way to access voip without a dataplan pkg. Nokia made a great phone and I feel like a pioneer with no recommended path in the deep voip forest.
Mobile Voip provider found to date: voxLib.com, iskoot.com, nimbuzz.com, Trufone.com,TruVoip (http://www.truvoip.co.uk) and SipGate (www.sipgate.co.uk), TiViPhone (www.tivi.com).
I have no recommendations, as they all claim to be the best, and I cannot figure out the proper one to pick nor basic programming instructions.
Please reply and enjoy the quest, my fellow “voipioneers”.

I know very little about VOIP but I have an E61 that uses aql. Quite frankly it is a dream all you do is Text nokia to 64446 (no setup OR monthly charge - ever).
You receive an SMS message back with details of your account and in addition to your VOIP number you even get 0870 number and VOIP Voicemail. The whole setup of your E61 is automatic and it works.
Call charges to other aql VOIP phones are free wherever they are and calls from other parts of the world to normal landlines are in the one to two pence a minute bracket.
Hope this is useful to you all.. Phil

I configured Voxalot using the instructions given above. I am able to test echo, dial 1800 numbers in the US, but the PSTN incoming thing always goes to my voice mail saying i’m unavailable. I can check the voice mail but am not able to make my phone ring with an internet call.
November 11th, 2006 at 10:21 pm
Had to update the group! Voxalot started working on its own.. I’m getting incoming calls from regular PSTN phones and can dial 1800 for free and the quality is GREAT! Thanks admin for the info and this great blog!

Hi All,
I am using voiptalk on my Nokia E61 phone for last two months with out any issues. Setup guide at http://voiptalk.org/nokia is great and made it very easy to configure the phone for VoIP.
Above all I have multiple geographic incoming numbers from uk, us and Pakistan and I can receive calls as local phone to all the countries.
I have managed to sort out the roaming issue as now it automatically switched to office or home WiFi connection and I don’t need to make any change manually. To do go into SIP settings, add new profile and select use as existing. Select your existing profile in my case office one and change the name to home. Now go to 2nd profile and change the access point to your home access point. Now go to Internet tel.settings and edit the existing profile. In my case Default and select SIP profiles and select change from option and add you 2nd SIP profile there and press OK. You will see the SIP profile name would be changed to several profiles.
Now when ever you get into any of you configured WiFi connection phone will get registered automatically.
Enjoy Nokia with Roaming.
I have tested many VoIP services and best I found is voiptalk as it gives you best voice quality with cheaper rates and all kind of features like Scheduled dial plan (per time bases) voice mail, voice mail to email, SMS call back etc. (Most of these features are available in there pre-pay silver tariff which also provides you a free uk geographic number and cheep calling rates then normal with all extra features. And above all their support is great and very quick. You can also try their free phone base support which requires at least £5 credit in your account.

SIP GATEWAY
I remember someone was asking for an SIP gateway in Scandinavia a while ago. A PSTN company who owns an ISP in Finland have just released a SIP based Voip service called MultiVoice http://multi.fi/sv/consumer/extras/voip . I have been using it for a while via Wi-FI and it works perfect on my E61, although I had some NAT problems at first. The voice quality is ISDN standard and very good compared to many similar services.
The calls are free within the community and calls out cost the same price as calling from a landline within the (0)6 area in Finland. Skype out to the number cost 0.029 € (0.036 $).
Unfortunately their webpage is yet only in finnish and swedish and you have to call customer service +358 6 786 8222 (8.00-16.00 (GMT +2)) to register to the service. Monthly fee is 2.90 € (3.72 US $).

Hi
I am having a e61 and our only ISP have blocked all voip through a strong firewall so my e61 does not register with all providers.
The only providers that work are those who use tunelling via vpn or http like VoipDiscount which work very well on my Pc but does not register via E61… so please if any one knows of any e61 voip program that works with firewalls please let me know

Hi, I have a question that I hope someone can answer. I am able to use VoXaLot, Truphone and other VOIP services on my secure home WiFi and at some public locations in the US. At other locations that appear to be open networks I cannot get any VOIP service to register. I don’t fully understand VOIP and WiFi so I can’t understand why it works someplaces and not others. I am always able to use the available WiFi for web browsing and e-mail so I know the connection is good. Any ideas? It would be great to be able to use VOIP at more locations.
Thanks!

hello fellows,
either i am not reading right or i am not looking in the right places. i am looking for phone to PC voip software that would work with E61. i can’t just find it. SKYPE and GOOGLE TALK dont work on nokia phones. i am in US and hoping to buy E61 as soon as i get good deal.
December 6th, 2006 at 4:54 pm
seems this is not the place to find answers to all the sipgate users not succeeding in registering which is what seemingly many have.
does anybody know a source for help ? supported routers etc ?
my setup:
netgear wlan router
grandstream voip phone (works)
powerbook with xten ( works)
I know how to set up my router with port forwarding so more than 1 devices log into sipgate , since grandstream and x-ten work fine together
but since 3 days I try to find answers to the same question:
why doesnt my E 61 log into sipgate when I give it a fixed IP ?
I also tried to download some different desktops/skins and none of them were installing. Is there a way to download and install other themes without having to use GSM ?
I found this website http://gallery.mobile9.com/c/nokia-e61-themes/1/ but none of the files are permitted to install due to certification issues.
December 11th, 2006 at 2:38 am
If you want the E-series to work behind NAT then use the aql.com service as described by Phil B above. (There is no software download, just the configurations via OTA file). The unique thing about it is that it presents your GSM number when making a VoIP call so people know who it is calling and how to call back later when you are out of WiFI range. Remember to change the access point (AP) in the SIP settings every time you mover to another access point. Better still, just make multiple copies of the SIP settings with names to match the AP, Then its easy, connect to new AP, change to SIP setting with matching name.

Hi Marcus,
Can you email me the Nokia SCCP client software you mentioned? I’ve got my E70 registered to CCM 5.0(4) via SIP and it works great however I think there may be a limitation to shared lines with one phone SCCP and the other SIP. Thanks!

I can warmly recommend Challenger mobile. It’s available at http://www.challengermobile.com
They do firewall traversal and the sound quality is perfect.
I use it on my Nokia E61.

Hey folks,
Just have to add my two cents on an earlier comment as to Sipgate and Gizmo.
Months ago I tested Gizmo and thought it was worthless. Tested Sipgate and was pretty pleased. After about a week, I could no longer receive calls to my German pstn number (which in itself wasn’t optimal as I’m based in Sweden and rely on calls to/from the US), but it was good for calling out and about half of what I pay from my home phone for intl calls.
After the FW update, I reconfiged it all and figured the call-in function should work, but alas. Sipgate’s response was that the number could only be accessed from the German network. Not good.
Then I revisited Gizmo and now it works like a charm. Calls made from my E61 outbound show my Gizmo call-in number on caller ID, and calling that number always gets me a stable ring signal and conversation on my E61.
So anyone else not happy with their provider may want to have another look at Gizmo. Stability is up and their rates are about half of that of Sipgate.

Anyone able to use VoipBuster/VoipDiscount (Finarea’s) on their E61? I got the setting registered but cannot get connected to any number with the message “Address not in use”. Any idea what is wrong?
December 28th, 2006 at 9:05 am
Bawang, check how the number is shown when dialing… Make sure that the number does not include any telephone delimiters such as “(XXX) XXX-XXXX” . It should just be the number… Sometimes when calling from my contacts, the number comes in formatted and will not dial with the same error “Address not in use”. Try removing any extra characters from the number….

Although Vonage connects using the above settings, and although one can make a call from the E61, on my device, the called party cannot hear me speak.

tphank, Thanks. That was exactly the problem. I am now able to do VoIP.
I have also discovered from experience and reading the various forums that if you are unable to connect/register your voip at some free hotspots, you might want to change the transport protocol from UDP to TCP in the settings. What happened is that some of these free places block UDP 5060 port. Hope that can help someone.
Eid Mubarak to those celebrating and; have a good new year.
Bawang.

Problem with the iSkoot installation fixed. You have to use an American city in the clock-settings and English as the terminal language.

Just received my brand new E61.
Updated firmware before doing anything, then added sipphone & Voiptalk accounts without a hitch, both seem to work perfectly for outgoing and incomming calls when used individually.
Three questions :-
Will the E61 maintain the WiFi connection whilst logged on to sip servers?
With two sip services connected, can I choose which one is used for Internet calls, currently only calls via the default profile seem to get through.
Why can’t I add a second account with the same sip service, I get this error “Unable to save. Profiles in same realm must have same user name”!!
Any help would be appreciated.

Someone mentioned fring earlier, and I’ve been checking them daily for updates on the s60 v3 version and it’s now out as a preview.
This thing is AWESOME!!! Mind you there are several bugs and it doesn’t really feel polished, but the important part is that it works for making Skype calls on both wifi and 3G.

Been trying to find a reasonably priced French VOIP In number, best I’ve found so far is Yahoo 24EUR/Year. Unfortunately after much trawling of the net it seems although Yahoo voice is sip based it can only be accessed with Yahoo Messenger, and therefore not via E61.
Can anyone confirm or refute this?
Or alternatively where I can get a cheap French VOIP In number, Gizmo has them for $35/year, but cant get them to accept my credit card!!

This is what I am doing :MENU->CONNECT.->INTERNET TEL.-> then I highlight my wifi connection here (that is succesfully used for internet)->OPTIONS ->CONNECT TO SERVICE. But says “unable to connect to the connection network”. When I sniff my Cisco Wifi box for this problem it says “May 5 07:30:40.292: %DOT55-6-DISASSOC: Interface Dot55Radio0, Deauthenticating
Station xxxxx.xxxx.xxxx Reason: Disassociated because sending station is leaving
(or has left) BSS
I am clue less as I can browse internet easily.

E65 - Have just tested this phone using the VoIP features. The phone works great and I am happy to report Zingotel.com numbers work well. So if your looking for a North American number check them out.
I am using my phone in Asia now and very happy with it.
There is a big difference between Zingotel or a regular VoIP reseller and Skype. You get what you pay for.

I have been using Gizmo on my E61 to make Internet Calls. Outbound calls to other Gizmo users works fine. However incoming calls from fellow Gizmo users do not seem to work. When they dial my number I am able to see the incoming call but when I answer the call I am not able to hear them. If anyone has experienced this problem and has found a solution please advise. Thanks.

I got the internet telephone configuration setup on my E61i to use my Vonage softphone account based on the settings in this thread (thanks). Outbound calls from my E61i work fine, but inbound calls do not. The phone rings and shows the caller ID of the inbound call, but pressing the answer key does not answer the call. It looks like the call is answered on the E61i, but it just keeps on ringing on the other end until it goes to voice mail. Any ideas?

I’ve just purchased an E51 in Australia. My ISP suppies a VOIP service. However a VOIP capable router is required.
My query is “does the E51 have inbuilt ATA. ie could I access any WAN, even those that do not have ATA built in?”
Aso, where do I find indstruction to use the E51 via VOIP? Note that my ISP has supplied the SIP etc
December 19th, 2007 at 12:38 pm
Sumon,
download fring from http://www.fring.com from your Nokia N series.
My wife uses Nokia N70 with Fring. Setting Skype, Google Talk & SIP/VoIP is never been easier.
I muself use Nokia E61i with Fring.
December 22nd, 2007 at 7:46 am
I’ve been using Fring and its works OK, although sometimes it hangs up. However I would like to utilise the in-built SIP capabilities of the E51.
I’ve entered the data (I believe correctly) but keep getting the error message “Unable to connect to the connection network” I am running a Netgear DG834G v2. Is it possible that by data registration data is being corrupted by the WAP router/modem?
December 23rd, 2007 at 9:05 am
Rod, how about changing the connection to your 3G/gprs network? if similar problem occurs, re-enter your setting
December 25th, 2007 at 9:24 pm
Rod, I can’t get it to work with the built in SIP either on the E51.
I don’t have a cell phone provider yet, so no sim card. May-be this is the problem.
I also tried fring and it works fine, but I can’t receive calls and there is a voice delay in the calls.
I might try truphone, but it looks to be the same thing as fring, so I don’t see the point.
I also want to try to access it via 3G/gprs, but I can’t get access right now.
If anyone has any ideas, I would appriciate all the help I can get.
Thanks,
jonathan
