Nokia E61i Firmware Update - v3.0633.69.00

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

Thanks to RP_Guy I found out that there is a new (to me at least) firmware available for my Nokia E61i and Nokia E65

.

The update process went like a charm! I used the latest version of Nokia's software update tool to update the device. It is amazing how easy and painless this process is.

However, I always recommend that you CAREFULLY read the instructions before you update! Also remember to back up everything on your device since it will be reset and wiped during the process.

One last word of advice - if you are using BlackBerry Connect for Nokia make sure that the new firmware is compatible with BlackBerry Connect BEFORE you update.

Changes made from v2.0633.65.01 to v3.0633.69.00

New Firmware For Nokia E61i

Monday, November 19th, 2007

UPDATED WITH LIST OF CHANGES BELOW THE FOLD:

There is a new firmware available for Nokia E61i. There is nothing about the firmware on Nokia's device software update page yet, but the software is available when using Nokia Software Updater. The new firwmare version is 2.0633.65.01

It is important to note that availability of new device firmware depends on a number of factors. Region, language and of course carrier version are variables that influence when new firmware is available.

My Nokia E61i is a non-carrier branded version, the unlocked plain version, and when I tried NSU there was new software available.

Here are a few changes that I have noticed. Please feel free to point out more changes that you have come across:

Predictive text input:

This one is strange. This feature shows up but I couldn't get it to work. Has anyone been able to enable this? I really like the idea of having predictive text as a feature even on a QWERTY device.

Improvements to calendar layout:

The calendar can now display the week number or the week dates in the month view.

Great Industrial Design Made Me Do It!

Monday, November 19th, 2007

Rack this one up under "I didn't need it but I just wanted to have it" category. Blame it on the great design, the moment I laid my eyes on the Nokia LD-4W, Bluetooth GPS Module I knew I just had to have it!

Given that I already have the the predecessor Nokia LD-3W, which is working great, buying the LD-4W was a bit of stretch.

But I caved in and bought it - great industrial design pushed me over the edge.

The Nokia LD-4W is significantly thinner and lighter than the previous model. The LD-3W was by no mean large or heavy but the LD-4W is tiny in comparison. It weighs less than half of the LD-3W and is half as thin.

Functionality wise, the LD-4W matches or surpass that of its predecessor.

Gmasked Nokia E61i

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

As many of you know, I am a big fan of a personalized, unique look and feel of your Nokia Eseries device. I have several times written about Gmask, the company that will wrap your device in few microns thick plastic film to give it a brand new look.

Mitch had his Nokia E61i Gmasked and writes about it here. Nice looking device Mitch!

Nokia E61i - Wired Editor’s Pick

Monday, October 29th, 2007

Nokia E61i won the Wired's Editor's Pick award in their smartphones category of their Wired Test Winter 2008 issue.

The Nokia E61i beat out  a number of formidable competitors including Palm Treo 755P, BlackBerry 8830, Motorola Q9 etc.

Wired liked the amazing web browser, the great collection of business and media applications, and the long talk time.

Listed as what they did not like was the width of the device, the placement of the microSD slot and the lack of stereo Bluetooth.

Not Black - Titanium Nokia E61i

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

A reader was kind enough to point out one subtle difference - the black Nokia E61i is not black but available in certain markets as "Nokia E61i Limited Titanium Color Edition"

So it's not black - it's Titanium. In either case, I like it a lot.

Thanks for the pictures Francis.

Nokia E61i in Multiple Colours

Monday, October 15th, 2007

Personally, I wouldn't mind to see Nokia E61i in each colour of the rainbow but I know that's too much for some of you. Let's not go that far but instead show four great colours of the Nokia E61i in one picture - a first probably.

The black Nokia E61i has recently shown up for sale in Asia.

Nokia Eseries @ 777km/h

Inspired by a previous post on this blog about the Nokia E61i in the air, I decided to try something similar.

Bored out of my mind on a flight back from Redmond, I took out my Nokia E61i, paired it with my GPS module and fired up TomTom to see where we were flying and how fast we were going.

Interesting: Seven Always On - Beta

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007

Wow! what a difference one year can make.

Last time I used Seven Always On was in the shape of Cingular Xpress Mail (Seven powers Cingular's AT&T's Xpress Mail service) on my Nokia E62.

I was *not* impressed with the service.

Well, the boys and girls over at Seven have been working hard. I was mightily impressed with Seven's beta of their upcoming new version. I recommend giving their new version a try - the beta is open to the public.

I’m Baaaack~!

Monday, July 23rd, 2007

Sorry for the lack updates. The past few weeks have been very, very busy. Work is as usual very busy but on top of that my wife and I bought our first home together - Yay! we now own a piece of America, or at least the bank does…

Another reason for my silence is that for the past month I have had the opportunity to try out a few other devices.

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

Two interesting video clips of Nokia E61i in the air has appeared.

The first one shows someone using TomTom with a Nokia E61i inside a plane - the GPS mapping software shows a speed of 862 km/h! Quite impressive.

The other video is by Adam Curry who used his Nokia E61i to capture a video clip while flying himself from the UK down to Cannes. It is part of Adam Curry Daily Source Code

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

There is always a time gap between when new devices are announced and 3rd party accessories become available. As is evident with the Nokia E61i as new cases are available.

The first Crystal cases for Nokia E61i have been spotted. xtemujin picked one up from a vendor in Singapore for $8.

Nokia E61(i) Car Mount

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

I received the following email from Robin:

About a week ago I decided that my new E61i could use a mount of some sort to use for GPS and for easier access to my phone while I was driving. I searched a lot of places and ended up on eBay, naturally. I stumbled upon a nice little mount that seemed to do exactly what I was looking for. A week later, I installed it in my car and I was ready to go.

I did it!

After holding out for almost a month, while reading all the positive comments on these post, I caved in and bought the Nokia E61i.

Am I ever glad I took the leap!

I've had the device for less than a day so while it's too early to post any first impressions, instead I will share a list of the first five applications I installed on my brand new device and why I choose to install them.
