For all of you out there relying on Mail For Exchange for your push email access to Microsoft Exchange it's time to upgrade. Nokia has released Mail For Exchange version 1.5. The new client contains a number of bug fixes and new features and will work with any Eseries device with a firmware of 1.610.04.02 or later.

New features in this release include:

• Configurable heartbeat interval

• Detailed admin logging

• Notification improvements for “new emails”

• Ability to set importance flag for sent messages

• Improved handling for IT Policy updates

• Support for “Send As” capability

• Support for Microsoft Exchange 2007

• Support for Microsoft Small Business Server

• Support for F-Secure

• Support for Symantec

I haven't confirmed this yet but I have heard that This version no longer can be run on the Nseries devices. (As opposed to the previous versions of Mail For Exchange that worked on Nseries) The new client is available for download here:

Nokia E61 Shortcuts

Monday, February 5th, 2007

I am amazed that I still stumble across and discover shortcuts for the Nokia E61 (and other Eseries/S60 3rd edition devices) that I didn't know existed.

The other day I discovered that holding down the "End Key" will bring up a screen asking whether you want to close the active data connection or not. It might not be the most commonly used feature but nevertheless I think it is cool that the shortcut exist. (more…)

Windows Live Messenger

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

Windows Live Messenger, which we wrote about here, has found a new home. The previously available client from Microsoft China stopped working, or at least is no longer free.

However, the same Windows Live Client client is available as a download from, among other sites, Nokia Hong Kong. The client is free (for now) and works great on my English language Nokia E61. (more…)

Radio On Your Nokia E61 - DI.FM

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

If you use your Eseries device to listen to radio your are going to like this. If you don’t already use your device for this purpose I suggest that you try it out.

Radio and the Nokia E61 has been covered quite extensively before. If you are a beginner there are some basic posts you might want to go through. (Start with this then perhaps this post go on to any of these posts. I would also recommend that you scan through the comments of these posts. There are some GREAT tips and answers to many questions that a newbie or even an advanced user will run into).

Anyway, Becket was kind enough to send me a playlist of “Digitally Imported” radio (Di.fm). “Digitally Imported” is is a multi-channel Internet radio service specializing in Electronic Dance Music genres. (more…)

Red Nokia E61

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

Let’s face it - colour sells and I’m glad that Nokia is finally picking up on that. In the meanwhile you can do something about it yourself and “visually enhance” your Eseries device just like Isaac did.

He bought red face plates for his Nokia E61 from the eBay seller Facestation.

Travel

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

It’s been, and still is, a busy time. I’ve been on the road for a few days (oh the glory of business travel) and have another week to go.

Meanwhile, the backlog of email is growing. I apologise for the delay in getting back to your feedback, questions and comments. As always, it is much appreciated but it will take me a while to reply. There might also be fewer updates than usual the next coming week.

Localized Products

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

I normally buy my handsets unlocked in the generic “vanilla” version to avoid any carrier limitations.

In my opinion, it gives me more freedom with my device. For an example, it seems as if firmware upgrades for the generic Eseries devices are available before they are released for the carrier branded devices. I also avoid any carrier specified home pages in the web browser and icons on the device representing services that the carrier will try to push down my throat.

Lately, though I have been thinking of the things I miss out on by not buying a carrier branded device - localization! (more…)

Nokia E61 Mod

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

It's been a while since I posted photos of some sweet Nokia E61 mods. However, I plan to make up for the lack of mod pictures over the next two weeks starting off with two pictures from flexte.

This beautiful Nokia E61 was painted by a professional who usually paints motorcycles.

Thanks flexte. More Nokia E61 mods here.

Apple & Their Lawyers

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

A few weeks back I wrote about S60Themes. A site dedicated to creating great themes for S60. Many of the initial themes were based on the UI of Mac OSX.

It’s seems as Apple’s lawyers have been busy since SJ announced the iPhone.

Apple’s lawyers have been sending out cease and decease letters to a number of theme designers, developers and bloggers who according to Apple have been encroaching on their territory. Anything remotely linked to Apple+Phone has been a target of these hard working lawyers.

Absolutely, Positively Must Have Accessories For Nokia E61

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

I have a short list of accessories for Nokia E61 that have improved the overall user experience and helped me get more out of my device. These are three add-ons that you have to pry from my hands. First on my list (in my particular order) is the retractable sync and charger cable from Boxwave. I can’t stop raving about this little bad boy.

Fake! - Counterfeit Bluetooth Accessories

Monday, January 15th, 2007

We are all aware of the problems with counterfeit designer brand clothes, hand bags and shoes. However, this is also a big problem for the handset industry. Especially when it comes to cellphone batteries and bluetooth accessories.

I received an email from Shaffin with a harrowing story about a simple purchase of a bluetooth headset fraught with problems. Luckily, a great an assistant manager at the Nokia NY flagship store could elevate some of the problems. Read and learn:

My iphone is already here: it’s the e61. As I’ve noted on a previous post on the e-series blog, I don’t think this device, rightly lauded everywhere else, gets enough praise in the U.S. But it needs a companion. In December, I started to look for a bluetooth headset. I narrowed my search to Nokia BH-800 and BH-900. And there begins my run-in with an aftermarket product - and what kind of support I received from the marketplace.

Mobile VPN on The Eseries

Sunday, January 7th, 2007

“Mobile VPN on the Eseries” or “Everything you ever wanted to know about VPN on the Nokia E61″

I have to confess that (mobile) VPN isn’t remotely my area of expertise. However, I’ve gotten a few questions about VPN and thought I should share a great “How To” about VPN on the Nokia E61. (more…)

A Better Contact Application - Search/Sort By Contact

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

I receive a fair amount of questions with regards to all Eseries devices. The second most commonly asked question is “How do I sort or search my contacts by company name?” Since the built in address book doesn’t let me do that I have invested in a great contact application from Alon Software. Their Alon Contact Guide For S60 3rd Edition is a Godsend!
