Bluetooth Keyboard For Nokia E61

Monday, October 30th, 2006

Before you get rid of your old, foldable Bluetooth Keyboard and upgrade to the Nokia Wireless Keyboard SU-8W you should give it a second try. Chances are that your old Bluetooth keyboard will work with your just fine with your Nokia E61.

The Nokia Wireless Keyboard application for the SU-8W works with other Bluetooth keyboards as well. The below ThinkOutside keyboard, branded as Dell, works great with the Nokia E61.

Just download and install the Wireless Keyboard Application from Nokia. In use it is blissfully simple. Open the keyboard and type!

Thanks Neil!

Transparent Nokia E61 Case

Saturday, October 28th, 2006

A good and cheap alternative for fancy leather Nokia E61 cases are the many different crystal clear hard plastic covers available on eBay. They are cheap and surprisingly rugged. However, should they get scratched they are cheap enough to replace.

Thanks for the great pictures above Marco!

Tu sent me this picture of his black Nokia E61 in a clear plastic case. More Nokia E61 mods here.

Thanks Tu!

Something for the Apple and Nokia E61 lover. 11 Mac Pros, 44 terabytes and one Nokia E61.

Question: So what is this set-up (sans the Nokia E61) used for?

Thanks Aaron!

Nokia E62 Ads

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

The Nokia E62 is being advertised broadly in the US press and it seems to be paying off. Recently, I have seen more and more people in San Francisco using the Nokia E62. Also, my local Cingular store reported that the Nokia E62 was selling quickly.

I hope this translates into many more applications and services optimized for the Nokia E61/E62.

Midnight Blue Nokia E61

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

After documenting the transformation of other people's Nokia E61 for some time, the turn has finally come to me. I bit the bullet and ordered a blue case from the now famous eBay seller.

I have to say that I was a bit nervous before I started ripping my precious Nokia E61 apart. However, just as many others have reported before me - it was really a straightforward procedure. No problems at all. Having said that, please be aware that you will void your warranty by performing this surgery on your precious Nokia E61.

I followed Andres' detailed instructions. The trickiest part was to remove the top, back cover with the Nokia logo. But even that wasn't a problem. I just used an ordinary knife.

Putting the new case back together was easy. However, the battery latch that I received fits very tightly and as many other's have mentioned before the front, top portion feels a bit loose. I also have to say that switching to the plastic case makes the device feels less solid.

Windows Live Messenger For Nokia E61

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

Windows Live Messenger is available as a download from Microsoft China. The Nokia E61 isn't listed as one of the supported devices but it works great with the Nokia E61.

You can download the client from MSN China. Click on "Messenger"

Then click on the buttom next to the blue arrow.

Choose Nokia E60 and enter your cell phone number, the verification code and click on the right buttom with the letters "PC" (download to PC)

Then you just install the application and voila - Windows Live Messenger for Nokia E61.

I know that there is a version of this application floating around on some sites but I thought I should point out where you can get the original file.

Thanks to Kimi and Marc, among others.

Head over to FierceWireless and vote for some of your favourite blogs in the Fierce Favorites contest which runs until October 31st.

The above picture has absolutely nothing to do with this blog post. But I like it. I took it in the bar at Hotel Costes.

Nokia E61 - Roaming Around The World

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

After 16 days, 7 countries and countless of miles travelled I am finally back home! My preparation for the trip paid off - I had plenty of battery power throughout the trip. However, I wish I would have listened to the comments of the original posting and loaded up on WorldMate! As much as I like the application I just can't believe I forgot to install it. It would have been an indispensable tool on the trip.

I was pleasantly surprised to see how easy it was to roam from country to country and network to network and still get very good reception and uninterrupted data service. I got great coverage and speed in locations I would not have expected to - Vietnam for an example.

My biggest surprise was that the Nokia E61 worked excellent in Japan - something I didn't know.

Of course, all this roaming comes with a very steep price - Cingular charges $4.99 per minute while in Vietnam. Needless to say I kept the usage to a minimum!

Black Nokia E61 Revisited

Saturday, October 21st, 2006

Sabesh sent me some pictures of his black Nokia E61.

The casing is the black casing from eBay and the keyboard is the OEM keyboard with black softkeys from CNN. I have to say that the the black keyboard makes the device even better looking!

Thanks Sabesh!

Friday Themes

Friday, October 20th, 2006

Updated with a new theme from Beemer.

It's that time of the week again - it's Friday and time for some good Nokia E61 Themes.

First up is Varely who created a variant of "Kooky Phone" called "Unexpected". This theme is available in two version - Kooky Phone light (with standard icons) and Kooky Phone standard (with optimized icons)

Unexpected by Valery

Beemer, over at e61 My Mobile has created a nice Skype inspired theme… could this mean that a Skype client is not far away ;-)

Another new theme is Tribal created by Daniel at e61life.

Two very simplistic and stylish White themes have gotten a makeover. igBase is out in a new version and so is also "White" by Daniel.

Also Green Dots by Feras has been updated.

Nokia Team Suite - Nokia E50

Thursday, October 19th, 2006

Nokia Team Suite is in my opinion the best new application or feature with the Nokia E50. It should be included on all E-Series devices! It is a shame that such a good application is only available on the Nokia E50.

Team Suite, is a new group collaboration software that is very useful. Team Suite helps organize and facilitate conference calls, initiate push-to-talk sessions with selected team members through a built-in speakerphone.

For a project manager, team lead or anyone who organizes work or even friends and families around "groups" or "teams" this is a godsend.

You can easily create different groups, and as easily populate the groups with members from your address book.

Team Suite will then let you choose one, several or all members of your group to interact with them by conference calls, push-to-talk sessions, sending email or other text messages.

Team Suite, coupled with the fact that the Nokia E50 supports virtually all major mobile enterprise email applications (BlackBerry Connect, Mail For Exchange etc.) makes it an ideal device to use as a "business" phone.

A First Look Inside the Nokia E50

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

As most of us are, I am a creature of habit. Over the past month I have gotten used to the big nice screen of the Nokia E61. Switching to the Nokia E50 means giving up some of that screen size for a smaller and handier device - a trade off I am willing to make on a Sturday or Sunday.

However, it does take some time to get adjusted to the new dimensions.

The Nokia E50 comes with some features and applications I wish was present in the Nokia E61. One of those features is the predictive text input method. Of course, it is more or less an imperative to have predictive text input on a non QWERTY device but I still think it would have been great to have it on the Nokia E61. Anyway - I'm glad that it is a part of the Nokia E50.

Another neat feature is the Text To Speech function which is used by the Message Reader application. Yay, no more reading your messages - let the device read them for you ;-)

A great enhancement is the Notification Light. The notification light of the Nokia E50 is the area around the joystick. Instead of only using the notification light as a new mail notifier as on the Nokia E61, the Nokia E50 has the capability to use it to notify the user of a number of events.

More tomorrow about my favourite new application bundled on the Nokia E50 - Team Suite.

A Blog With a Theme

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

I normally try to keep my Nokia E61 Theme related posts to Fridays. However, since I am currently on vacation it feel's like a Friday - i'm off tomorrow ;-)

I'm glad to see that I am not the only Nokia E61 related blog with its own Nokia E61 theme. Beemer's "e61 - my mobile" is a new Nokia E61 blog with lots of promise. The blog also has its own theme, based on one of the color themes in Profimail.

Profi Theme by Beemer

Thanks Beemer. Keep up the good work with the blog and the theme creation.

As usual, there are more themes on the Nokia E61 themes page. If you try to install the themes but get an "Certificate Error" messsage read this

Weekend Phones - Some More Nokia E50 Pr0n

Monday, October 16th, 2006

For good and bad, email is a huge part of my life. Whether I like it or not I can't be away from it.

I normally don't need to reply to email on the weekends but I do need to stay connected and be able to view any email coming in. That is why the idea of an email enabled weekend phone is so appealing to me.

On Monday - Friday I need a QWERTY device so that I can *read and reply* to email. However, on Saturday and Sunday size is a priority and as long as I can *read* email I am fine. I can give up the QWERTY keyboard but not give up the email functionality.

When I say "email" I should clarify that I mean work email - in other words not POP3 based email (for me at least). So I need to be able to use BlackBerry Connect, Mail For Exchange or any other "corporate" email solutions.

Because I can run a program which provides access to and automatically synchronises my corporate email, calendar and contacts between the Nokia E61 and the Nokia E50 I never have to worry about setting up the devices. They are always in sync. Contacts, calendars and email are in harmony on both the devices.

The biggest hassle now of having two devices and one SIM is to have to move it back and forth between the E50 and the E61 ;-) I know, I'm lazy…

Weekend phones - What are your thoughts?

The Family Is Growing - Nokia E50

Sunday, October 15th, 2006

In my search for the perfect weekend phone I decided to get a Nokia E50 from the dependable boys over at Mobile Planet. I've actually had the Nokia E50 for over a month now and primarily used it as my weekend phone.

I have to say that I really, really like this device! I will not give up my Nokia E61 (nor the Nokia E62 for that matter ;-) ) since I am hooked on email and rely on the QWERTY keyboard. However, as a "weekend phone" or a back-up, this device is amazing. It is small and light but the screen is huge. There is something about it that makes it very nice to hold. It's hard to explain it - you have to feel it. The device fits so well in your hands (and in the pocket) but the sensation you get when you hold the Nokia E50 is hard to explain…

I think Elisha on HowardForums came close when she wrote - "its awesome man…..i love it alot. can't keep my hands off it. feels like holding a gold nugget!"

Here are the ritual unboxing photos. More about the Nokia E50, a peek inside and some unique applications for the E50 over the next few days.

Some Tech Specs:

  • Quad Band GSM 850/900/1800/1900
  • Weight: 104g
  • Dimensions: 113 mm x 43.5 mm x 15.5 mm
  • 70 MB internal dynamic memory
  • 240 x 320 pixels
  • S60 platform, 3rd edition
  • Supports: BlackBerry Connect, Visto Mobile, Activesync Mail for Exchange, Intellisync Wireless Email and Altexia

Two Tone Nokia E61

Saturday, October 14th, 2006

I can't get enough of Nokia E61 mods! I haven't gotten around to try it myself yet so I take great pleasure in looking at what other Nokia E61 owners have created.

Machani from British Columbia sent me an email with these pictures of a nice two tone Nokia E61. Machani writes:

I was particularly interested in modding my E61, without using paint. So I ordered a blue E61 housing kit from eBay (seller in Singapore). The housing I received was much darker in colour than the one pictured in eBay. In fact the blue housing is deep indigo blue.

I followed the excellent instructions here and was able to install the new housing without a problem. I did make a change, however, to the standard housing mod. Since I wanted to keep the original Nokia logo in the front and back, I used the original silver-grey front and back top covers with the new blue front and back housing.

Note: the front top cover with the Nokia logo can be separated from the front face plate by gently prying it open. There is a backing double sided tape thatholds the front top cover in place, but it can be separated quite easily.

When attaching the ORIGINAL front top cover to the NEW front housing, I recommend using some double-sided tape to keep the front top cover firmly in place on the front housing.

Thanks for sharing Machani!

Nokia E61/E62 Themes

Thursday, October 12th, 2006

It's time for some themes for the Nokia E62 again. D3 keeps on delivering. This week D3 has put together one theme based on last week's wallpaper, one theme promoting the beauty of his native Croatia and one theme called Rose.

"Rose" and "Cat" are available for download as one package and Croatia as a separate package.

Thank you D3!

As usual, there are more themes on the Nokia E61 themes page. If you try to install the themes but get an "Certificate Error" messsage read this.

Nokia E61 In Italy

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

Pierluigi from Italy sent me this photo taken backstage at a fashion show. It confirms what I always have suspected - Italian Models have great taste in smartphones ;-)

Thanks Pierluigi!
