Nokia E62 For $49, eh I mean $99

Thursday, November 9th, 2006

A few days ago I noticed that the price for the Nokia E62 on Cingular had come down to an amazingly low $49! for online activated accounts. I was writing a positive post about Cingular when I decided to make sure that the price was actually $49. To my surprise I noticed that Cingular had removed the $50 online activation rebate so the effective price is $99.

$99 is still a *great* price for the Nokia E62 and $50 cheaper than what I paid for my device :-(  I hope some of you had the time to snag the Nokia E62 for a mere $49! I don't know exactly how long that price was effective but it lasted at least a week.

Make your Nokia E61 Sound Like a Nokia 8800

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

A phone I find extremely beautiful is the Nokia 8800. I had the great opportunity to try out a friend’s Nokia 8800 for a short while. Oh boy, was it ever hard to give it back to my friend… Every single part of the device is of premium quality. Everything from the state of the art sliding mechanism (the same amazing feeling you get from opening and closing a Mercedes-Benz door), the scratch resistant screen to the exquisite sounds of the Nokia 8800. This device is pure elegance and brilliant luxury.

However, as you all know I’m an E-series kind of guy. While the look of the Nokia 8800 is out of reach for me I can at least make my E-Series devices sound like a Nokia 8800. (more…)

Nokia E50 Revisited

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

Although I have written about the Nokia E50 before I feel that it wasn’t a “review” of the device. Like so many of my posts it was more a photo exposé than anything else. To make things right I asked Asri from the excellent site i-symbian to write a more in depth review of the Nokia E50. Here’s Asri’s report:

Nokia E50 is the youngest in the Eseries family, targeted to business users. It was announced in May 2006. With a very sleek design in a compact form-factor, E50 delivers superb performance. (more…)

Nokia E61 Best New Converged Device: Beats Motorola Q & SE P990i

Monday, November 6th, 2006

The Nokia E61 generated some great press coverage in the month of October. Strategy Analytics rated the Nokia E61 the best new Converged Device. The Nokia E61 achieved higher user ratings for both style/design as well as usability.

Strategy Analytics reports that the Motorola Q was a disappointment because of the poor build quality and durability. Something my Moto Q carrying friends and sources at Verizon have confirmed. The Q also rated the lowest score for physical input and joint lowest score for applications and menu organization (no surprise here given the OS of the Q ;-)

The Nokia E61 also received five stars in a review in T3 and was described as “strong like an ox and sneaky like a fox…an unstoppable powerhouse” by Stuff Magazine.

GoTalkMobile - Google Talk Client

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

Hot on the heels of the post about the Google Gmail application for Nokia E61 here is a quick look at a J2ME client for Google Talk from a company called GoTalkMobile. To make things abundantly clear - this is an application from a third party and not from Google.

Nokia E61 is not listed as one of the supported devices but the E70 is. I downloaded the version for the Nokia E70 and it worked fine on my Nokia E61. The application can be downloaded directly from the web to your Nokia E61 using the “Services” wap browser. Just access http://wap.gotalkmobile.com but remember to use the “Services” browser. You can also install the application via your PC. Just download the Jar or Jad file and install it on your device. (more…)

Apple Wireless Keyboard + Nokia E61 = True

Sunday, November 5th, 2006

As an update to the previous post about various wireless Bluetooth keyboards working with the Nokia E61 I can now report that Apple’s wireless keyboard works great with the E-Series devices.

Shaun was kind enough to send me this photo and video clip of his Nokia E60 and Apple’s wireless keyboard working together in perfect harmony. (more…)

Website Updates

Saturday, November 4th, 2006

As some you noticed and kindly pointed out to me, performance of the blog was less than ideal this week. I apologise for the inconvenience.

I thought all was honky dory when I received an alarming email from my hosting company telling me that the e-series blog was being flooded with access attempts. The blog was receiving up to 5,000 access attempts in one hour. (more…)

Having problems installing the themes or getting the "Certificate Error" message? then read this. Do you have any themes you would like to share with the rest of us - drop me a line.

Gmail Application for Nokia E61

Thursday, November 2nd, 2006

Update: If you have problems accessing the download site using your browser, use the "Services" browser (the wap browser) located in the "Media" folder.

Google today announced a java application that runs on the Nokia E61 (and the rest of the E-series devices) that delivers the look and feel of Gmail.

Just go to gmail.com/app with your browser and download the application. If you don't have a Gmail account you can sign up for an account from gmail.google.com. An activation code will be delivered via SMS.

According to Google the application provides up to five times faster access and use of Gmail thanks to automatic pre-fetching of messages. I'm not sure it is five times faster but it feels rathar snappy. The application is also optimized to reduce the number of clicks of keystrokes used to scroll, compose, search and read email.

I have to admit that Google has done it again
