Problems With Themes: Certificate Error, Certificate Expired

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

As much as I like themes to personalize my Nokia Eseries devices they are also a cause for the vast majority of all questions I receive to this blog. On a good day I get no questions about themes but on an average I get five questions a day. Yes, five questions per day! The questions I receive are:

"I have problems installing themes please help me" or "I get a "certificate error" message when trying to install a theme what do I do" or "I get an "certificate expired" error message when installing a theme please help"

Although this have been covered extensively in the past I guess it is still an issue.

If you try to install a theme and see the above error message "Certificate Error. Contact the application supplier" You are trying to installed an application that is not Symbian signed.

The solution is easy. Simply switch the setting in the Application Manager from "Signed only" to accept all - "Software Installation: All". You can find the application manager in the tools folder, then click on "Option" to bring up "Settings"

Another common issue is the "Expired Certificate" error. The certificate that the theme developer used may have expired. However, there is an even easier fix for this issue.

Simply set the date on your device back one year and then install the theme. After you successfully installed the theme don't forget to set the time correctly on your device.

With that being said I am now off to trawl the internet for some new great themes. If you have any themes to share with us please send them my way: Ed at "the domain of this blog".

Nokia E61i - Wired Editor’s Pick

Monday, October 29th, 2007

Nokia E61i won the Wired's Editor's Pick award in their smartphones category of their Wired Test Winter 2008 issue.

The Nokia E61i beat out  a number of formidable competitors including Palm Treo 755P, BlackBerry 8830, Motorola Q9 etc.

Wired liked the amazing web browser, the great collection of business and media applications, and the long talk time.

Listed as what they did not like was the width of the device, the placement of the microSD slot and the lack of stereo Bluetooth.

New Firmware For Nokia E65

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

As Tom and several other readers pointed out, there is a new firmware available for Nokia E65. Download the Nokia Software Update application, connect yor Nokia E65 and upgrade your device to firmware 2.0633.65.01.

There is still no information about the software update on the news section so I am not sure what is included in the upgrade. If anyone has a change log please post it in the comment section.

Faster, Faster, Faster

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

I did it again. But this time faster. My previous post about using TomTom with a GPS receiver on my Nokia E61 while flying generated a lot of good comments.

I also received  a challenge from Maciek of Symbiosis S60 Blog who used his Nokia N95 to clock in a higher speed than my original 777km/h. Maciek recorded a speed of 874km/h per his post. Another reader - Jay, recorded a speed of 846 km/h

OK Maciek, beat this 1006 km/h

Windows Live Messenger For Nokia Eseries

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

Windows Live Messenger has quietly showed up in the Download Folder on Eseries devices in certain regions and with certain carriers.

The Windows Live Messenger client was initially released for a number of Nokia's NSeries devices. However, the client which supports Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Hotmail, Windows Live Spaces and Live Search is now officially available for Eseries.

However, once again, it should be noted that distribution seemed to be tied to certain carriers (read SIM) and certain regions.

Not Black - Titanium Nokia E61i

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

A reader was kind enough to point out one subtle difference - the black Nokia E61i is not black but available in certain markets as "Nokia E61i Limited Titanium Color Edition"

So it's not black - it's Titanium. In either case, I like it a lot.

Thanks for the pictures Francis.

By popular demand, here are some more photos of the Black Nokia E61i.

I so much want one! A question to you readers, has anyone seen the Black Nokia E61i available online? I have gotten word that it is available in certain Asian countries but I haven't found it available online yet.

Nokia E61i in Multiple Colours

Monday, October 15th, 2007

Personally, I wouldn't mind to see Nokia E61i in each colour of the rainbow but I know that's too much for some of you. Let's not go that far but instead show four great colours of the Nokia E61i in one picture - a first probably.

The black Nokia E61i has recently shown up for sale in Asia.

Pre-Ordered: Nokia E51

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

First thing first - a big apology to all readers for the lack of updates to the blog. I've been completely swamped with work, the house and life in general.

Anyway, i did it! I placed a pre-order for the Nokia E51. It's not that I need a new device, but there were a few features that made me pull the trigger.

The delivery date is (hopefully) soon (read December).

The features, in no particular order, that won me over and made me take out that credit card are:

  • The new icons. They are clear and simple, easy to understand and logical. I am happy that the application key, aka the "Yin-Yang key" is replaced with a "home" key. Finally.
  • Size, design and battery life. Although I normally go for a device with a full qwerty keyboard I still need something smaller, sleeker, thinner but yet equally powerful from a feature/application standpoint, for the weekend. The battery life is impressive 1050 mAh which translates to about 13 days of standby time and 4.4 hours of talk time.

  • One Touch Mute Button. The mute key, which as introduced on the Nokia E65 has gotten a better placement on the side.
  • Scalable Fonts, so that you can finally adjust the font size for various applications, which is part of the new version of Symbian S60 3.1
